Monster at the door

1290 Words
Rose The rain pours heavily tonight. The first flash lights up the sky before the sound that shakes the house follows. My son screams, and I hear his footsteps leading to our door. The door swings open at the point my husband places his lips on mine. We haven’t made love in months, and this is the night we agreed to make some. “Mummy!” Joey’s voice tears through the sound of the heavy pouring rain. His voice jogs up my memories. I have lived this night before, and the very events of this night are slowly crushing down on my mind. I can only relive this night if I have been reborn, brought back to the very night my chaos began. “It’s just the rain, Joey,” my mate, Alpha Benson, grumbles with a little irritation in his voice. “You are going to be an alpha one day. You don’t have to fear such small things like thunder.” The very words he uttered before are the words he is uttering now, and tonight I know we will have a visitor, a visitor I have to be ready for. “But Daddy, there is a monster with red hair outside my window!” Joey wails out with tears in his eyes as he stands by the door. Benson looks even more irritated than before as he gets out of bed. Joey is four years old, of which I understand his fear given his young age, but the same can’t be understood by his father, the alpha of the Grandmoon pack, the second-largest pack in the world. I get out of bed too, covering my nightgown with a pale pink dressing gown. Everything is happening exactly how I remembered it to happen on this night. “What monster? You know we are the most feared pack in the world. Who would dare step foot in this pack, Joey?” His father scolds him while I quietly walk closer. “But Daddy!” Joey screams, and I know I have to step in like I did before. “Honey, why don’t we believe Joey and go check it out?” I say, prompting him like I did before. My mate grumbles under his breath that Joey is making things up. It might be thunder and lightning, but I know better. I know there is someone out there. My mate Benson grabs a T-shirt and puts it on. We all go to the front door, and the shadow of someone standing there is visible. The red reflects the brightest, and it’s hard to miss someone with such a hair colour. Benson, being the alpha he is, opens the door and growls. I put Joey behind me and stand beside my mate as I look out the door. There she stands, drenched in the rain, her red mop of hair matted to her face and her clothes torn to the point that they barely cover her body. She looks so thin that bones are sticking out of her body, which is extreme for any wolf. She looks like the monster she truly is, and this time around I will treat her as such. She lays her eyes on me, and they immediately begin to pour. She is a great actor, she has fooled me with her tears before. The memories flooding my mind makes this scene feel like it happened yesterday. Her emerald eyes look warm, quite deceiving to the eyes I saw right before my life ended. I must admit that despite everything, her face still looks stunning. That’s something no one can take away from her. “Rose, please help me.” My body tenses and Benson growls pulling me behind him, “That’s Luna to you.” He growls at my sister and she flinches taking a step back. She nods and looks eagerly at me. “Luna Rose, please help me. I have nowhere to go or stay. We are sisters, please! You have to help me. You can’t abandon your only sister.” I nearly laugh like it’s some sick joke. Her entitlement is slipping through her skin, and it’s sickening in a cold way. I can’t help but scowl at her words. Her mother and her made me suffer under their care and she claims to be my sister today. In the past, I felt pity when I saw tears in her eyes, and I quickly sympathized with her. “The last time I checked, we are stepsisters, Jolene,” I answer, my voice coming out more chipped than I intended it to. “But we lived together for years. Don’t forget that it’s my mother who took care of you after your father passed away.” She just sounds ridiculous to me. I don’t owe her anything except revenge. “Of course, I can’t forget that.” No, because I remember most of the things they made me go through, and it’s my turn to serve her something good. Any sane person who is living the same life for the second time would have turned her away at this very point, but I am not the sane person I was in my previous life, because that only got me killed. Benson pulls me to the side and looks at me with dead-set eyes. His honey brown eyes speak way before he does. “You can’t be thinking of allowing this woman into our home.” He sounds concerned, and I can’t blame him. “She is my stepsister after all. I can’t abandon her. She looks like she has gone through a lot,” I say, mirroring the words I uttered before, only I can’t mirror the emotions. Joey looks at me with worried eyes. “But Mummy, she is a monster,” he says in his pouty voice, and I almost laugh. “Don’t say that about your aunt. She is just going through a tough time in her life,” I say, and he sighs before moving closer to his father. My mate sighs. “If that’s the case, she can live with the servants,” he says, and I nod. Benson’s eyes get cloudy, and I turn to Jolene. “We will allow you to stay until you get better, but after that you have to leave.” It’s the same words I said to her in my past life, only after she got better she never left. Each day she gave me an excuse until my mate and child began to vouch for her. One of the omega servants shows up, and she is guided to their quarters where they will take care of her. The scent she leaves behind when she passes by is horrible. We all leave the front door and head back to bed. Joey is carefully tucked in by his father while I try to find some sleep. In the night, I can’t stop thinking about the second chance that the moon goddess has given me. I have to seize this moment, and I have to get my revenge on each and every one who made me suffer. I am not the same weak girl Jolene walked all over before. And my first step to deal with her is to be ahead of her schemes until she is the one who loses her life in this one. A snore disturbs the cold night, and I turn to look at my mate, Benson. I hope to save Joey and him from Jolene’s claws, it pains me that I couldn’t do so before. The only thing I refuse to try and please anyone. I am done putting others before me because that compassion only got me killed.
