Chapter Four: First shift

Rheya POV

“No dear. It was real. I had the same thing happen to me. I’m sorry I couldn’t prepare you, but we always thought it was better to be surprised by her visit.” My mom sat on the edge of my bed giving me a water bottle. “Here honey, I was dying of thirst after my visit with her.”

I smack my lips together and noticed how dry they were, and I grabbed the water and instantly began chugging it down. I finished the whole bottle in record time. “Mom she was beautiful!” I explained once I caught my breath.

“Yes, the Moon Godd- “she started but I interrupted. “NO mom not the Moon Goddess, I mean she was-IS beautiful but I’m talking about my wolf! And her name! It was as perfect as her!”

“You met your wolf? Like outside of your shift?” My mom questioned me. I replied, “Is that not common? She wanted me to bear her image but wanted to ask my permission first…Imagine that, the moon goddess asking for MY permission!”

“No honey I don’t think that’s ever happened…and for you to bear her image…” my mom started and trailed off before she continued, “I KNEW YOU WERE SPECIAL!” She hugged me in the tightest hug ever.

Then Natalie came walking in with a tray of food, “Hey you slept so long I was beginning to get worried, I brought you some lunch in case you were hungry!” She placed the tray on my bedside table and climbed into my bed. Only then did I look at the clock, 3 PM! I slept for 5 hours! It felt I just laid down in bed. 

“Who let me sleep for 5 hours?!” I yelled out. Natalie gave a look to my mom, “Your mom wouldn’t let anyone bug you, apparently you really needed your beauty sleep.” She ruffled my messy hair. WOW I really did sleep harder than I thought.

“The Goddess’s time doesn’t run the same as ours…I wanted to give you as much time with her as possible…”my mom smiled shyly.

“Well, I am definitely ready to shift now. Mom? Can you get the family and pack gathered? I know I said I wanted it to just be me and Natalie but with my newfound knowledge I feel like everyone should be there to witness what’s about to happen.” I asked my mom. She nodded and started mind linking people, then she walked out of the room. A mind link is how most packs communicate, but we can only link after we've had our first shift.

“What’s about to happen?” Natalie asked me.

“Just meet me in front of the house in 5 minutes, I’m going to change into some clothes I don’t mind shredding.” I said as I pushed her out of my room.

I went to the bathroom and washed all the makeup off my face and brushed my hair. I figured I should look a little presentable before I do this. I then grabbed some old pajama shorts and a loose fitting, both of which I don’t mind being torn apart. I said a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess thanking her for the opportunity before walking out of my room and down the stairs. By time I made it to the front everyone was waiting for me. My mother and father stood already in their wolf forms, waiting for me. Natalie and my siblings were not old enough to shift yet but I wanted them to be here still, they deserved to see my wolf form as well.

“You can do this. It’ll hurt like a b***h but just think of the outcome and get through it,” Natalie said as she grabbed my second set of clothes from my hand.

I nodded and walked down the steps and into the grass to address the pack, “Pack members! I’ve asked you all here to witness my first shift, I know once I shift, I’ll be open to mind linking and I’m sure you all will have questions once I keep! Please don’t bombard me!” I could see a lot of confused faces, but they all murmured agreements.

With that out if my way I look to my parents, and even though my dad was a wolf I could still see in his body language he was confused as well, my mom just nudged him and gave me a small nod of her head. I smiled nervously at them both, I’m ready but still scared.

I took a moment of silence and caught my breath and prepared myself as much as possible. It should be easier to hear my wolf in my head since I already know what she looks like and her name.

“Sotiras?” I called out to her in my head…nothing. I concentrated and pushed a bit more…” Sotiras…come out come out wherever you are!” I yelled mentally. Then I felt it. A pain like no other, like my body was on fire but itching at the same time. I fell to my knees still closing my eyes. The fire only got hotter and finally I felt the first POP, my bones are beginning to shift. A few more pops and cracks rang through my body with the pain only getting more intense by the second. Finally, a cold feeling hit the back of my head giving me a small break.

