Searching for answers

Gabriel’s parents got to his quarters quickly. They knocked and entered. Gabriel shouted to meet him in the living room. When they entered, Markus glanced at the she-wolf beside Gabriel, studying her carefully. There was something about her that intrigued him, something mysterious. “Father, Mother, we need to talk,” Gabriel’s voice was urgent, his eyes flicking between his parents and the she-wolf beside him. “Something happened tonight, and we need your help to make sense of it.” Markus nodded solemnly, his eyes narrowing as he took in the gravity of his son’s words. “Okay, I’m listening,” he said, gesturing for Gabriel to continue, but his gaze remained fixed on the she-wolf, his curiosity piqued. Gabriel took a deep breath, his hand instinctively reaching out to pull Lila closer as if seeking comfort in her presence. “The short story is Lila is my mate, and I’m her mate,” he said, his voice low and filled with awe and confusion. “Our wolves both declared it.” Markus and Gloria both gasped, exchanging surprised glances. Gloria spoke up, her voice filled with astonishment. “Gabs, this is the she-wolf we recently took in? The one found unconscious by our patrollers?” She looked at Lila with renewed interest, trying to decipher the secrets hidden behind her enigmatic gaze. “What happened to suddenly make it so that your wolves would identify each other as mates?” Gabriel sighed, his eyes locking with Lila as he recalled the night's events. He described the tingling sensation he had felt when he had touched her. He briefly touched on the electrifying kiss they had shared and how Lila’s wolf had urged her to shift for the first time. He spoke of the bewildering allure of her scent and the way their wolves had called out to each other as mates. Markus interrupted, his voice laced with disbelief. “Wait, what?” he exclaimed, his mind racing. “Lila’s wolf urged her to shift for the first time? That’s impossible. She’s too old for her first shift. She seems more in her early 20s...” His voice trailed off, his mind swirling with questions. Something didn’t add up, and he couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling that there was more to this situation than met the eye. Lila’s eyes glittered with mystery as she looked at Markus, her expression inscrutable. “That’s what makes it so baffling,” she whispered, her voice tinged with an enigma. “There’s so much we don’t understand yet, but I can assure you, it’s all very real. And yes, I am 21. I understand I should have shifted some while ago. Despite my wolf remembering my name, I still do not have any memories. I’m not even sure what the mate bond means.” Markus exchanged a wary glance with Gloria, and they both fell silent, lost in thought. The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension, and the unanswered questions hung in the air like a palpable fog. Gabriel and Lila shared a meaningful glance. Their connection was unmistakable, and the urge to discover the mystery that connected them only intensified. As Markus finally broke the silence, his voice barely above a whisper, the intrigue and suspense in the room intensified. “We need to figure this out,” he said gravely, his eyes searching for answers. “There’s more to this than meets the eye, and we won’t rest until we understand it.” His words hung in the air. “I know,” Gabriel replied, frustration clear in his voice. “It’s strange, and I’m unsure what we should make of it.” Markus looked at Lila, studying her carefully. She was quiet, her gaze downcast. He suspected this would overwhelm her, and he wanted to help her. “Lila dear,” he said, turning to her. “Are you okay? This must be quite overwhelming. Did you want us to talk to you about the mate bond?” She looked up at him, nodding slowly. “I’m bewildered, that’s sure,” she admitted. “Yet, being with Gabriel seems the most natural thing in the world.” Gabriel brought her closer to sit on his lap. He breathed in her scent. She smelled wonderful. “Maybe we can go into those details another time?” Markus sighed, then turned back to Gabriel. “I’ll go to the supernatural library at the University of Toronto. If there is one place to get answers, it will be there. Just something about this late first shift reminds me of something.” As they returned to their quarters, Gloria looked outside and mused. “This is a very peculiar situation, just like the blue moon gracing us tonight…” she trailed off. Markus looked at Gloria. Her mentioning the blue moon, the late shift of this she-wolf, why was that all sounding familiar to him?
