Laura's POV
A Father's Greed
I was waiting outside the Ocean World building dressed like a beggar. I didn't like the way I looked but I had no choice. I was doing this for Father's sake. As I sat there waiting for Anderson to arrive at work, my mind went back to the conversation I had with Dad a few days ago.
"Please my darling, you have to do this for your father. This is the only way we can set our lives on the right path. If you do this, then we would no longer have to suffer for the rest of our lives. Do you know how much wealth we can be able to accumulate from Ocean World? It's a whole lot," father said.
"But all my life, I have known you to accumulate wealth by forcefully taking away or buying companies from their owners just to become extremely wealthy. Haven't you gotten a wealthy enough? Why do you keep putting other people in so much pain?"
"Because wealth can never be enough. You have to keep getting wealthy and wealthier every day. That is why I need you to do this for me. Ocean World is a very powerful company. All I need you to do is to pull down Anderson Smith so that I can take over all his properties and wealth," father said.
"No father, I won't do this job. I have been carrying out your dirty Jobs ever since I graduated from college and I'm tired of causing people pain. I cannot do this job and I will no longer do any jobs for you," I said with a firm voice.
"I promise you child after this I will no longer make you do dirty jobs for me. Take this as the last one you will do," dad said.
"That's what you've been saying for as long as I can remember," I said.
"This time around, I mean it. I will personally draft a contract that you and I are going to sign, stating that you will no longer do any dirtier jobs for me after this one," Father said.
I looked at him in shock unable to believe that my greedy father was willing to let me go. The following day, he brought the contract and we both signed on it. I made a copy of the contract to keep for evidence. Fast forward to this morning. I was sitting outside the gate waiting for Anderson to get to work.
Anderson Smith is the CEO of Ocean Wealth. He is known to be a very successful businessman who took after his father's company after the death of his father, Smith. Surprisingly, his father and my father were best friends and business partners until Smith committed suicide. Till date, I still wonder why a wealthy man like him did such a thing. What could be possibly be depressed about that made him take his own life.
After his death, my father began to go after his wealth and company even though everything had been handed over to Anderson, his friend's son. When father told me about his plan to take the properties and the company away from Anderson, I asked him why he wanted to take away his friend’s properties and wealth away from his son.
He replied by saying that he and his friend, Smith had worked together to acquire most of the things that Smith had before he died but Smith never really appreciated him and now that Smith was dead, he had the chance to take back everything that belongs to him. Anyways here, I was still waiting for Anderson's arrival.
All of a sudden, a security Guy that worked in the company approached to me and said,
"Hey Miss, you're not supposed to be there. This is a reputable company. Pick your stuffs and leave at once."
"I can't let this common security personnel stop me from achieving my goals."I said to myself as I wore a very sad look on my face as I pleaded.
"Please, I just want to see your boss. I'm in search of a job," I said.
The security guy looked at me from head to toe before bursting into laughter. I wanted to ask him what the reason for his laughter was but I held back my tongue.
"What makes you think that my boss would hire a pickpocket like you?" The security guy asked.
Pickpocket? Did this guy just call me a pickpocket? How dare he? I fumed. I wanted to lash out at him but I knew that could blow my cover so I said,
"I'm not a pickpocket; please believe me. All I need is a job from your boss."
"I don't care what you say you are or what you're doing here but I need you to leave immediately. My boss will arrive anytime soon and he would not be pleased to meet you here," the security guy said.
I looked at him with a firm look on my face.
"I am not going anywhere," I said.
"What did you say?" The security guy asked as if unable to believe his ears.
"Read my lips: I. Am. Not. Leaving. Until. Your. Boss. Arrives," I said, taking a pause between each word.
"Then you leave me with no choice but to throw you out myself," the security guy said and began to approach me.
I got up and ran around the area and he kept pursuing me around. I dodged him several times, thanks to my athletic skills. I could see the frustration on the guy's face and a smirked appeared on my face.
"You would make me lose my job at this rate. Just leave," he said with a pleading voice, while approaching me.
I realized what he was trying to do and began to take steps back.
"Just let me see your boss," I said.
Before I knew it, he rushed at me.
"WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?" A voice interrupted.
