Rose
I leave the kitchen and Benson chases after me.
“Honey, honey,” he calls until I stop and turn around to look at him. His honey-brown eyes soften when they look at me.
I see a flash of red by the door, quietly watching Benson embrace me.
“I can feel your anger in the bond. But you have to let your sister stay till she finds her mate at least,” he says, and here I thought he was coming to apologize for letting her talk s**t about me. Why am I expecting some type of change from him?
What surprised me in my previous life and this time is how Benson suddenly changed from the sweet mate I knew him to be to this ignorant bastard that didn’t seem to have any regard for my feelings. He is my true mate, given to me by the moon goddess, meant to protect what is his from any sort of inconvenience, and yet here he is adding up to the pain in my life.
“I thought you were coming to apologize for how she insulted me and you didn’t do anything about it.”
“About that, it’s not that she was completely wrong. You have never trained before, and you have always depended on me for safety,” he softly says, and he does this when he is insulting you. Benson isn’t the type to ever raise his voice, but that doesn’t mean his words won’t cut you deep.
“Alright, I get your point. I guess we can’t all be fighters,” I spit out in disgust at what I am hearing from him.
“But we are all wolves. If a she-wolf challenged your position, I am afraid you can’t win that fight.”
“It is well understood,” I tell him with a forced smile as I turn away and walk.
Benson is of alpha blood, and I am the daughter of a beta father and an omega mother. My mum was the weakest in the pack and died while giving birth to me. My father married this beta female who also had lost a mate and had a daughter almost my age of pure beta blood, and that daughter is Jolene, of course, and she is stronger than me by virtue of blood and rank.
I noticed how having omega blood and being weak bothered Benson when he was mated to me, but he didn’t say much then till I overheard him complaining to his beta that he had a weak link for a mate and he was afraid that it put his position at risk. After I overheard, I voiced out to him what I heard and told him that if he wasn’t proud to have a mate like me, he could always let me go. I was brave enough to say that knowing I had nowhere else to go and no chance of survival. All he did was comfort me and apologize, and that’s how I dropped the whole issue and my concern over the matter.
I should have known better in my previous life why he never defended me and somehow seemed to side with Jolene.
I head to my son’s room. It’s my go-to sanctuary whenever Benson and I have a disagreement.
He creates some space for me to join him.
“Hello, my baby,” I caress his face, pushing his luscious black hair away from his little face.
“Hello, mummy. Did you and daddy fight again?” he asks, and I sigh. He is so damn clever for his age.
“We just had a little misunderstanding, and I thought you might need some company tonight.”
“When you sleep here, then Auntie Jolene won’t come and ask to read me bedtime stories,” he says in a happy tone, and I freeze.
This is news to me.
“For how long has she been begging to read you bedtime stories?” I ask.
“For three days now, but I want you to be the one to read me bedtime stories, not her,” he pouts, and I rub his head, ruffling up his long brown hair.
“Don’t worry, mum will read them to you. If Aunt Jolene tries to get close to you in any way, make sure to reject her offer, okay, my little boy? Can you promise mummy?” I ask, looking into his deep grey eyes that he got from his father.
“Of course, mummy,” he tells me, and I kiss his little head instead.
I don’t want to lose my son to Jolene in this life. I can deal with losing Benson.
“Good boy, and remember to always tell me, okay? Don’t tell daddy, but tell me,” I emphasize that point.
I know Joey is a good boy, and he listens to what I tell him.
Jolene is slowly wedging her way into my family, and it pains me how I missed these signs until it was too late.
She had all sorts of schemes up her sleeve, and everyone in the pack saw me as the devil and her as the angel until I was finally tortured to death and treated like a witch while Benson watched the whole scene.
Joey and I sleep till morning. I am up early. A long time ago, when I was angry and slept in Joey’s room, Benson would always come and pick me up and take me back to our room till we talked things out.
My heart hurts, but I go on anyway. I make my way to our bedroom and freshen up. Benson is already out of bed, which is typical of him.
I change into a simple dress. Today might end up being a long day.
I decide to check up on Benson in his study since he does spend mornings there before his training sessions.
The door is slightly ajar, and the voices coming from inside catch my attention.
“Your mate is keen on chasing me away. Are you going to talk to her?” Jolene asks. Since when was she this free to speak to my mate this way?
I peep through, and she is sitting on the desk with her back to me.
“Don’t worry, she will be well taken care of. The pack needs a strong wolf like you in it,” Benson tells her, and I have to hold my voice.
Jolene carefully traces the collar of Benson’s dress shirt, and he doesn’t do anything to push her away. Next, she places her delicate fingers on his hand, and he only tenses before he relaxes.
“Are you sure?” she whispers in a seductive way.
“I wish I had you for a mate. Even the day I got Rose, I wished it was you I was mated to.”
“Then why didn’t you take me instead?” Jolene asks him, and I am curious to know too.
“Because I didn’t want to ignore the mate pull. But most nights, it’s your face I could see and think of.”
My breath catches as my heart hurts.
“Don’t say that. Rose is a good mate to you and a good mother,” she says, and Benson shakes his head.
“You see why you are better than her. You are saying all these good things about her while she just wants you to leave this place. You are caring, strong, and compassionate, all the things she isn’t.”
“She is my step-sister after all, and I can’t help but care for her too.”
Benson places his hands on Jolene’s cheek, and she leans into it. Benson lets out a soft growl while she purrs like the b***h she is.
“Sometimes I wish you were my mate too,” she says softly, and I pull away from the door. This is too much for me to see. All the things I missed before, I am seeing them now, and it makes sense why the moon goddess brought me back.
Seeing Benson and Jolene get that close has hurt me in an unexpected way. There was no way of saving Benson from Jolene’s claws because he wanted her for the longest time, and that’s why he is taking her side slowly.
I make some breakfast for Joey and me. The pack maid usually helps me get Joey ready while I make breakfast. He comes down in his little uniform and is ready to go to kindergarten.
“I made some tasty pancakes for you,” I tell him with excitement.
“Yay!” Joey jumps up and down. I laugh it off as I serve his breakfast. “Did you add honey?” he asks with pouty lips and adorable honey-brown eyes.
“Of course, my love.”
I finish serving, and I sit to eat with him when Benson shows up with Jolene trailing behind him.
“Where are my pancakes?” he asks, looking at the two plates I have put for Joey and me.
“Sorry, I didn’t make enough. Thought you left for training already and didn’t need some,” I smile as I tell him, and Benson’s jaw drops.
“But you always make me breakfast. How is today any different?” he asks, and I smirk.
“I already gave the reason why I didn’t make them. The kitchen staff can always make you some, or Jolene can make some too,” I smile, shrugging, making it sound like it isn’t such a big deal.
One thing he doesn’t know is that Jolene can’t cook. That’s why I have always handled the meals that are specifically his in this house.
He breathes out, snarling, before he turns and looks at Jolene.
Jolene smiles at him and casts me a forced smile before she rushes into the kitchen.
Benson is done eating, and so am I. I collect the plates, and when I reach the kitchen, Jolene is instructing the kitchen staff to make the pancakes. I grab an apple from the fridge and leave.
I give the apple to Joey since he likes them. Grabbing his little hand, we are off while I can feel Benson’s eyes burning a hole through me.
I smirk. This is just the beginning. If it’s her he is wishing to have, then it’s her he shall get.
