Chapter 1: Shattered Bonds
The scent of freshly brewed tea fills the small infirmary, its warmth comforting. But there’s nothing that can settle the knot in my stomach as I tidy up the medical supplies. Another quiet day. Another day in which I’ve been nothing but the pack’s doctor. And that’s fine. It’s the life I’ve built for myself—alone, but steady. But today, my hands shake slightly as I place the last bandage on the shelf. Maybe it’s the air, the slight chill in the room, or the feeling that something is about to change.
I’m used to the silence of this space. Used to the long hours of tending to injuries, cleaning wounds, and mending broken bones. I’ve made this place my own, away from the scornful eyes of those who can’t understand why an Omega like me is allowed any sort of purpose in the pack. Still, I’m content. Or at least I tell myself that.
The door creaks open, pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Camila, you need to come with me.” The voice is sharp but familiar. Kayla.
I glance up, meeting her gaze. Her green eyes are wide, full of something unspoken. I stand slowly, wiping my hands on my apron.
“Is something wrong?” I ask, the question tumbling out before I can stop it.
Kayla hesitates before grabbing my wrist, her fingers tight.
“Just come with me, please.”
Before I can protest, she pulls me out of the infirmary and into the cool evening air. The wind stirs my hair, but it’s not the chill that makes me shiver. It’s the feeling that something is wrong. Kayla’s urgency, the way she doesn’t explain what’s going on—it all adds up to something I don’t want to face.
“Where are we going?” I ask, trying to keep my voice steady, though my heart is hammering in my chest.
“Just trust me,” she mutters, not meeting my eyes.
We move through the village quickly, the sound of our footsteps echoing in the quiet. The sky above us is a deep violet, stars just beginning to twinkle. The night feels like a blanket wrapping around me, pulling me into something dark and heavy.
When we reach the grand hall, I freeze. The place where the Alpha holds court. Where he makes decisions. Where the pack gathers. I look at Kayla, confusion and fear creeping in.
“What’s going on? Why are we here?” My voice trembles now, but she doesn’t respond. She just steps forward, leading me into the large, grand building.
The moment I walk inside, the room goes quiet. The air is thick with tension. Dozens of eyes turn toward me, their gazes assessing, calculating. I stand there, rooted to the spot, confusion tightening its grip on my chest.
And then I see him.
Benjamin.
The Alpha.
My stomach sinks as my eyes meet his, and I realize—he’s not alone. Beside him stands someone I know all too well.
Kayla.
My best friend.
My heart skips a beat as my mind races, trying to piece together what’s happening. But there’s only one thing I can feel: the painful weight of betrayal.
“Benjamin, what’s going on?” I ask, my voice a hoarse whisper.
Benjamin looks at me with those cold, indifferent eyes. “I’ve found my mate,” he announces, his voice loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
My heart stops. The room seems to close in around me.
“I’m sorry, what?” The words leave my mouth without thinking. My eyes dart between Benjamin and Kayla. I can’t breathe.
Benjamin’s gray eyes flicker to me, and for a moment, there’s a flicker of something there. Something I can’t name. But then it’s gone, replaced by a cold detachment.
“Kayla is my mate,” he says simply, as though it’s the most natural thing in the world.
I take a step back, my head spinning. This can’t be happening. It can’t be real.
Kayla steps closer to Benjamin, her smile bright and triumphant. She reaches up and places a hand on his arm, the touch casual but possessive. I feel my world collapse, the ground beneath me giving way.
“No,” I whisper, shaking my head, trying to steady myself. “No, this isn’t right.”
Benjamin looks at me with narrowed eyes. “You don’t get to question this, Camila. I’ve made my choice.”
I open my mouth to protest, but no words come out. This isn’t real. This can’t be happening. Kayla was supposed to be my friend. My only real friend.
But she’s standing there, clinging to him, as if she’s always belonged there. As if she was never the one who helped me, who promised to stand by me. The truth crashes into me like a tidal wave.
“I’m sorry,” Benjamin continues, his voice cold, “but I’ve always known. From the moment I scented her—she’s the one.”
I feel the sharp sting of tears burning behind my eyes, but I refuse to let them fall. Not in front of them. Not now.
“You—” I choke on the words. “You were my mate, Benjamin. You—”
Benjamin’s expression hardens, and my words trail off. He doesn’t even look at me anymore. He’s focused on Kayla. His mate.
“Leave, Camila,” he says. His tone is final. “This isn’t your place anymore.”
A sick feeling churns in my stomach as I turn and stumble out of the hall. I can hear the whispers behind me, but I don’t stop. I can’t stop. My body moves on its own, carrying me out into the cool night, away from the place that once held so many of my dreams.
Kayla betrayed me.
Benjamin betrayed me.
And in this moment, I realize something—no one is ever truly loyal. No one can be trusted.
My heart is shattered, the pieces scattered across the ground. And all I can do is keep moving. Keep breathing. Keep pretending that I’m okay.
Because right now, nothing else matters.
The cool night air stings my skin as I walk aimlessly through the quiet village, my legs moving on their own. The world around me feels distant, as though I’m watching everything unfold through a haze. My heart aches, a dull, heavy pain spreading through my chest.
How could this have happened?
I trusted Kayla. I believed in Benjamin. And now, I have nothing.
