PREFACE
His footsteps echoed through the walls as he walked through the halls of the dungeon,a thousand thoughts running through his head with every step he took. could she have possibly betrayed me? He had no idea of what he was meant to expect from her,all he knew was that she was the woman who he had grown to love, who he had learnt to care for. He simply was not going to let her go without hearing her own side of the story. He hastened his footsteps as he got closer to the gates of the dungeon. " it is the king" the dungeon warden said as he sighted the king from afar " open the gates" The king ordered and the dungeon warden did so. As he got to the gate he halted suddenly overwhelmed by a wave of emotions. Two days ago he was in a foreign country envisioning his reunion with his queen but he did not expect it to be like this. He exhaled and walked into the secluded dungeon,as he walked his pace became slower and slower by the second until he finally got to where she was. He stared at her in disbelief, how could she still be so beautiful. He watched in pain as she laid on the floor in her silk white dress. why did you do it ? how dare you betray me? you'll be punished for treason. He kept thinking of what to say to her when suddenly a tear dropped from his eyes. He watched her with no thoughts in mind when she opened her eyes. " who dares to disturb the queen's sleep" she rubbed her eyes as she pushed herself up. " please cry silently... I'm trying to..." she said as she turned to see who it was and paused on seeing the king. why did you do it he had planned to ask her but his lips betrayed him. " say you didn't do it" a tear rolled down his eyes. " my king" she sighed as she said. " I won't doubt you, I'll throw whoever put you in here in a furnace... just say you didn't do it.." the King's breath became heavier as he spoke. In all her life this was the weakest she had ever seen the king and she hated the fact that she was the one causing him this much pain. She reached out slowly to touch his face. Her heart ached with everything second that passed but she knew the pain had only begun. She held the iron bars with the hand she stretched out and lets out a mocking laugh. " do you want me to lie to you?" she raises her head up and smirked. " if so then I didn't do it I'm being wrongly accused.. is that what you want to hear?" She snapped. " I did it and I'll do it again if I have to" she said crudely. She knew that if she stood face to face with him her eyes would betray her so she turned and walked away from him as a tear rolled down her cheek. " why did you do it" The king asked. The queen was surprised by his question,as well as she knew him, he should not want to see her face e by now but he was trying to understand the reason behind her betrayal. She knew she had to break him. " protection.. you were far too weak to give me that" She said coldly. The king was taken aback by what she had just said,he could hardly believe what he had just heard. He knew his queen, she was not like this. The king lost his balance and fell on his feet causing a loud thud on the floor, his guards try to run to him but he stops them. The queen looked over her shoulder as a tear falls to the ground,as much as she wished to run to him,to hold him and tell him that she was innocent, she couldn't. " get up let it not be seen or heard that the king fell on his feet in tears for a woman" "I failed you?" the king asked. He was unable to believe what he had just heard, this was not his queen. The queen knew that he was starting to see through her,she needed to end this and soon. She wiped off the tears in her eyes and turned to look at him. " Say if you were to make a choice between your kingdom and me what will your decision be?" the queen asked crudely. " I..I don't.." The king stuttered. he was surprised at his queen. " The truth is... you have never been mine I've always had to share you with the heavens or with the throne you had no time for me and I felt insecure about my safety you are a god I'm the only human in the skies and I've hated every bit of it" The queen yelled and turned her back again, she was finding it harder to hide her pains. The king found his feet and rose up " how did we become like this?" the king banged the iron bars. "the world we envision is never what we get in reality" the Queen tried to remain strong. " speaking about envisioning..when I arrived back in heaven, I had imagined our reunion will be different " the king let's out a soft laughter. " not like this" he looked at the dungeon. " not here" " Most things don't go as planned" she retorted " you know even if my army betrayed me in a battle field I would not be this hurt" the king scoffed. " we always end up trusting the ones who'll hurt us the most" " please leave I'm tired" the queen said. " I never thought I'd have regrets in life" The king sighed and turned to leave. " I won't come back here" the king said coldly. " wait.." The queen tried to control her emotions as she held his face from the bars and plants a kiss on his cheeks. " this might be the last time we'll talk" she smiled at him. He stared at her in surprise, she was still as beautiful and elegant as the first time he met her. She was still his queen.
