Chapter 12 - The Beginning

Chapter 12 – Lavender’s POV I wave to Darius, who hasn’t seen me yet, but does as soon as I wave at him. He is standing just outside the camp. His still soaking wet clothes cling to his body, his hair hangs down on both sides of his face with water still dripping down, but the smile he shows as soon as he sees me is as bright as the sun. He runs up to me with his arms open. When he reaches me, he engulfs me in a big hug. My clothes, which were still relatively dry because I had been inside Selene’s house, immediately become wet on the place where he makes contact with me. But honestly, all I can think about are the small, electric like shock going through my body when he holds me in his arms. Even though Darius’ body is cold as ice, it still manages to make me feel warm. His hug becomes even tighter as he says: “I thought you wouldn’t come back. I was really worried. I’m relieved you’re okay. Please don’t disappear like that again.” I slightly push him away, so I can look him in his eyes. But he doesn’t budge. “Please, let’s stay like this for a few more moments.” Knowing I can’t really do anything, I accept and stop pushing. He put his face in the crook of my neck and I can feel him smiling against my skin. I stand there, awkwardly patting his back as he hugs me. I am just tall enough to be able to look over his shoulder and am able to see Lance exiting the main middle tent and making his way over to us. When he is close enough for us to hear his he says to me: “You don’t want to know how worried he was for you. He kept pacing around, no matter how many times I told him you’d be fine.” I try to supress the happiness that overtakes my body by hearing those words. I don’t even know why it makes me as happy as it is. I don’t even know this guy all that well.   ‘You’ll see why soon enough.’   A voice in my head says. My whole body, which is still in Darius’ arms, stiffens. The voice is faint, but audible enough to know it’s not mine. It’s soft and smooth, with a slight sad undertone.    Who are you? How did you get in my head? Am I imagining things?   No reply. I sigh inwardly. This is all becoming too much to keep to myself. I have to find my memories and try to piece all of this together. And if I want to do that, I have to tell Lance. He might help me. He is a friend of mine right? You are supposed to trust your friends. “Hello? Lavender! Are you alright?” I blink my eyes a couple of times. I must have zoned out. Darius has stopped hugging me and is holding me by my shoulders now with a worried expression on his face. He is scanning my face for answers. But all my face is giving him is a blank expression. “Lance, I have to talk to you in private. I need to tell you a few things.” I say to him while taking Darius’ hands off my shoulders. Darius’ expression changes from worried to something that looks like sadness and then, for a split second, to jealousy. But he quickly hides it away and takes a step away from me. Now that Darius and I are no longer touching, I suddenly feel cold and start to long for his touch again. But I supress those urges and walk back to the main tend with Lance, leaving Darius and his blank expression behind. Lance and I walk to my bedroom in the main tent and sit down on my bed. “So, what is it?” he asks me. I tell him everything my fairy godmother told me. Lance just listens to me and asks questions sometimes as well. But most of them, I cannot answer. “And that is why I need to find my memories.” Lance nods in understanding. “But since I don’t have them, I don’t know where to start or where to go. So I thought I’d talk to you.” “I understand.” Lance says. “But I can’t just leave all these people here. I can help you start up, but I can’t accompany you on your journey. Darius though, he might be willing to go with you. He is stuck here anyway, and he really cares about your safety, so it might even be better for  him if he comes with you, you know, wouldn’t want him to get a heart attack.” He jokingly says the last part. It makes my mouth corners pull up into a small smile. I don’t know why, but the idea of Darius caring for me, makes my heart flutter. Lance wiggles his eyebrows at me. “You like him?” “Honestly, I don’t know what to think about him. He has shown me he cares for me many times already, but he also has shown me signs of distrust and hesitation.” “Well,” Lance answers, “Maybe this trip will help you understand your feelings for him a bit better. Now go tell him the plan we just made. After that, you might wanna go to bed. Tere’s a long journey ahead and you could use a little bit extra rest.” I nod and walk out the tent to look for Darius. I find him still standing where Lance and I left him. He looks at me with a confused expression. “What are you doing out here?” He asks. “I should ask you the same thing. What are YOU still doing out here?” Darius opens him mouth to respond to me, but no words come out after a few seconds of awkward silence, he closes his mouth again. “You know what, I’ll answer you first. I came to look for you. Because Lance and I have come up with a plan.” Now, Darius’ confused expression turns to one of curiosity as he waits for me to continue. “I haven’t really felt like myself ever since I lost my memories, so it’s quite important to me that I get them back. You see, I have a lot of questions and my memories might give me some answers. And Lance and I have decided that you can come with me… If you want to.” I add the last bit a bit unsure. Maybe he doesn’t want to go with me. Maybe Lance was wrong. Maybe he doesn’t care for me at all. Like I said to him: he’s not supposed to be here. But Darius smiles and nods. “Sure I’ll go with you. But why me though, why not Lance himself?” He asks. “Because he is the leader of all these people in the camp. He can’t just leave me alone. And since you’re stuck here anyways, we thought you might want to tag along.” I can see disappointment across Darius’ face for a few seconds, but it quickly disappears and he puts on a smile. “Like I said, I’ll go with you.” I sigh, he’s not very good at faking positivity. “It also means you and I get to spend some quality time together. We could get to know each other. I think that’s necessary, since I’ve lived in your house for a few days. It could be good.” I add. That seems to clear his mood a little bit and now, I can see a true smile replace the fake one. “Alright, we’ll leave tomorrow with sunrise, get some rest, I’ll wake you up.” He nods again. Another awkward silence falls in which we just stare at each other. Darius eventually breaks the silence. