Chapter 1: The Night I Was Rejected
The night smelled like smoke, pine, and expectation. Aria Nightshade stood in the center of the clearing, surrounded by her pack, and tried to steady her breathing. Firelight danced across familiar faces some curious, some amused, most already expecting her to fail. She ignored them. Tonight was the mating ceremony. Tonight, the Moon Goddess would reveal her mate. For the first time in her life, Aria allowed herself to hope. Maybe this was how everything changed. Maybe this was how she stopped being invisible. A hush fell over the clearing. Then the air shifted heavy, commanding. Alpha Kael Draven stepped into the light. The entire pack stilled. Conversations died. Heads lowered. Aria’s heart slammed against her ribs. He was overwhelming. Tall, powerful, dressed in black, his presence alone enough to silence the entire crowd. And then It hit. A force so strong it stole the air from her lungs. Her body locked, heat rushing through her veins as something deep inside her snapped into place. Mate. Her mate… was him. A shaky breath left her lips as hope bloomed in her chest, fragile but bright. Out of everyone, it was Alpha Kael. Maybe this was fate correcting itself. She stepped forward, her voice soft. “Alpha…” His gaze swept over the crowd, bored—until it landed on her. Everything froze. For a split second, something flickered in his eyes. Recognition. Relief flooded her chest. “I’m your mate,” she said, her voice trembling but clear. Silence followed. The entire pack watched. Waited. Aria held her breath, expecting him to step forward, to accept her A low chuckle broke the moment. Her smile faltered. Kael looked at her, and there was nothing in his expression. No warmth. No interest. “I know,” he said. Dread curled in her stomach. “Then…” she started. “I, Alpha Kael Draven,” he cut in, his voice carrying across the clearing, “reject you, Aria Nightshade, as my mate.” The words shattered everything. For a second, Aria didn’t understand. Rejected? Pain exploded through her chest. She gasped, doubling over as the bond snapped, sharp and brutal, like something inside her had been ripped apart. Whispers rose around her. Then laughter. “Please…” The word slipped out, broken. “Don’t do this…” She hated herself for saying it. Kael didn’t react. “If I accept you,” he said coldly, “I weaken my pack.” Each word hit like a slap. “You have no strength. No status. No value.” Aria flinched, but forced herself to stay standing. “I can get stronger,” she said quickly. “I’ll train I can be what you need” “No.” The single word ended everything. “You are not fit to be my Luna,” he continued, already sounding bored. “I need someone worthy.” Tears blurred her vision, but she refused to cry. Not here. Not in front of them. Something inside her broke completely. The bond was gone. So was the hope. Kael turned away like she didn’t exist. “Get her out of my sight.” Two guards grabbed her arms. Aria didn’t fight. Didn’t speak. She let them drag her through the crowd as laughter and whispers followed her, cutting deeper than the rejection itself. They threw her outside the pack borders. She hit the ground hard, pain shooting through her body. “Don’t come back,” one of them muttered before leaving. Silence swallowed her. Aria lay there, staring at the full moon above her. Cold. Distant. Like everything else. Slowly, she pushed herself up. Her hands trembled as they curled into fists. A tear slipped down her cheek. Then her expression hardened. Something inside her shifted. “You will regret this,” she whispered. Not broken. Not begging. Done. Behind her, the pack moved on like she had never existed. But Aria Nightshade wasn’t gone. Not yet.
