Naomi and the Red Bellied Falcons
Once there was an American Indian named Naomi. She was very kind to her tribe. One day she was taking a walk when she saw a falcon falling from the sky. She caught it right as it was about to fall onto a rock. It was safe. She decided to keep the falcon, for it was very young. Since she was only 13, she had some responsibilities, but not a lot. She decided to see how big and how fast it was. She tracked it at 200 miles per hour and 20inches in wingspan. It had black and white underbelly.
Since she lived in a mountain she had lots of fears, but she did not fear fire. One day when she awoke, she smelled smoke. When she looked outside she saw all the houses burning. She went back to her house and grabbed some food, some clothes, and some water. She put it all in a basket and carried her falcon out. Naomi decided to hike up the mountain and make camp there. But that would take longer than she thought because her bird had hurt its wing during the fire.
Naomi decided to look for any of her tobes survivors. When she started her hike, she found Alison, her best friend. Alison had rescued a hummingbird a month before. Naomi told Alison that her bird had hurt its wing. Alison said,’’ It might never fly again.’’Naomi was devastated, but she knew she had to ask Alison how the fire started, so she did. Alison had a story to tell. She told Naomi that that that chiefs house had been invaded and the invaders started the fire. Alison said it had kept spreading.
As they were talking Naomi said,’’ Shh did you hear that?’’ Boom! Boom! Boom! As they shouted at the last second avalanche!’’ They ran as they could, but it was to fast. They couldn’t keep running, so they stopped. As they stopped Naomi’s bird grew huge and spread its wings. The avalanche parted when it hit her bird. They were safe!
Naomi and Alison went back to the village. It took a few days, but it was worth it. They found red paint and painted the white streaks on her birds under their belly. It represented kindness. She named her bird Maurice.
