“Are you sure you want this…with me?” Will asked, knowing others would be forever changed. “I’ve never been more sure of anything. I want you,” Sarah answered. Later, at King’s Creek, a mother bear and cub cornered Sarah in the water until Will’s slingshot stones struck true. “Get down, Sarah!” he shouted. Afterward he carved the West African symbol into the stump and declared, “Me Ware Wo I shall marry you.” Sarah replied, “Me Ware Wo, Will,” and their first kiss sealed the vow. ••••••• In the rugged Colorado high country of 1939, seventeen-year-old Sarah Ellis and nineteen-year-old William “Will” Harston grow from lifelong friends into something deeper amid farm hardships, family bonds, and a deadly bear encounter that forces their hearts into the open. Their secret promise “Me Ware Wo” binds them as poverty, drought, and the shadow of coming war test every loyalty. A heartbreaking watermelon memory and the quiet strength of parents Anne and Edward Ellis ground a story of first love, quiet courage, and the cost of choosing each other. Unique for its raw mountain setting, authentic coming-of-age intensity, and a symbol of commitment carved into living wood, this tale asks: What would you risk for the one who saves you? Can a childhood vow survive the storms ahead?

CHAPTER ONE
Summer 1942 The night air settled heavy against her bare shoulders, carrying the scent of crushed grass and something else, something that belonged entirely to him. She wouldn't allow herself to think about what this meant. Not anymore. The thinking had nearly destroyed her these past months, the endless questioning of right and wrong, the circular arguments she'd had with her own conscience. Tonight, she had chosen to abandon the luxury of doubt. Tonight would be about feeling alone. His hand traced the length of her collarbone with deliberate slowness, his fingers mapping her skin as if committing each detail to permanent memory. The blanket beneath her held the warmth of the day, but it was his body heat that made her feel like she was burning from the inside out. She'd waited for this not necessarily this exact moment, but the inevitability of it. The moment when she stopped running from what she wanted and let herself simply want. "Look at me," he whispered, though she'd never looked away. His eyes held that particular intensity that had undone her weeks ago, the one that made her forget there was anyone else in existence. She could see the conflict in his expression too, the war between restraint and hunger. Good. She wanted him conflicted. She wanted him to understand that this was a conscious choice, not an accident born from stolen moments and forbidden touches. She'd imagined this scene a thousand times, but imagination paled against reality. The weight of him as he settled closer, the rough texture of his jaw against her neck, the particular way he breathed when he was trying to maintain control none of it matched the fantasies that had kept her awake during endless California nights. Those fantasies had always been tangled, confused, faces blurring together in the darkness. But as his lips found the sensitive place where her shoulder met her neck, a different face flashed across her mind. Not his. The other one. The one who existed a thousand miles away in a memory so crystallized it had taken on the weight of a ghost. She stiffened for only a moment, and she felt him notice. He pulled back slightly, searching her expression with sudden uncertainty. She couldn't let him see the truth that she'd just betrayed someone who had already been betrayed by circumstance. That she was using his body to run from the emptiness of another's silence. That somewhere in Colorado, the man she'd promised everything to had probably moved on, and here she was, finally admitting that she was doing the same. The realization should have stopped her. It almost did. Instead, she pulled him closer, her fingers pressing into the muscles of his shoulders with an intensity that bordered on desperate. She would bury the other name so deep inside herself that it could never surface again. She would transform this moment from infidelity into survival. Wasn't that what people did when faced with impossible choices they rewrote the narrative until they could live with what they'd become? "I need this," she said, and it was the truest thing she'd spoken in months. She needed to feel wanted by someone actually present. She needed proof that life could move forward, even if moving forward meant leaving behind the promises she'd made to a boy who'd become a memory. He paused for only a heartbeat more, and then the hesitation fled from his eyes entirely. His touch became possessive, claiming. And she let him. She let him rewrite her in this moment, knowing full well that no amount of physical passion could erase what she'd already lost, or the knowledge that she was choosing to lose it again. The path that had led to this night twisted back through months of separation, through letters that hadn't arrived, through the unbearable weight of distance that had slowly corroded what she'd believed was unbreakable. She'd have to examine that path eventually, trace it back to the beginning, to understand how she'd become someone capable of this betrayal. But not tonight. Tonight, she would exist only in sensation and choice, in the dangerous present where consequences hadn't yet caught up with her decisions. The stars above remained indifferent witnesses to her transformation. ######### 3 Years Earlier ~ Summer 1939 Amelie’s eyes flew open as she awoke to the sound of thunderous pounding. She gasped to catch her breath until she realized she was in her bed, in her home, and it was the sound of her own heart thudding against her chest. Slowly, the familiar sounds of her mother cooking breakfast and the muffled voices of her parents discussing the day’s events filtered into her thoughts. Amelie blinked as she forced herself to slow her breathing. She swallowed the hard lump in her throat while the memory of the nightmare flashed through her mind. These dreams had been coming to her for as long as she could remember. Always leaving her with the same pit in her stomach. As bad as it was now, it was worse as a child. Many times she would wake in a cold sweat with tears falling down the side of her face. The emotions of the dream were raw, yet the details always seemed to be just under the surface of her subconscious and out of reach. Even now as she was older, she still couldn’t shake the uneasiness that it left in her. She closed her eyes and once again focused on what was real: the smell of coffee, clanking dishes, and her brother outside just below the bedroom window yelling to his dog to fetch a stick.
