The Saturday Café Meeting

Chapter 16: The Saturday Café Meeting The rain from earlier in the week had left the Saturday air crisp and clear. Sunlight streamed through the large front windows of The Crescent Café, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. Zara sat at their usual corner table, staring intently at her laptop screen, though she hadn't actually read a single line of text in ten minutes. Her mind was entirely consumed by what had happened at City Hall, and the prayer of Istikhara she had made the night before. She felt a strange, calm certainty in her chest, but her hands were still trembling. The bell above the door chimed, and a gust of fresh autumn wind swept into the café. Zara looked up. Zayd walked in, adjusting the collar of a beige wool coat. He looked tired, with slight dark circles under his eyes, but the moment his gaze found hers, a soft, relieved expression broke across his face. "Assalamu Alaikum," he said gently, pulling out the wooden chair across from her. "Walaikum Assalam," Zara replied, forcing her voice to remain steady. "You look like you didn't sleep at all." Zayd let out a dry, self-deprecating laugh as he set his laptop down. "Is it that obvious? Yeah, I was up until 3:00 AM refactoring the database structure for the parent portal. Now that the building lease is officially signed, I wanted to make sure the software is completely ready for the initial testing phase. I didn't want to hold us back." Zara looked at him, her heart swelling with an emotion so intense it frightened her. He was exhausting himself, working late into the night, all to ensure her dream succeeded. "Zayd, you need to take care of yourself. The clinic is important, but your health is too. Islam teaches us moderation in everything, remember?" Zayd paused, his fingers resting on the lid of his laptop. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, raw intensity that made her breath catch. "I know. But when it comes to this project... and to you... I find it really hard to pace myself. I just want everything to be perfect." The air between them instantly grew heavy with unsaid words. The strict professional barrier they had built so carefully felt like it was beginning to c***k.
