Chapter 1: The Encounter
Lena's boots crunched on the dry underbrush as she patrolled the forest trails. The full moon was rising, casting an eerie glow over the trees. She had been a park ranger for three years, and she loved the solitude of the night shifts. It was a time for reflection, a time to clear her mind and connect with nature.
As she walked, the trees seemed to grow taller, their branches creaking in the wind. Lena felt a shiver run down her spine, but she didn't let it bother her. She was armed with a flashlight and a radio, and she knew these woods like the back of her hand.
Suddenly, she heard a rustling in the bushes. Lena's heart quickened as she turned her light on the sound. That's when she saw him a man, or at least, it seemed to be. He was lying on the ground, his body twisted at an awkward angle.
Lena's instincts kicked in, and she rushed to his side. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked, shining her light on his face.
The man looked up at her, and Lena felt a jolt of electricity run through her body. His eyes gleamed in the dark, and for a moment, she thought she saw something flicker in their depths.
But then, he blinked, and the moment was gone.
"Please," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "You have to get out of here."
Lena's training kicked in, and she quickly assessed the situation. The man was injured, and she needed to get him help. She carefully helped him sit up, and that's when she saw it a glint of claws where his fingernails should have been.
Lena's heart skipped a beat as she realized that this man might not be entirely human.
