Chapter 1: The Last Person I Expected
The bullet didn't hurt the way I thought it would. That was my first thought, lying on the cold marble floor of the Grand Orion Hotel with my blood spreading quietly beneath me. Not pain exactly. More like something being taken away. Warmth. Weight. Control. My second thought was Elena. Because she was standing forty feet away in the ballroom doorway, and she wasn't screaming. She wasn't moving toward me. She wasn't doing anything except standing there with one hand pressed over her mouth, watching me bleed out on the floor like a man watching a building he'd already decided to let burn. I'd known my sister my entire life. I'd never seen that look on her face before. Three hours earlier I was the youngest billionaire in the room, which at a Cole Foundation gala meant I was also the most watched. That never bothered me. I was used to being watched. What bothered me that night was the feeling I couldn't shake from the moment I walked in — that something in the room was already decided, and nobody had told me what it was. Daniel found me near the windows first. "You look like you're counting exits," he said, handing me a drink I hadn't asked for. "Old habit." "Bad one for tonight." He smiled. "Tonight's a celebration." Daniel Hayes had been my closest friend for fifteen years. I knew his smiles well enough to know when they reached his eyes and when they didn't. This one didn't. Elena came to find me twenty minutes later, hugging me too long, saying she'd missed me in a voice that matched her face but not her eyes. Behind her, Angela Hayes watched me from across the room the way people watch something they've already made a decision about. I told myself I was being paranoid. I gave my speech. Raised my glass. Said the right things to the right people. And the whole time, at the back of my mind, something kept pulling at me like a loose thread I couldn't leave alone. My phone buzzed in my pocket during the applause. Unknown number. I stepped away from the stage and answered. "You're already inside it," a voice said. "Inside what?" A pause. "The part where your family decides you don't get to continue." The line went dead. I stood there for a moment with the applause still going around me and my blood running cold, and I made the decision that would cost me everything — I didn't leave. I told myself it was a prank. Someone trying to rattle me before a business announcement. I went to find Daniel instead. He wasn't in the ballroom. The hallway behind the stage was staff only. Marble floors, dimmer lighting, the noise of the gala muffled behind thick walls. I'd used this shortcut a hundred times before. I knew it the way I knew every corner of every building with my name on it. I didn't expect to find Daniel waiting at the far end of it. He had his hands in his pockets. He looked at me coming toward him without surprise, without the performance of a man who'd just been found somewhere he shouldn't be. He looked at me the way you look at something you've been waiting to get over with. "Daniel." "You should've left after the speech," he said. "I told them you'd notice something was wrong. I told them we should've done this differently." My mind moved fast — exits, distances, the man I'd only half noticed near the service door behind me — and it still wasn't fast enough. The sound was flat. Close. Swallowed almost instantly by the walls. I looked down. I looked up. Daniel still had his hands in his pockets. "I'm sorry," he said, and the worst part was that he meant it. I could hear it. Fifteen years of knowing someone teaches you the difference. "You were never supposed to find out. Not like this. Not any of it." I tried to ask him what I was never supposed to find. Nothing came out. The floor came up to meet me slowly, and the last thing I saw before the gold light went out was Elena still in that doorway, still not moving, still watching me with that expression I didn't have a name for. And in the last second before everything went dark, I finally understood what it was. It wasn't guilt. It was goodbye. They tell me my heart stopped twice on the operating table. They tell me it was a miracle I survived. They don't tell me what I woke up to — which wasn't my own body, wasn't my own hands, wasn't my own face in the small mirror on the wall of a hospital staff room at five in the morning. They don't tell me any of that because as far as everyone in this hospital knows, Adrian Cole is still unconscious in a private room two floors above me, machines breathing for him, his family deciding what happens next. Nobody knows he's also standing here. In somebody else's skin. Reading a name badge that says Alex Reed. And listening to his sister's voice drifting down the corridor, calm and quiet, telling a doctor that if anything changes — anything at all — she wants to be the first to know. Before the doctors. Before anyone. I press myself against the wall and close my eyes. She doesn't want me to wake up. That much, at least, hasn't changed.
