Chapter One
The gavel came down with a sharp c***k, sealing my fate.
"Sold to Mr. Blackwood for two million dollars."
The crowd erupted into applause, a sea of glittering gowns and predatory smiles. My stomach twisted as I stood on the auction block, clad in nothing but a silk robe that barely covered my thighs. The charity event—a night of giving—had turned into a spectacle of wealth and power, and I was the prize.
My gaze snapped to the man who had just bought me.
Him.
Lucas Blackwood.
Billionaire. Ruthless businessman. The most dangerous man in New York.
His dark eyes burned into mine, unreadable yet brimming with something that made my pulse spike. He was all sharp edges—a tailored black suit that clung to his broad shoulders, a jawline that could cut glass, and a mouth that looked like it had forgotten how to smile.
The auctioneer handed him the contract—my contract—and Lucas’s lips curled into something that wasn’t quite amusement.
"You’re mine for the next thirty days, Miss Hart." His voice was low, rough, sending an unwelcome shiver down my spine.
I clenched my fists, my nails biting into my palms. "I didn’t agree to this."
His smirk deepened. "Your stepmother did."
That b***h.
Of course she had. After my father’s death, she’d wasted no time draining his accounts and selling off anything—or anyone—that stood in her way. Including me.
Lucas stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne and power wrapping around me. "You’ll come with me tonight."
It wasn’t a request.
The crowd watched, hungry for drama, as I lifted my chin. "And if I refuse?"
His fingers brushed my wrist, sending a jolt through me. "Then I’ll drag you out of here in front of everyone. Your choice."
The threat was real. The humiliation would be worse.
Swallowing my pride, I stepped off the platform, my bare feet cold against the marble floor. Lucas’s hand settled at the small of my back, possessive and firm, as he guided me through the murmuring crowd.
Outside, a sleek black limousine waited, its tinted windows hiding whatever horrors lay inside. Lucas opened the door, his gaze daring me to run.
I didn’t.
The moment the car door shut, he turned to me, his voice a dark promise.
"Now, let’s discuss the real reason I bought you."
"The real reason?" I repeated, my voice steadier than I felt.
His fingers drummed against his knee, slow and deliberate. "You don’t actually think I spent two million dollars just for the pleasure of your company, do you?"
A flush crept up my neck. "I wouldn’t know what a man like you spends his money on."
"A man like me?" His smirk was razor-sharp. "Go on. Enlighten me."
I held his gaze, refusing to back down. "Power. Control. Things you can own."
Something dark flickered in his eyes. "And yet, here you are."
The car glided through the city, neon lights flickering across his sharp features. I should have been terrified—maybe I was—but anger burned hotter.
"What do you want from me?"
He leaned in, his breath warm against my ear. "Revenge."
The word sent a chill through me.
I pulled back. "Against who?"
"Your stepmother."
A bitter laugh escaped me. "Join the club."
His expression didn’t change. "She stole something from me. And you’re going to help me get it back."
My pulse hammered. "Why me?"
"Because you’re the only one she cares about."
Another laugh, this one hollow. "You clearly haven’t met her."
His fingers caught my chin, forcing me to look at him. "She took your father’s company. His fortune. His legacy. And now she’s sold you off like livestock." His thumb brushed my bottom lip, a mockery of tenderness. "Tell me you don’t want to ruin her."
I did. God, I did.
But at what cost?
I jerked away. "What exactly are you asking?"
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document. "A contract. You play the role of my fiancée for thirty days. You attend events with me. You smile when I tell you to. And in return, I take back what’s yours."
I snatched the papers, scanning the legalese. "This says nothing about giving me back my father’s company."
"Because I’m not giving it to you." His voice was ice. "I’m giving you the means to take it yourself."
I stared at him. "How?"
"By the end of this month, you’ll have enough leverage to destroy her." His gaze dropped to my mouth. "If you’re brave enough to use it."
The car slowed, pulling up to a towering penthouse—his penthouse. The glass walls reflected the city below, a kingdom built on money and ruthlessness.
Lucas stepped out, offering his hand. "Well, Miss Hart? Do we have a deal?"
I hesitated.
This was a devil’s bargain. But the fire in my chest roared louder than the fear.
I took his hand.
"Thirty days."
His grip tightened, pulling me close enough to feel the heat of his body. "One more condition."
I stiffened. "What?"
His lips brushed my ear, his voice a dark whisper.
"You share my bed."