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning then.” Now it’s my turn to nod. I then turn around to walk away, but Darius grabs my wrist and pulls me into a tight hug. “Yes, you will.” He says, and as he does so, he let’s go of me and walks off. This leaves me a little bit confused but I shrug it off and walk back to the tent. I get into bed and close my eyes.   ************************* Images start to flash in front of my eyes:   I can see a mountain with a huge icy door. Then the image changes to a jungle with a beach right next to it and in the distance there is a huge ship. I can see a dark alleyway, then a huge tree and then a silver castle. It shines in the sun, beautiful but dark an mysterious at the same time. The last image is one of a big mansion. It’s not as big of fancy as Darius’ but still abnormally large.   Then everything goes black for a few seconds.   Two bright blue eyes appear. They’re the eyes of the guy with the white hair.   “Our connexion is fading, so I have to make this quick. Go west to the answer cave. That’s how you will be able to find me. You have to find me. I can help you.”   The eyes disappear.   *************************   I wake up by the sound of birds. Today I’m finally gonna attempt to retrieve my memories and fix the mess that my life is at the moment. I get out of bed and put on an outfit that looks comfortable. The dream I had last night only made for more questions. But since I don’t really know where else to go or what else to do, I think I might follow the guy’s advice and go west to ‘the answer cave’. The whole camp is quiet. Nobody else is awake yet. I walk up to Darius’ sleep quarters. He is still fast asleep. I take some time to examine his face from close by. He looks peaceful and cosy. He has a small smile on his lips. He must be dreaming of something nice. I reach my hand out to try to touch his cheek, but he starts to stir when my hand is only a few inches away. I quickly retract my hand and watch him as he opens his eyes. He looks at me with a sheepish look on his face. It’s actually quite cute. His hair is a mess and his eyes haven’t adjusted to the light quite yet. “Come on Darius, we gotta go.” I say as motion him to get out of bed. He slowly sits up. That’s when I notice he’s not wearing a shirt. My breath hitches in my throat as I look at his sixpack. He smiles as he notices me staring. I try to tear my eyes away, but they are glued to the perfection in front of them and they are not willing to let go. I can feel my cheeks burning with embarrassment and maybe even a little bit excitement. With a lot of effort though, I get my eyes to look away. He chuckles as he notice my cheeks have changed colour. He gets out of bed and pulls on a t-shirt. On one hand, his concealing his abs like that, makes me sad, but on the other hand, I’m relieved because I don’t think we would have gotten very far today if he didn’t wear a shirt. “I’ll meet you outside.” I say as I walk out, with my eyes and head down. I can still hear him laughing as I get farther away from him. After what feels like ages, he finally emerges from the tent. He didn’t have anything to pack, so it cant have been very long. I do have a small bag with stuff I found in my sleeping quarters that I thought might be handy to have. “You ready?” I ask. “No, but staying here isn’t much better.” We both laugh at his answer. And as we are about to leave, Lance runs up to us. “Wait, I wanted to give you this map. It might help. And I also want to wish the both of you good luck.” “Thanks, we’re gonna need it.” I answer. Lance nods and pulls me into a hug. “Please Lavender, don’t die.” “I won’t, I promise.” He nods again and lets go of me. “”You also have to promise you’ll come visit once you are done.” “Yeah, I will.” Then, Lance turns to Darius. “Take care of her.” Darius doesn’t respond and just turns around and walks off. “Alright, I’ve got to go bye!” I run after Darius. I look over my shoulder and see Lance waving at me I wave back ‘till I can’t see him anymore. Because I was so focused on Lance, I don’t notice that Darius has stopped walking and I promptly bump into him. “So, do you have a plan?” He asks. He sounds a bit mad and I don’t know why. But I try to remain calm. I explain to him the dream I had last night and how I think this might actually help me retrieve my memories. I also tell him that I have been having the same kind of dream for a few days. About the man with the long white hair and the blue eyes. I tell him about the young girl and the werewolf. He listens to me carefully, and when I’m done, he asks: “How do you know we can trust him?” “I don’t know. I don’t, but we really don’t have anything else to go off of. So we might as well have a look at the answer cave. If it’s not what he says it is, maybe we can still get some answers.” He nods and continues walking. I rush after him. “Wait, we’re doing this to get my memories back. You can’t do this without me.” He slows his speed down for me but still keeps up quite a fast pace. I walk next to him in silence. The silence is not uncomfortable like some of the other ones. This one is calming. Both of us are listening to the calming sounds of the forest around us, the chirping birds, the wind blowing through the trees and the crisping leaves under our shoes. This is it, this is the beginning of an unforgettable journey. I already know it.
