Unknowns

The thick, eerie mist hung so heavily that it was like walking through a wall. It clung to everything, droplets of water trickling down the leaves of the towering trees that loomed overhead. The weak moonlight that filtered through the fog was just enough to cast eerie shadows across the ground. The two men moved silently, their every footstep squishing through the damp earth below them. They were both tall, with broad shoulders and chiselled features. One had jet-black hair slicked back, the other a platinum blonde shock hanging messily across his forehead. “We have to find her,” the man with jet-black hair said, finally breaking the silence. His voice was low and husky, with a hint of desperation. “We can’t let her get away.” The blonde man nodded, his pale face set in a grim expression. “I know,” he said, his voice equally low. “We have to be careful. We’ve never been this close to finding her before. I can feel it in my bones.” As they walked, they scanned the darkness for any sign of their quarry. The mist made seeing more than a few feet ahead almost impossible, but they strained their eyes. The only sound was the squishing of their boots in the mud and the occasional hoot of an owl in the distance. “Do you even know what he wants from her or who she is to him? He’s been hunting her for a long time. Do you think he will eventually give up?” The blonde man complained. The jet-black hair men replied, “I hope he does, for all of our sakes.” The blond man nodded. As they walked, their appearance became more and more striking, even seductive. Their perfectly formed bodies seemed to move with a grace and fluidity that was almost supernatural. Their skin was pale and luminous as if they were creatures of the night, and their eyes glowed almost frighteningly. At last, they emerged from the forest into a small clearing. The two men paused for a moment, smelling the surrounding air. “She’s been here, or close to here,” the first man said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I can feel it, an energy I’ve never felt before. We may finally get to her.” The second man nodded, eyes scanning the darkness beyond the small clearing. “But where is she now?” he asked, his voice low and urgent. The first man shrugged. “Do you smell that? I think we’re getting close to mutt territory. Be careful. We don’t need a fight on our hands right now, on top of everything,” the slick black hair man said coldly. They turned around to get away from pack territory. They didn’t need that kind of attention tonight. As the two men trudged through the dense forest, the rustling of leaves beneath their feet was the only sound that broke the silence of the night. Suddenly, a third man appeared from behind the trees, and the other two men jumped back in surprise. “Who are you?” the blond-haired man asked, his hand instinctively reaching for his weapon. The third man shivered as he approached them, his eyes darting nervously from side to side. “I’m sorry to have startled you,” he said, his voice quivering. “But the master has sent me to inform you we must regroup. There have been some developments.” The two men exchanged a curious glance before returning to the stranger. They knew not to question the master. But this was strange. They felt so close, yet they were being called back? “What developments?” asked the man with slick black hair, his tone laced with suspicion. The third man took a deep breath before responding. “There have been rumours of sightings of the one we are searching for. The master believes we may close in on her.” The two men’s faces lit up with confusion at the news. “But we are on her trail. This makes little sense!” The third man hesitated for a moment before finally responding. “I’m afraid I don’t have that information. You know the master, he’s not very forthcoming,” he said apologetically. “But the master has requested that you return to the base immediately. He has a plan, and he needs your help.” The two men nodded in agreement, realizing the urgency of the situation. “Lead the way,” said the second man, gesturing for the third man to take the lead. As they returned to the base, the three men engaged in a calm conversation, discussing the implications of the recent developments. They introduced themselves. The man with slick black hair said, “I am Nikolai, and this is my partner, Pavel.” The third man nodded in agreement before speaking. “I am Sergei.” Pavel shifted uneasily. “Nobody informed us that another individual would be on this mission.” Nikolai raised an eyebrow skeptically, “What is your background?” Sergei hesitated before answering, “I come from a long line of hunters. My family has been involved in this work for generations.” Patel narrowed his eyes. “And yet, we have never heard of you before. What is your specific expertise?” Sergei took a deep breath before responding, “I specialize in tracking and surveillance. I have a unique ability to blend into my surroundings and remain undetected.” Nikolai looked unconvinced, but he pushed on. This added individual was not good for them remaining inconspicuous. They couldn’t be uncovered. As they returned to the designated meeting spot, Nikolai and Pavel exchanged a worried glance. They knew nothing of this stranger, and why he interfered with their mission went against protocol. They were unsure of Sergei’s true intentions. Once they arrived, another unknown man was waiting for them, a look of urgency on his face. “Gentlemen, there have been some developments. Our target has moved, and we must adjust our strategy accordingly.” Deep within the forest, a secluded base camp stood enveloped by dense foliage and towering trees. Dim lanterns scattered around emitted a feeble glow, casting eerie shadows on the ground. The air reeked of damp earth, decaying leaves, and musty wood, creating a suffocating atmosphere. The castle-like building had moss-covered walls, ivy crawling up, a rusted metal roof, and dirty, cobwebbed windows. Its entrance boasted a thick, weathered door secured by a rusty padlock. Nikolai spoke up, “What is our new plan?” The new man introduced himself, leaning in closer. “I am our master’s right hand, Dimitri. We have news that the one he seeks has moved.” He paused. “We will split up into two teams. Pavel and Sergei, you will track the target’s movements and report back to us. Nikolai and I will prepare for the abduction.” Pavel and Sergei nodded in agreement before heading out while Nikolai and Dimitri prepared their weapons. As they worked, Nikolai mind linked with Pavel. “We need to be wary. We’ve never been this close to the master. We cannot cross Dimitri. Keep your guard up.” Pavel nodded in agreement and replied over the mind link, “I share your concerns. We must remain vigilant and monitor them to avoid failing our mission.” Abruptly, Dimitri’s voice broke the silence. It was velvety and filled with excitement. “She lives! She’s alive!” His chuckle echoed through the night like a haunting lamentation.
