Observing

Rose A few days have passed since my stepsister showed up at our doorstep, and now she is well enough to come out and join in a few pack activities. For wolves, it doesn’t take long for one to heal and get back on their feet. All she needs to do now is gain the weight she lost. Jolene joins me on my way to escort Joey to school. Everything is happening just as it did in my previous life. “What is his name?” Jolene asks. Her emerald eyes shimmer with interest, and Joey only glances at her before he holds my hand tightly. He is still convinced she is a monster. If anything, he fears her more now than he did when she first showed up at our doorstep. “His name is Joey,” I answer her coldly. “That’s nice. I hope to bond with him. Maybe I can be the one to take him to school instead,” she suggests, and I shake my head. “I don’t want you to be bothered with Joey. If you are looking for something to do, there is plenty to be done in the pack,” I answer her, not caring if my voice sounds a bit rude, but in this life, I won’t let her get close to my son like I did in my previous one. In my previous life, she first got close to Joey, suggested taking him to school hoping to bond. Joey refused, but I insisted and even coaxed him to get along with his aunt, not knowing that was my first biggest mistake. “But it would be nice if I got along with my nephew.” “Joey is normally shy with new people, especially with how you two began on a rough patch. I don’t think he will warm up to you anytime soon,” I tell her, casting her a glance. She puts on a sad expression, nodding. “I guess I will find something else to do,” she says and leaves us alone. I won’t let her get to my son this time around. I have to come up with a great plan to deal with her in this life. For now, I will just observe. I drop off Joey at kindergarten and head back to the pack house. The pack is busy today. Some alphas will be coming soon for the grand annual pack meeting, which is held every year. The meeting rotates between different packs each year, and this year it’s us hosting the meeting. The pack members are running around in panic because of one particular alpha whose reputation speaks for him. Benson is instructing pack members in the field, and Jolene is watching him. She smiles at him, and he glances her way before he stares back at the warriors. How come I never noticed this before? Last time, with the pack being busy, I was up and down trying to get things in place as the pack Luna that I didn’t pay attention to what was going on right under my nose. I stand by and observe further. Jolene waves at all the men in the field, giggling when one praises how beautiful she is looking. Of course, Jolene had always been the prettier one growing up. With cherry-red hair that reaches her bubble butt and bright emerald eyes that grab all your attention, any man is bound to swoon over her, and she always uses that to her advantage. Her hair is healthier than it was two weeks ago. These two weeks have worked wonders for her. She is already turning heads in her direction. Even my own mate is casting lingering eyes at her, and I wonder how I always missed that. Having had enough of her, I get busy until it’s dinner time. Benson has invited Jolene to our main table with the excuse of her being my stepsister, so she needs to get comfortable with the pack. Other members have joined us at dinner, including the beta and gamma of the pack. “In seven days, different alphas from different packs, including the alpha of the Devilmoon pack and his twin brother, will be coming for the pack meeting. I hope everything is in place to accommodate them.” “Everything is almost in place to make sure each alpha is comfortable for their stay,” Beta Ian responds. Jolene smiles at him, and he smiles back. I nearly scoff and continue to eat quietly as I think of the alpha of the Devilmoon pack. He is one dangerous devil. His pack is the largest in the world and the most powerful. His reputation speaks for him, and no one would dare disrespect him. Benson knows to pay particular attention to him, even though he doesn’t fancy his presence. Well, not forgetting his twin, of course the one and only best doctor across all packs. Getting him to treat anyone is so damn difficult that he can only help when he feels like it. The rumours say he is more dangerous than his brother, though he is a lot calmer. I guess he is the calm-before-the-storm type. I kind of hope the brothers don’t come like they didn’t in my past life. They only sent over some apology letters. Though a part of me is curious to know what they look like, as I have never set eyes on them. “Devilmoon pack?” Joey asks in a tiny voice beside me, which I am sure everyone at this table has heard. “Oh yes, Joey, the Devilmoon pack. It’s the biggest in the world; then this one is second,” Jolene rushes to answer. How didn’t I pay attention to this in my previous life? Now that I see her for the vulture she really is, I see her in a new light. In my past life, I usually smiled things off and took her lightly until everyone in the pack, including my son and mate, turned on me and blamed me for every bad thing that happened. “They are cool, aren’t they, mummy?” Joey asks me. I nod. “But our pack is even cooler.” I pinch his little cheeks, and he giggles. Dinner is done, and I help put away the dishes while Dave puts Joey to sleep. Jolene grabs some of the dishes and finds me by the sink. “You have such a beautiful family, Luna Rose,” she comments, and I turn to face her with a fake smile. “Of course I do,” I answer. In my previous life, I went on to blabber about the nice things about my family, including my mate, and she used that to her advantage. This time, things are different. “I hope to have a beautiful family like yours one day,” she says. More like have my family. “And you will have a beautiful family as long as you find your mate,” I say. Her fake smile drops, and she forces one right back seconds after. “That’s if I ever find him.” “I am sure you will. And Jolene, I know I have never asked, but what happened to you before?” She looks startled for a minute, and I raise my eyebrows in expectation. Last time, I was afraid of asking her because it would have made her uncomfortable, but not this time around. She says, “When you left, Mum died some months after due to some illness, and I decided to leave the pack in hopes of finding my mate, but ended up in the wrong place with rogues, and I had been running ever since. Until I remembered that I have a sister and came running to you.” “But Jolene, you have to understand that you coming here was meant for recovery purposes, and you can’t be here any longer now that you have recovered,” I tell her, the blunt agreement we made. I am testing her. In my past life, when I brought up her leaving, she cried so much that she ran to my mate to support her. I want to see what she will do in this one. “But please, Luna Rose, you are my sister. You can’t just kick me out this way. I have nowhere to go except here,” she pleads. “Rose, my love.” My head jerks to the door, and Benson is casually leaning against it. “We can’t kick her out just yet. Jolene doesn’t look like someone who has the strength to be out in the wild. We need to give her more time,” he says, and I want to curse out loud. Has she gotten to him already? Jolene looks at my mate expectantly. Is there something I don’t know? “Is it okay if we discuss it later without her here?” I request, and Benson’s eyes don’t seem to agree with my request. “I don’t think it’s something that needs discussion. She is your sister; you can’t be heartless and let her leave knowing fully well all that she has endured on the outside.” So I am heartless now? I nearly let out a bitter laugh. “If you say so, then she will be given more days,” I say, and he doesn’t say anything. Jolene, on the other hand, looks pleased about this arrangement. “Alpha Benson, I thought of asking if I can join the warriors. I want to train and be strong enough to face any wolf one day if I am to leave the pack soon.” I note how she flutters her eyes when she speaks to my mate. “That’s not a problem. Your mate will be so pleased when he finds you, knowing he has a strong mate by his side.” Benson says, and I feel a pang of hurt for a moment. It was after this moment of Jolene asking to join the warriors that Benson and I began to have problems in our bond. “I just need to get stronger. I understand that Luna Rose doesn’t need to be stronger like me because she already has an alpha for a mate,” Jolene points out my weakness, secretly insulting me, and I scoff. I wait for Benson to defend me in the same way he defended Jolene, and he doesn’t. “That’s why I am the one with a mate and not you,” I cut back, and she gasps. Benson can go to hell already if he is siding with this b***h. It seems I can’t change things with him even if I tried to, so I have to watch and serve him my revenge on a silver platter too.
