Chapter 1 : A Night To Remember
The sound of rain pattering against the windows of the small diner echoed through the quiet evening. Inside, Xyla Reyes wiped her hands on her apron, glancing at the clock. Only an hour left on her shift. The night felt endless, and her exhaustion was catching up. "Another long day, huh?" asked Maya, her coworker, leaning against the counter. Xyla nodded, pulling her messy brown hair into a bun. "You have no idea. But I need the money. Gotta keep going, you know?" Maya smiled sympathetically. "You always say that. When do you ever take a break, Xyla? You're going to burn out." Xyla sighed, leaning against the counter. "Can't afford to stop. Morning classes, then this... I'll rest when I graduate." The door chime rang, cutting their conversation short. A man in a hooded jacket walked in, his face hidden in shadows. Xyla stiffened, her instincts on high alert. The diner wasn’t in the safest part of town, but it was rare to have any real trouble. Still, something about this guy felt off. “Be right with you,” Maya called, but the man didn’t respond. Instead, he walked straight toward Xyla, his movements almost too smooth, too fast. “Xyla?” Maya’s voice was shaky now, realizing the strange atmosphere. Xyla stepped back, her eyes never leaving the man as he drew closer. “Can I help you?” He stopped a few feet away, his face still concealed. “You shouldn’t be here this late,” he said, his voice low and unnervingly calm. Xyla narrowed her eyes. “Excuse me?” The man slowly lifted his head, revealing pale skin and eyes that gleamed unnaturally in the dim light. “It’s dangerous at night.” Before she could react, the lights flickered. The man lunged at her, faster than she could comprehend. Xyla barely had time to scream as he grabbed her arm, pulling her close. His mouth opened, revealing sharp, gleaming fangs. A gunshot rang out. The man released her, a pained snarl escaping his lips as he staggered back. Xyla stumbled, gasping for air, clutching her arm. She looked up just in time to see another figure step out from the shadows near the door, gun in hand. “Get away from her,” the stranger ordered. The man who attacked Xyla hissed, his eyes flashing with fury before he vanished—disappearing into thin air as if he was never there. “What the hell was that?” Xyla muttered, heart pounding in her chest. Her legs felt weak, and her breath was shaky. Maya was frozen in shock behind the counter, her eyes wide in disbelief. “Xyla, are you okay?” the stranger asked, his voice now calm. She blinked, trying to process what just happened. “I… I think so. But who are you?” The man stepped closer, his hood still covering most of his face. “You need to leave this place. You’re not safe.” “Who the hell are you?” Xyla demanded, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anger. The stranger slowly lowered his hood, revealing his face. Xyla gasped. She hadn’t seen him in years, but there was no mistaking those piercing gray eyes. “It’s me, Kade. Do you remember me?” Her breath caught in her throat. “Kade Arvien?” She took a step back, her mind reeling. “No, that’s impossible. You disappeared when we were kids… after your dad—” “Died,” Kade finished. “Yeah. I’m sorry I vanished, Xyla. But there’s something you need to know. That guy who attacked you? He wasn’t human. He was a vampire.” Xyla stared at him in disbelief. “A vampire? That’s not… no. That can’t be real.” Kade sighed, putting the gun back in his holster. “I know how crazy it sounds, but trust me, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t the truth. My father didn’t die in an accident, Xyla. He was killed by vampires. And now they’re after you.” Xyla’s mind raced. Everything felt surreal, like a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from. “Why would they be after me?” Kade shook his head, his expression grim. “I don’t know yet. But I’m going to find out. And I need you to stay out of it. It’s too dangerous.” “Stay out of it?” Xyla shot back, her fear shifting into frustration. “You can’t just come back after seventeen years, tell me vampires are real, and then expect me to sit on the sidelines!” Kade sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I get that, but—” “No!” Xyla interrupted. “I deserve to know what’s going on. You’re not going to protect me by keeping me in the dark.” They stood in silence, the tension between them thick. Xyla’s heart was still racing, but now it wasn’t just from fear. She couldn’t believe Kade was standing in front of her after all these years. And yet, everything he was saying seemed impossible. Kade finally relented, his voice softening. “Okay. We’ll talk tomorrow. But not here, and not now. It’s not safe.” Xyla hesitated. “You’re leaving again?” “I have to. I need to make sure this place is secure first.” He glanced around the diner, his sharp gaze scanning the dark corners. “Tomorrow,” he repeated, his eyes meeting hers again. “I promise.” Xyla nodded slowly. “Okay. Tomorrow.” As Kade turned to leave, Xyla couldn’t shake the feeling that her world had just been turned upside down. Vampires. Kade. Seventeen years of silence, broken by the strangest night of her life. Her hand went to her arm, the spot where the vampire had grabbed her still tingling. She wasn’t sure what to feel—fear, confusion, maybe even a little bit of hope. But one thing was certain. Tomorrow couldn’t come fast enough.
