An Unexpected Emergency

Chapter 10: An Unexpected Emergency Two weeks passed under their strict, self-imposed "professional only" rule. It was an agonizing exercise in discipline. Their text messages, which used to be filled with lighthearted banter and shared enthusiasm, had shrunk to short, polite fragments completely focused on data metrics, clinic zoning laws, and building contractors. Zara deeply missed the easy laughter and warmth from their first café meeting. Every time she wanted to text him a funny thought or an encouraging word, she forced herself to delete it. She had to stay disciplined to protect her dream. On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Zara was sitting at her office desk, staring at a stack of curriculum files, when her phone buzzed violently against the wood. She picked it up, expecting a routine update. Instead, her heart dropped into her stomach as she read an urgent message from Zayd. Zayd: Zara, are you free? The city zoning board just rejected our application for the building lease. They claim the space isn't properly zoned for a medical charity. If we don't appeal this by 5:00 PM today, we lose the location completely. Zara froze, cold dread washing over her. That building on Orchard Street was absolutely perfect. It was close to public transit for low-income families, affordable for their tight budget, and possessed the exact layout needed for a sensory therapy room. Losing it would push their launch back by at least six months, if not cancel the project entirely. She looked at the clock on her computer. It was 3:45 PM. They had less than an hour and fifteen minutes to save their dream. Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she texted back. Zara: I’m leaving my office right now. Meet me at the City Hall building in twenty minutes. Bring all the software compliance documents and the original architectural blueprints. We are not losing this building. She grabbed her trench coat and her heavy leather briefcase, barely remembering to lock her office door behind her. As she ran out into the pouring rain, her umbrella turning inside out against the fierce autumn wind, she wasn't thinking about her strict boundaries anymore. All she could think about was Zayd waiting for her, and the vulnerable children who needed this clinic to open on time. They were going to have to fight for their dream side-by-side, and there was no room for hesitation.
