CHAPTER ONE
MY WEDDING JANESSA’S POV “You sent for me sir,” I said with my head to the floor. I was filled with fear and anxiety. This was the first time since I arrived the mansion two weeks ago that I was going to stand in Joe Spock's presence. Even though I had been his father's caregiver for two weeks, Joe made sure we never saw eye to eye, and when we did see each other from a distance, his mannerism was clear that he couldn't stand my presence. “Of course, I did. It's the only way you'll be standing in my room.” Joe was very mean with his reply, but that meant nothing to me. I was star struck, looking into his hazel eyes and beholding his tall, broad chested body, with a face adorned with a sharp jawline. “Styr,” Joe turned to his cousin, who was everywhere Joe had to be. Styr was like a tick on a dog's fur with Joe. They were inseparable, and anywhere Joe was, you could be sure to find Sytr a quarter mile away. “Here” Styr said, handing me a big brown envelope. I was looking confused, staring at them both. “Usually, when people are handed envelopes, they open it, Janessa!” Joe said, bringing an end to the short lived, dreadful silence. I blinked twice to call myself back into consciousness and proceeded to open the envelope. I could not believe my eyes. “It is…” “A contract, yes!” Styr said. “You get married to Joe for six months, after which you disappear with the cheque attached to the contract.” He explained. “You wouldn't have to worry about disgusting jobs like being a caregiver to an old man.” Joe said. This moment felt surreal. Never in a million years would I believe that the first actual conversation between us would be a proposal. I couldn't say no to Joe. Not because I was in dire need of money, but because I finally found the opportunity to take a step closer to Joe Spock. There was not a single day that his thoughts did not fill my mind, since I moved in two weeks ago. “I'll do it!” I responded without hesitation. Styr and Joe were both surprised and pleased. ********** “Styr will drive you home,” Joe said, as soon as we walked out of the registry. “Where are you going?” I queried, not concealing my disappointment. I drove with Styr to meet Joe here, the least I was expecting was a car ride together back home, hoping for at least a proper conversation with Joe. “I hope you are not getting any ideas, Janessa,” Joe raised a brow as his forehead folded. “A signed piece of paper does not give you the right to question where I want to be and when.” He drew closer to me as he spoke, with an intimidating aura and filled me with freight. I quietly got into the vehicle and drove back to the mansion with Styr, as instructed. I made sure to finish all my duties to Mr. Spock, Joe's father, and I sent him to bed early. I took a scented bath, put on the most expensive fragrance I had, and flung on a black, mesh nightwear, with black string panties. For the next hour, I waited in Joe's room for his return, and jumped out of bed in excitement, like a puppy, when I heard his car drive in. “What are you doing here?” Joe queried in a harsh tone, as soon as he opened the door and found me in his bed. I felt shame wash over me. This was not quite the reaction I was looking forward to, but I had myself to blame. Joe rolled his eyes. “Do you not have work to do, Janessa?” He queried. “I sincerely apologize sir, I have no idea what I was thinking.” I immediately folded. “Clearly, you weren't thinking,” he responded and walked towards the closet. “I already told you, that some stupid piece of paper…” “Means nothing,” I finished his statement and headed straight for the door. “I'm really very sorry sir.” I said, shutting the door behind me. I passed by Mr. Spock's door and thought to return, just to be sure he was sleeping fine. Mr. Spock was a sweet soul and was nothing like his son, even though Joe was a spitting image of his father. Sometimes, I wondered if I was drawn to Joe because I saw his father in him. I sighed, softly closing the door and entered my room, which was next door. ‘This is what you signed for, Janessa,’ I said to myself, falling in my bed and letting my little head get some rest. “Good morning, Mr. Spock.” I greeted excitedly, as I walked into his room, but got no response. “I can see you enjoyed your night.” I continued. “Mr. Spock?” I called, inquisitively. The silence was very unusual. I walked to him and found his eyes screwed shut and his body turning pale. “Mr. Spock?” I shook him vigorously and hoped that my thoughts were wrong. My panicking soon drew attention to the room and a few maids were shortly gathered. “What is going on here?” Joe entered with sleepy eyes, still in his pajamas. “You know better than to be noisy, before 8am.” He added. “Mr. Spock is dead.” I announced with a heavy heart, which was reflective in my shaky voice. Joe's eyes widened, and he hastened his steps. He checked all his father's vitals and sadly, confirmed his father's death. In a short time, thanks to the calls that Joe made, the ambulance had come to pick up Mr. Spock. I was in tears, as were the other maids. We all loved Mr. Spock and even though he was very ill, we did not expect to lose him this soon. Just as the ambulance drove out, a black Maybach drove in. “Baby bro, I came as soon as I could.” a man alighted the vehicle in a hurry. I recognized that voice and the average height petite structure. Even covered with a face mask and shades, I could not miss the person. ‘This cannot be happening.’ my heart dropped to my stomach.
