CHAPTER 1
In the Crystal Groove pack, a day starts with excitement for the new day. Life in one of the most organized and powerful packs was a dream come true and so many wolves longed to belong to the Crystal groove pack. The pack was an thriving, advanced community located deep in the purple woods. They prided themselves on being self self sustaining but often times mingled with the humans in the area. For Evelyn Parker, it was no such affair. Everyday started with the dread of what lay ahead, apprehension for how much work she would have piled on her head. "Evelyn!" A loud female voice called, followed by banging on her door. Evelyn jumped from her bed in a start, her heart rate doubling. "Who is it?!" She asked, she voice cracking. "What a stupid question!" The person replied followed by the sound of her door being thrown open. Evelyn scrambled to cover herself as the person ushered themselves in like they owned the place. "Jennifer!" Evelyn squeaked, rising to her feet and keeping a safe distance between her and her unwanted visitor. "How nice of your to visit!" She said, a wide forced smile on her face. Jennifer was a member of the Crystal Groove pack. She was considered as one of the potential Lunas because of her strength and beauty. She was tall, had long Chestnut brown hair and glittering green eyes. To Evelyn, she had the personality of a swamp and if she did infact become Luna, then their pack was headed for destruction. Jennifer threw her hair over her shoulder in an exaggerated manner, her nose wrinkled as she looked around Evelyn's shabby room. "My gosh this place is terrible! You should redecorate or something" "I definitely would, If I had some free time on my hands. I wonder where I would get that from, you don't happen to have some lying around do you?" Jennifer's eyes narrowed dangerously. "You disgusting little mutt. Why are you still in bed by this time?!" "I was sleeping?" Evelyn said, shrugging her skinny shoulders. "Why are you up so early?" Jennifer sighed loudly. "Gett your mutt ass up and to the pack house. We can't have you lounging around when there's just so much to be done!" She yelled, her voice getting louder with each word. Evelyn flinched, her sensitive ears twitching. "Get your ass to work, immediately!" She spun and walked out of the room, slamming the door on her way out. The poor piece of wood nearly fell right off. Evelyn sighed, rubbing her temples. Yup, it was just another day in her life as the maid of the Crystal groove pack. More like joker and fool. And also maid. She sighed softly and began to get ready. She took a quick shower at the shared bathroom in their house, and got dressed in her usual jeans and tee. The jeans were getting washed, and some areas began to thin. But she mended it each time and continued to wear it. "Were they mean to again?" A soft voice asked as Evelyn was about to leave. She turned to see Alice, her step sister. Evelyn lived with her mother and twin stepsisters; Alice and Gwen, both eleven years olds. Evelyn smiled, a convincing smile. "No, they're just as they've always been." Alice sighed. Her warm brown eyes held unshed tears. "That's the same as them being mean. Why do they treat you like this?" Evelyn shrugged, showing her bare palms worn with work. "I dunno. Maybe they think I'm a threat." Alice laughed, the sweet sound of a child's laughter. "You're not funny, you know right." Evelyn winked at her and left the house. They liv d in the outskirts of the pack community, where the oddballs were located. Evelyn's father had been a worker in the pack, he'd died right after the twins were born, leaving his family at the mercy of the privileged pack members. Evelyn never knew her birth mother, she was told she passed away a few days after her birth. Not that it bothered Evelyn, it was hard for her to miss someone she barely even knew. As she walked to the pack house, she took her time to enjoy the little sights around her. The soft dew that was quickly melting in the morning sun, the flowers, the forest life. She could feel the tiny bugs and worms crawling under the soil, the birds overheard chirped happily. The sun felt warm, the air was clean, she was happy. She was hungry. On getting to the pack house, there was Jennifer at the front door, flanked by her friends who were equally as beautiful and equally as swampy in terms of personalized. Evelyn silently prayed to the moon goddess that none of them would actually become their Luna. "Good morning ladies!" Evelyn greeted loudly as she approached them. Her smile shone in the morning sun. "You are all looking sun kissed and so beautiful this morning, may I ask your skincare routine? Especially you Vanessa, you look...." The sound of flesh hitting flesh rang out through the morning air. Evelyn's head whipped to the side before she realized she had been slapped. "Watch you mouth you filthy cur!" Vanessa screamed, spitting at Evelyn. "What makes you think you can talk to us so casually?!" Evelyn touched her face, her lip was split. She looked at the women and shrugged. "Um, you looked to be in good spirits?" Jennifer groaned. "You're the most frustrating mutt ever. Here's your list of duties for the day! Get each and ever one of them done!" She threw a piece of paper at Evelyn. Evelyn caught the paper and stared at it. Oh boy, there was even more work for her to do. "And as punishment,"Vanessa said, a wicked smile on her face "you will mark the grounds for training." Evelyn gasped. "Oh come one! Mark the grounds?! That's a job for ten people!" She winced in pain, her split lip bleeding slowly. She tore a piece of the paper in her hands and dabbed some of th blood away. "Well you better get started then!" Jennifer said in a cheery voice. "Come on girls, who's feeling like some salad for breakfast." "Me!" Evelyn exclaimed, raising her hand. "Although salad is so bland, what are you a rabbit?!" They ignored her and walked off, chatting