The Forgotten City

Chapter 12

Hours later, I trudge arm in arm with Sara and Tiffany down a lonely road. There hasn't been another soul since they left the Forgotten City. The tear streaks have dried on all of their faces. We have cried until we ran out of tears. Now here we are; in the middle of nowhere. At least we have our packs.

"How long has it been?" Sara croaks.

"Don't know," I whisper. "Maybe it's all been a bad dream and I will wake up in my bed and realize I missed a test."

Tiffany chuckles. "That would be just like you, Ali! Sleep in and miss the most important test of the year and your come back would be I had this freaky dream where everyone in this creepy town got swallowed up in this even creepier fog, and I lost the love of my life..."

"What are we going to do?" I sob.

"We are going to find out what happened to our friends. And if possible we are going to get them back!" states Tiffany defiantly.

"I miss Sam," whines Sara. "She was my best friend. She always had my back," she chokes on the last part.

"All I have now is you, Tiff. I don't have any parents. I don't have Ian, or even Jason... not that I would go back to him..." Tears start to leak down my face again. "I miss Ian. I really thought that..." I can't continue.

I let my imagination free; just thinking of what could have been. I would have loved to live on a ranch. I would wake up every morning in Ian's arms. I would have my very own family with him. I really wanted to have a baby with him...

Tiffany leans in and hugs me, bringing me back to the present and the very bleak truth. There would not be a happily ever after for me. "I know! But right now, I think he would want you to move forward," she encourages me.

"How? I can't picture my life without him," I whisper.

Suddenly, a white light fog crosses the road.

My breath hitches and my body tenses. What now?

A lone figure appears in the mist and struts right up to me. Strong arms wrap around my body. Warm lips kiss my neck. "I missed you," a husky voice growls low into my ear.

I pull back.

"Ian."
