Kael’s rejection echoed through the gathering as he demoted me to Selene’s slave. When he snatched my obsidian seal, I caught the forbidden scent of Witherbone weed on his skin—the exact poison that stopped the old chief’s heart last night. My mate was a murderous usurper. Watching Selene torture the old herbalist to death on the Blood Moon altar, I make my choice. I thrust my bleeding hands onto the altar’s core array. Shattering this barrier to signal the outside world means watching my only family die and condemning my cherished herb garden to ashes. The buried royal seal violently resonates with my pure blood, cracking the stone. As Kael raises his blade to silence me forever, a deafening horn pierces the night.

Chapter 1 The Scent of Rejection and Usurpation
Kael’s voice, once the anchor of my world, was now the blade gutting it. “I, Kael of the Blackwood Pack, hereby sever the bond. Elara, you are rejected as my mate.” The words echoed across the silent clearing, each one a stone thrown into the still pool of my soul. They hung in the crisp autumn air, stark and brutal. Around us, the pack watched, their faces a gallery of hungry curiosity and pitiless judgment. They had gathered for the announcement of their new Alpha, and instead, they were being served a public execution. My execution. I kept my chin level, my gaze fixed on the space just over Kael’s shoulder, where the ancient heart-tree spread its blood-red leaves against a bruised twilight sky. I would not give them the satisfaction of my tears. I would not break. Not here. Selene, draped on Kael’s arm like a pale, poisonous vine, offered a delicate, sorrowful sigh that was pure performance. “It’s for the best, Kael,” she murmured, her voice laced with venomous sweetness. “The pack needs a strong Luna. An Omega of… pure lineage.” Her eyes flickered to me, a glint of triumph in their depths. I was an Omega, yes, but a***, an herbalist. My hands were stained with dirt and chlorophyll, not perfumed with the oils of a high-born female. In their eyes, I was little more than a peasant, a footnote in Kael’s swift, brutal rise to power. The severing of a mate bond was a visceral thing. I felt it as a physical tearing deep inside my chest, a cold void where a warm, thrumming connection had lived just yesterday. It left me breathless, hollowed out. Kael, however, seemed unaffected. His face, the one I had memorized in moonlight and firelight, was a mask of cold duty. The wolf that had once sung to mine was now silent, a stranger. “Furthermore,” Kael’s voice cut through my numb shock, now hard as granite. “Due to your lowly station and… questionable influence over the former chief, you will serve as Selene’s handmaiden. You will learn your place.” A collective gasp rippled through the pack, followed by a wave of muffled jeers. A handmaiden. A slave. He was not just casting me aside; he was grinding me into the dirt. I finally met his eyes. The blue that once held galaxies of affection was now a flat, icy expanse. “I will not,” I said, my own voice surprisingly steady. It felt like it belonged to someone else, someone far stronger than the trembling girl inside me. Kael’s jaw tightened. “You have no choice.” “I do.” I took a small, deliberate step back. “I will leave the pack. You have your Alpha seat, and you have her. I ask for nothing but to take Master Theron and the herbs from my family’s garden. We will go.” Selene’s laughter was a tinkling, ugly sound. “Leave? With the pack’s most valuable assets? The old herbalist is pack property, as is your little patch of weeds.” “It’s not a patch of weeds,” I ground out, my composure finally cracking. “It’s a legacy. Generations of my family have tended it.” “A legacy of dirt-diggers,” Kael snapped, stepping forward. His proximity was a new kind of agony. The bond was broken, but the phantom limb of it still ached. “Your only legacy now is obedience.” He reached for me, his fingers curling into a command. I flinched away, my movement sharp and instinctive. As I stumbled back, the small leather pouch at my belt came loose. A single object spilled out, skittering across the packed earth before coming to a stop at Selene’s feet. It was a shard of polished obsidian, smooth and dark as a starless night, carved with a sigil I had never seen before. A gift from my mother, given to me on her deathbed with a whispered, cryptic warning: *“This is your bloodright. It will protect you when all else fails.”* Selene looked down, her lip curling in disdain. Then she deliberately, slowly, ground the heel of her boot onto the stone. A faint, sickening crackle echoed in the silence. “What is this piece of junk?” she sneered. “Another trinket you stole from the chief’s chambers before he died?” The accusation was so outrageous it stole the air from my lungs. “I stole nothing!” “Liar!” Selene’s voice rose to a shriek. “I saw you slinking from his room the night his heart gave out! You were probably trying to poison him then, too!” The pack began to murmur, the tide of their suspicion turning into a roaring wave. Old Chief Ronan had been a father to me. His death last night had shattered me. To be accused of harming him… it was a desecration. Kael’s eyes narrowed. He strode forward and bent down, plucking the obsidian from under Selene’s heel. He held it up to the fading light, his expression unreadable. “This sigil… it is not of our pack. It looks like a royal marker.” He rounded on me, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. “Where did you get this?” “It was my mother’s,” I said, my voice trembling with rage. “It is mine.” “Everything you own is now mine to dispense,” he said, his voice a low threat. He closed his fist around the stone, and for the first time, he was close enough. Close enough for me to scent him fully. And that’s when I smelled it. Underneath the familiar, woodsmoke-and-pine scent of his own skin, there was something else. A faint, acrid undertone. Something bitter, like rot and blighted almonds. It was a scent I knew intimately, a scent I had been warned never to touch, never to cultivate. Witherbone weed. A rare, highly controlled poison that causes catastrophic heart failure, leaving almost no trace. The world tilted on its axis. My blood ran cold. The pieces slammed together in my mind with brutal, horrifying clarity. Chief Ronan hadn’t just died of a weak heart. He had been murdered. And his killer was standing right in front of me, holding my inheritance, accusing me of his own crime. My mate was not just a traitor to our bond. He was a usurper. A murderer. “The old fool was fond of you,” Kael said, his voice a low whisper for my ears only, his eyes boring into mine. He saw the shift in my expression, the dawning horror, and a flicker of something dark and satisfied crossed his face. He knew that I knew. “He wanted to name you his heir, did you know that? He thought your knowledge of herbs made you more worthy than a true Alpha.” I couldn’t speak. My throat was sealed with ice. “A foolish, sentimental old man,” he continued, his grip on the obsidian tightening. “He stood in the way of the pack’s future. In the way of *my* future.” He leaned in closer still. “Now, you stand in the way.” He straightened up, turning back to the pack. His voice boomed with false authority and righteous anger. “This Omega has stolen a royal artifact, likely from our beloved late chief! For this crime, and for her insubordination, her garden is hereby forfeit! It will be searched for any other stolen items.” A wave of relief and terror washed over me. The garden. He didn't know its real secret. “Guards!” Kael commanded. “Take the old herbalist into custody. He will answer for his apprentice’s treachery.” Two hulking warriors moved toward the small cottage at the edge of the clearing, where Master Theron, old and frail, was waiting for me. Panic, sharp and piercing, finally broke through my shock. “No!” I cried, lunging forward. “Don’t touch him! He has done nothing!” Kael caught my arm in a grip of iron. He spun me around to face him, his face inches from mine. His smile was a chilling, predatory thing. “Then you will give me what I want,” he whispered, his breath a cold fog against my cheek. “The garden is just soil and leaves. I know what the real prize is. Your family has guarded it for a century.” His eyes held mine, and I knew. He wasn't just after the Alpha seat. He was after the legend. “Give me the Moonstone, Elara,” he hissed, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper that was far more terrifying than his public declarations. “Tell me how to unlock its power. Or that old man will die screaming before the next moonrise.”