amongst themselves. Evelyn rolled her eyes and sighed. She stared at the list in her hands. There were a lot of rooms to clean, best to get started immediately. And it had to Jennifer's room she had to do first. This day was turning out to be a nightmare. *** For a pretty girl like Jennifer, her room was a total dump. Evelyn couldn't understand how one could let their room get so messy. Her clothes were everywhere, washed and unwashed clothes alike, the floor was dirty, the curtains hadn't been washed, it was a huge mess. The only place that had some decency was her makeup table. Evelyn briefly considered trashing all her expensive makeup and blaming it on the cat. If only they had a cat. She began to load the dirty clothes into a laundry basket, removing the dirty curtains and installing new ones. She worked quickly and silently, humming a low tune to herself. She wondered how it must be like, having a room in the pack house, now having to worry about food or the cold or wild animals. It must be the nice life, mustn't it? And here they were talking it for granted. Life really was a tough piece of work. By noon, Evelyn had gone through half the tasks on her list, cleaned ten rooms and the kitchen. She was hungry, the side effects of not having breakfast biting her in the stomach. She could only snag a stale piece of bread from the kitchen which she wolfed down dry. Still it didn't help the hunger pangs. The next stop was Henry Sandler's room. Evelyn was so not looking forward to it. As she walked down the hall to Henry's room, her cleaning supplies in both hands and her heart in her mouth, she prayed to the moon goddess that she wouldn't bump into him. It wasn't that she had a problem with him, no, he was fine on his own. The problem was that if she bumped into him, it wouldn't be only him that she would bump into. And that was a whole nother level of drama she wasn't prepared to deal with on an empty stomach. She got to Henry's room and knocked twice. "Room service!" She said in a cheerful tone. There was no answer. She knocked again, still no answer. The tried the doorknob, it was open so she walked in. Henry's room was decorated tastefully in white and touches of gold. It was high noon but the room was dark, the curtains drawn. Besides, it was practically a suite which made cleaning even more work. but thanks to the moon goddess, it was for the most part very tidy. Evelyn would've been grateful, but she decided not to be. She set her supplies down and went to work, throwing open the windows, letting light and fresh air in. She hummed a merry tune to herself as she cleaned and tidied up the space. It smelled really nice in here, like a field of lemons. Evelyn wondered if lemons grew like flowers, and what a lovely sight that would be. She giggled to herself, amused at her thoughts. "That's silly." She snickered as her laugh grew. "Lemon flower bushes. What the heck?" "Are you dumb?" She screed and turned around sharply. Turns out the moon goddess had chosen to ignore her because standing behind her, looking very annoyed was none other than Henry Sandler. Evelyn controlled the urge to roll her eyes. "No sir, I am not dumb." She calmly replied. "I was merely amused at my folly." Henry was one of triplets, the very reason Evelyn had the wonderful and honorable job of being a pack maid, the triplets that is. And where one went, all went. This was soon proved true as the other two waltzed into the room, looking like they'd just finished working out and taking in loud voices. They saw Evelyn and their mirth morphed into mischief. "Well well, if it isn't our little mouse." Said Jacob Sandler. He was considered the oldest amongst the three and he prided himself on being 'manly.' Evelyn couldn't see anything manly about him, he was built like a bull with muscles so bulging he looked stupid. And he was always reworking his hair with his fingers did he think it made him look hotter? Because he only looked stupider in her eyes. sure he had pretty blue eyes, all the brothers had, but that was about the only thing Evelyn found pretty about him. Jacob was a very ruthless man and he was believed to be the alpha someday. Imagine if he got mated to Jennifer! Evelyn couldn't help but shiver at the image it constructed in her head. 'Please, gracious goddess. Let it not be true, please please please,' She prayed silently and Jacob poked her shoulder, the small gesture hurting more than it should. "I'm more of a wolf actually," She said, wishing they'd vanish so she can do her job in peace. "Oh, she can talk!" The third of the triplets, Luke Sandler said. He circled her form slowly, intimidating icy blue eyes boring through her head. He had a look of disgust on his face, like she was the most disgusting thing to work the earth. He turned to his brothers "did anyone order a talking mouse?" "Noooooo!" Jacob groaned. "Who would want a talking mouse." Evelyn laughed uneasily, trying to regain her composure as Luke didn't stop walking circles around her. If there was any of the three she looked out for, it was Luke. He was ruthless and had the most diabolical ideas for punishments. She still had a large scar in her side from the last time she crossed him. It wasn't an experience she wanted again. She started at him with fearful eyes, hoping he would show mercy on her. "Brothers, leave the girl be. She still has our rooms to clean." Henry said. "And you need to wash, you two reek of sweat." "Oh, is that so?" Jacob said, an evil twinkle in his eye. "Very well. Report to my room, little mouse." Evelyn shivered. Uh oh, this wasn't good. "I have to mark the training grounds, sir." She said but the brothers were already leaving. "That has already been done. Do not be a second late." Jacob said in sing song voice. Evelyn started at the door long after they'd left. She inhaled deeply and held it. That was not a good sign. She was sure she'd be dead by the end of the day.
