CHAPTER THREE

AN ADDITION JANESSA'S POV “Darling, I'll meet you upstairs,” Joe said, helping me softly up the stairs. We had just returned from the funeral and I could not get over how ‘all over me’ Joe was. Our marriage had jumped from zero to a hundred, with Gray's presence, and I was loving every minute of it. I nodded and was about to leave, when he pulled me closer and placed a kiss on my forehead. My cheeks turned red. I hurried upstairs and changed into one of Joe's shirts, since I hadn't brought a lot of luggage and had to act the part of a wife. “Yes?” I responded in excitement to the soft knock on the door, hoping to find Joe on the other side, but was greatly disappointed. “Jael?” I expressed more shock than disappointment. Jael pushed me out of the way and walked right into the bedroom. “Joe would not like that you're here.” I said, “You know, he doesn't let anyone into his bedroom.” I added. She gave me a death stare, running her eyes from the tip of my hair to those of my feet. “And yet you're here,” She responded. Jael was a friend of Joe and Styr. She was the third wheel that could mostly be found around them, when Joe and Styr were not alone. “I see you're getting lost in Joe's little drama,” she said, walking around slowly. “I do hope you remember that this is temporary and on contract.” Her voice was very emphatic, almost as though I was being threatened. “Why do you feel the need to remind me?” I queried, “Because you love him and you're upset he doesn't see you the same way?” I fired at her. The shock on her face was glaring. “You stupid b***h!” She was going to throw a slap across my face, but my reflexes were way more than she could imagine. Her mind could never have conceived my years of service in the gang. “I wouldn't do that if I were you.” I said, my eyes blazing with the anger in my heart. Jael stared at me for a while and then stormed off angrily, slamming the door behind her. I took a deep breath, imagining the story she was going to relate. Even from a hundred miles away, one could smell Jael's love for Joe, but apparently, Joe was the only one who couldn't see it, since they had been childhood friends and he considered her the sister he never had. I was now very furious, so I picked a black pair of pants and a jacket and snuck out of the mansion to the back of the house, where the court was. I spent the next four hours throwing kicks and punches at the dummy that I had created, and tried to clear my head with this activity. My actions were just the longing desire of what I wanted to do to Jael, but unfortunately, I had left that life behind me. This was the monster I couldn't show to Joe. I couldn't dare. I wasn't the maid he thought, the soft, helpless caregiver. I was a murderer, like Gray said. I didn't get weary of punching the air, until I felt nausea and ran to the edge of the garden, which was just beside. This marked the end of my exercise. ‘I should go get some medicine.’ I thought, until it hit me. “No. No. No.” I said, pulling backwards to take a seat on the park bench in the garden. “I couldn't be…” “Pregnant?” I whispered. The realization hit me, as I recalled that I hadn't seen my period in a couple of weeks. The last time I also had anything to do with a man was over two weeks ago, just before I left the gang. “s**t!” I exclaimed loudly. This could only mean that the child's father was… “Janessa, Janessa, Janessa.” Gray slowly entered. “Every day, it is clear you haven't left your life of trouble.” He said. “...Gray,” I called under my breath. “You have Joe's little sister all worked up,” he said, drawing closer to me. “She hasn't stopped complaining.” He added. “And clearly, you want to kill her too.” Gray said, staring at the punching bag. I bit my lips. I hated that Gray knew me so well. I cleared my throat and stood erect. “This is nothing but harmless training.” I responded, trying to be defensive. Gray wore a smirk. “I hope it's also harmless to my baby in your womb.” He blurted. I coughed, choking on my saliva that had taken the wrong route, as his words hit me. “Here” Gray handed me a bottle of water. He could predict me so well. I gulped in the water and raised my head, locking my gaze with his. “You and I know the child belongs to me,” he said. “I know for a fact that Joe hasn't touched you, and if you weren't pregnant, you would be all over the place with your hormones.” Gray stood behind me, speaking directly into my ears, as he was fond of. Gray hadn't stopped tracking my cycle, like he used to, when I had the need to warm his bed, as a member of the gang. Up till this day, I cursed my parents for giving me to that gang, to repay my father's debts. I hadn't lived past the trauma of sleeping with the mafia boss, as a thirteen year old. I could never live past it. “I’m sure everyone would be excited to know there'll be an addition to the family.” Gray said, heading back inside. I grabbed his hand and pulled him backwards. “You can't tell anyone,” I said, with a subtle plea in my voice. “Of course,” his reply was highly sarcastic, “Otherwise I'll have to tell everyone that you killed my father. A man who has shown you nothing but kindness,” Gray said, ‘I did not kill him!’ I wanted to yell, but what difference would that make? There was a thick silence between us both. “You already know what I want, Janessa.” Gray said, “And its obvious destiny has you on my team.” “Do it!” Gray spat in my face and forcefully loosened my grip off him, walking into the house and slamming the exit door behind him.
