Chapter 1
Lina Ambrose wasn't supposed to be here. The music was loud, the lights were dim and the air was filled with different scents of perfume and alcohol. This is not the kind of place she likes to be in. She stood at the entrance of the bar, her fingers tightened around her phone as she read the message again hoping she had seen wrong. Come if you want to see Daniel cheating on you. Her chest tightened. This is the same man she had loved for five years. The only man who saw her, not as the other twin, not as Elena's shadow but as Lina. She swallowed hard stepping inside. The bass of the music thumped in her head as she scanned the room, her blue eyes searching the room for the face she wished she would not see. Couples laughed, glasses clinked and bodies swayed to the sound of dirty music playing. Everything looked normal and she couldn't find the person she wished was not there. Maybe it's a mistake, she thought. Maybe someone is trying to mess with me. Why am I even doubting him, this is unlike you, Lina. She thought and turned back. But then, she saw him, she took in a deep breath so sharply that it hurt. He stood near the VIP section, his back turned to her. The same man she trusted with every fragile piece of herself. She released the breath she was holding. He's here, I'll just ask him… A woman stepped closer to him and Lina froze. At first, she was still optimistic. The woman was laughing, her hand resting comfortably on Daniel's chest intimately. Lina took a slow step forward, her heartbeat pounding loudly. “No,” she whispered under her breath. Daniel said something that made the woman laugh again and this time, he leaned closer and kissed her without hesitation, a kiss that was comfortable. Lina could feel her world crumbling, her knees going weak as she tried to stand well. The music faded, the people disappeared and all she could see was them. Her own Daniel kissing someone else like she didn't exist. Her fingers loosened around her phone and it slipped hitting the floor with a dull sound she barely heard in the room which was blaring with music. Her chest rose and fell, she took a huge breath in and out but no air seemed to enter. “No… no…, this isn't real, it can't be” she muttered shaking her head No… no, this isn’t real… but it was. A quiet sob left her mouth when Daniel pulled the woman closer deepening the kiss like she has done to Lina so many times before. She took a shaky step back, then another. Her vision blurred as tears filled her eyes but she refused to let them fall. Not here, not in front of strangers, not for him. She picked up her phone from the floor then turned, pushing through the crowd, ignoring the annoyed looks and muttered complaints as she rushed towards the exit. “Lina?” The voice stopped her. She froze and turned back slowly. Daniel was standing right in front of her. His expression was a mix of irritation and something that almost looked like guilt. Almost. “Lina, wait” “Dont” Her voice came out softer than she expected. Daniel ran a hand through his hair looking irritated. “It's not what you think” A laugh escaped her lips. “Really?” She asked, her eyes finally meeting him. “Because it looked exactly like what I think.” He exhaled sharply, glancing around as if she was the problem. “Can we not do this here?” “Do what?” She whispered. “Talk about how you've been cheating on me?” His jaw tightened. “You're overreacting” “I'm overreacting?” “Five years Daniel,” Lina said in a trembling voice. “Five years and this is what I get?” “It just happened” he replied quickly Lina stared at him and nodded slowly. “Right,” she said. “It just happened,” she repeated. Like love meant nothing, like she meant nothing to him. Lina stared at him and nodded slowly, her chest tightened, she couldn't stop the tears this time and one tear slipped down her cheek. Daniel noticed and instead of guilt he sighed “I didn't want you to find out like this, you shouldn't have come here” he said. Lina laughed hysterically, she wiped her tears quickly, her expression changing. “So it's my fault?, who is she?, since when I've you been cheating on me” she said in a broken voice. Daniel hesitated, and that hesitation told her everything. “She… she understands me, Lina,” he said finally. Lina let out a small breath. “Ah” she murmured. “So I wasted five years misunderstanding you?” “Don't twist my words–” “I'm not twisting anything” she cut in a sharp voice. “Believe me, Lina, I loved you but it just died. You were just there, I'm a man and I have my needs too” “So it's all about my body?” She chuckles painfully. “I'm just finally seeing you clearly” she paused then nodded once. “Thank you,” she said quietly. Daniel frowned. “For what?” “ For showing me exactly who you are” “Stupid me thinking you were different from them” She turned and walked away, this time not looking back. She didn't care if he calls her name again, because if she did, she might break in a way she wouldn't recover from Outside the cool night air hit her skin, but it did nothing to calm her. Her hands trembled, her chest ached in a way she never felt before. Her vision blurred again as more tears fell uncontrollably. She laughed bitterly, of course, she had been stupid. Naive. Believing she was loved. Who would love me when my parents don't even love me. A passing car's headlights flashed across her face illuminating the tears, she wiped them roughly. “No more tears” she mumbled “He isn't worth it”she hicupped. If love could be thrown away that easily… then maybe it wasn't worth protecting. “ Careful.” A deep voice cut through her thoughts just as she stumbled slightly, a warm hand caught her arm. Lina looked up for a second and everything paused. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in black suit. His face was sharp, unreadable, but his eyes were fixed on her like he saw the whole of her. Not comparing or judging, just seeing or maybe she's just imagining it. Again. “You're about to fall” he said calmly. Lina blinked “Oh… i–” Her voice cracked and she cleared her throat quickly. “I'm fine” He didn't let go immediately, his gaze lingered on her face, on the tear she hadn't fully wiped away “Doesn't look like it,” he pointed. Something about the way he said it, not pity made her chest ache again. Lina let out a small, humourless laugh. “I guess I'm not” Silence descended, between them, the music from inside pulsed faintly in the background. He spoke again “come with me” Not a question. Lina frowned slightly. “What?” “A drink” he said simply. “Or something stronger” She should say no, this is how bad decisions started. This is how regret is made. But then, her mind went back to Daniel and suddenly saying no felt pointless. She had nothing to lose. “What's your name?” She asked. He held her gaze. “Does it matter?” Lina hesitated then shook her head slowly. “No,” she muttered. “It doesn't” She took a step closer. “Okay” she said. His hand slid from her arm to her wrist. She didn't pull away as he led her hand towards the waiting car, she didn't look back. She knew she would regret whatever would happen. Because something in her mind whispered to her, the moment she stepped into that car, there would be no going back.