“Just breath through, were almost done. Give in to me, the pain comes from the fight. Accept me as whole and it will be over quicker.” I heard a voice in my head.

With my last bit of strength, I screamed out loud and in my mind “I accept you!” and in that instant the fire ceased. There was still pain and discomfort from my bones shifting, but it was no worse than a broken bone which I’ve experienced plenty of times, it was the flames that were killing me.

“That’s it dear, a little longer. It will be worth it. The First Mother believes in us,” the voice, which I assume is Sotiras encourages me further.

Finally, after what felt like hours but was a mere 10 minutes, I have completely shifted into my wolf form. I opened my eyes to see everyone staring at me in amazement, even my father.

I stand shakily and realize I’m as tall as my father! My wolf is not only gorgeous but she’s huge! Normally females are tiny compared to males, even my mother who is also an alpha is still a little bit smaller than my dad, but here I am, level height with my dad.

“Holy s**t…she looks just like Moon Goddess!” I turn around to Natalie who finally broke the silence. Her mother nudges her and gives her a stern look for cursing and using the goddess’s name in the same sentence.

I turn around and face the pack and let out a loud howl which causes a wave of cheers out loud and many members mind link me congratulating me. I look to my parents and mind like them, “Can we run now? Sotiras is itching to stretch her legs!”

My mother nods her head and my father replies “Yes dear. I’ll let the pack know whoever wants to join can!” His eyes cloud over for a moment while he addresses the pack and about half of them shift in an instant ready to run. My father’s let out a howl before he takes of and my mother and I follow. Since us three are alphas we are unmistakably faster, but what I didn’t expect was being faster than both my parents. I hadn’t even realized I was leading the pack run until we came to a stop in the large clearing in the forest by the stream. Tyler who was a dark brown wolf (the most common color) approached me and nudged me playfully, signaling he wanted to wrestle. I guess his yearn to beat me in a match doesn’t end at just our human forms. He almost got me pinned a few times, I'm not quite used to fighting in my wolf form but hes had a few months to prepare, but I still manage to get him down every time. 

By time Tyler finally submits and stops challenging me, most of the pack has gone back to the pack house, leaving my parents, Tyler, myself, and the guards. It’s almost dark now so we decide to run back to the house, of course I beat everyone back. The Beta family is waiting for all of us with clothes. My parents and Tyler shift back into human form easily and redress, but I know it will take me a minute since it is my first shift. I concentrate on my human form and begin to shift. It’s not nearly as painful as shifting into my wolf but it is still uncomfortable to say the least.

Once my shift is completed, I start to walk towards Natalie to grab my change of clothes. I realize everyone is staring at me. I know being in the nude doesn’t bother us since we all shift and see it one time or another, but they don’t need to stare this much. As if sensing how uncomfortable I am with all the attention my mother speaks up, “Honey you don’t need those.” She points to the clothes Natalie is holding. I look at her confused before Natalie tugs at the shirt I was wearing earlier, somehow it wasn’t shredded!

“Huh…I guess the First Mother decided you could have some of her powers!” Natalie called out.

“It makes sense, you carry her image, so I guess its not too far off to say you’ll carry some power.” Tyler replied nonchalantly

“Hell yeah! Now I don’t have to worry about shifting wherever! This is great! I wonder if she gave me any other powers!” I explained happily. “She did, but you’ll find them out in due time, when you really need them!” I heard my wolf say. I nodded to her before I spoke again. “Welp, I’m exhausted guys. Thank you all for being here to support me. I love you all”

I gave them all a hug before heading into the kitchen to grab of a sandwich for a later dinner and head up to my room for the night. It was already 9:30 at night! Damn, time flies when you’re wolfing out, I quickly ate and showered before I climbed into bed and had the best sleep of my life.
