CHAPTER ONE
"Honey! The bus is almost here! Hurry up before it leaves without you!"I heard my grandma shout from the hallway. The clatter of pots and pans followed shortly after.
It's hard getting ready in the morning within a 20 minute time span. Why? Because I woke up late.
"I'll be right there grandma!"I called back. I flung everything I needed into my backpack and put my winter boots on, giving myself a once over in my small full length mirror.
"Olivia! I can see the bus down the road. Hurry!"
I didn't need to hear that twice before I went dashing through my bedroom door. I saw grandma standing at the already open door with my coat in her hands. The slight snow falling outside made the place look darker than it should be.
I rushed to her and took the coat from her grasp, putting it on while I watch the bus make it's way to the bus stop situated outside of my house.
"Thank you grandma. I don't know what I would do without you."I said while kissing her cheek.
"It's no problem honey. Just be back before it gets too dark, okay? And be careful of the snow."she smiled at me.
"Okay. I will."then I made my way to the bus stop.
The bus had just arrived as I got there, so I stepped on and waved goodbye to my grandmother as the door closed behind me.
"Hey Olivia. Where to today?"the bus driver asked me, keeping his eyes on the road the whole time.
"Hi Oscar. Anywhere is fine."I answered him while skimming through my bag for change to pay him the bus fare.
"Oh you don't have to. You're my friend, just have a seat and I'll take you where you want to go."
"You paid for me yesterday Oscar. I have to pay you today."I tried putting the money in the little basket he kept at the front for fare, but he just sped up and that caused me to stumble back.
I huffed ignorantly and glared at him. "Fine. You can pay for me today, but tomorrow you won't get the chance."
He only chuckled, still keeping his eyes on the road. "Just take a seat Olivia."
Without arguing with him, I did as he said and took a seat at the extreme back, putting my earbuds in that was connected to my mp3 player and passed the time with the soothing sounds of music, until I decided where the perfect place to get off would be.
♧♧♧♧
"Excuse me sir. Can I interest you in any photos?"I showed the man with the Fendi coat a picture I just took and developed.
"No thank you."he walked away from me, continuing his conversation on his phone.
"But it's at a very low price!"
I don't know why I called after him. Maybe I was hoping he would turn around and buy the picture afterall.
Sighing, I picked up my bag pack, fixed my coat, and walked further down the road.
It's been 6 hours since I've been on the streets, selling not one of my photos as yet. If I didn't sell atleast one, I wouldn't be able to bring dinner home for me and grandma.
"Come on Olivia. You will not go home empty handed."I motivated myself, picking up the pace and heading further into town.
The loud roar of what sounded to be like a very fast car erupted behind me. I turned my gaze to the sound and saw a very nice red car driving in my direction. I fiddled with my camera around my neck, taking the lid off to take a quick picture.
After taking the photo, I noticed that the car sped up, driving by me and managing to drive into a puddle of water that had yet to freeze, drenching me in the filthy substance.
I stood there, shocked. The cold water seeping through my clothes, making me shiver.
The car had finally stopped some distance up ahead. Parking on the opposite side of the road.
The driver's door opened and out came a man with a cigarette prepped between his lips. He looked the epitome of perfection. His lavishing outfit of black matched his hair along with various tattoos on his right arm, revealed by the tank top he was wearing. He leaned on the side of his car, blowing the smoke up into the air.
The perfect picture.
I didn't hesitate to focus my lens on him and take the shot. Right as I did, he walked off and entered the store that was beside an alley.
Perfect timing.
I wasted no time in getting out my equipment and developing the photo. 5 minutes later, the beautiful contrast and graphic stared back at me.
"Perfect."
I held it up to the light to get a better view of it, feeling proud of myself for capturing that photographic moment.
"Uhm excuse me. Is that for sale?"
I looked behind me to see a girl, probably in her teens, staring at the picture in my hand.
"Uh, yeah."
"I'll give you $50 for it."
What?!
My eyes widened at her reasoning price.
"That's too much. I'll sell it to you for $5."
"Girl, a photo with a fine piece of specimen like that in it is worth alot of money. I'm lucky if you'll even give it to me for the $50 I'm offering."she started going into her very expensive purse, taking out a wad of cash before shoving it into my hands. "So here."
Looking at the money in my palms, I reluctantly handed her the photo. The grin that spread across her face after caused her to look psychotic. She left prancing down the road, disappearing shortly after.
I looked at the cash in my hands again, only looking away when I heard the sound of a car unlocking.
The same man had just exited the store, empty handed. I stared at his figure, watching as he walked up to his car and placed his hand on the door.
I watched his every movement. To the way his eyebrows knit together when he spotted a spot on his car, or the way his biceps flexed when he reached for the handle. I was so mesmerized that I didn't get to look away in time. Instead, something happened that caused my anxiety to rise.
Our eyes met. Dark brown was the color of his.
My eyes widened as a smirk formed on his lips. Mischief twinkled in his eyes, but when I couldn't make eye contact anymore, I looked away.
I quickly packed up my stuff and headed to the bus stop, having more than enough money to buy me and grandma dinner. I took fast and large steps, trying to escape this feeling before I got an anxiety attack.
But just like always, I did something stupid.
I looked back.
But he was gone.
"And like the wind, he disappeared."I whispered to myself before the last bus of the day stopped infront of me.
♧♧♧♧
"Grandma! I'm home! And I brought dinner!"I called into the house, balancing the McDonald's bag and the two drinks.
"I'm in the living room honey!"she called back.
I took off my coat and went there, careful not to kick over any of the buckets that was set to catch the water that kept leaking from the roof.
"I brought McDonald's."I held up the bag to show her as I saw her sitting in her armchair.
"Oh goodie. I'm starved."
I only chuckled, walking over to her and placing the food on her lap.
We made small conversation while we ate, she occasionally asking me about my day.
"So he just smirked at you?"she laughed as if it were funny.
"He did! I almost had an anxiety attack!"
"Oh Olivia, there's so much you need to discover."she smiled. I smiled too in response.
When we were both done, she was the first to get up and dispose of our garbage.
"I think I'm going to go to bed darling. I've been working in the garden all day. Goodnight."
She rounded the corner and headed to her room, leaving me in the living room to lock up.
After I've done that and emptied the buckets and put them back exactly where they're supposed to be, I retired to my room.
I emptied my backpack and took out my portable photo developer and placed it on my dresser. I then took out my camera and skimmed through it, stopping on the photo of the man I took today.
I stared at it until I ended up developing it again. I got a black sharpie and wrote the words 'Mystery Guy' on it, pasting it on my wall.
I crawled into bed under the covers, still staring at the photo.
I don't know when, but I fell asleep, remembering that that was the last image I saw before sleep overcame me.
