If Adaire was surprised by the question, he didn’t show it. “Well, I know the legend is that anyone who owns the book drops dead, and I understand that the cause of death is usually somehow associated with water or a mirror.” Beattie nodded. “That’s what we’ve heard, too. Was there water around MacDonald’s body?” I glanced quickly over at Beattie, but she gently tapped her foot against mine in the universal “be quiet” signal.
