A STEP TOWARDS DESTINY
JOE'S POV
“You can't love her!” Jael was not excited a single bit about my news.
“Why not?” I queried, “besides, I'm not saying I love her, I'm saying I think she's an interesting person, and I'll want to know her,” I added.
“There's nothing interesting about a caregiver you are now supposed to fire after your father's demise!”
“Styr, help me!” Jael called.
Styr had been quiet, for most of the argument, contributing nothing.
“Uhm, she's right, Joe.” Styr said, “You’re only married on paper, until your father's lawyers hand you all his property.”
“Jael has a point.*
“This was about taking everything from your brother, Gray. We should not lose sight of what is important,” he said.
I took a deep breath.
I completely understood them both. I had proposed marriage to her, because Styr had notified me that my father's will required me to begin a family of my own.
Either of his sons’ who could either have a child or a wife, was to inherit the family fortune.
I knew for a fact that my brother was not about to get married, especially since he had left home a long time ago and had no idea of my father's will.
He had only returned with the hope of getting a part of the family fortune and all I wanted was to rub it in his face.
“I understand your point, both of you,” I replied, “but surely, one date cannot be bad, right?”
Jael rolled her eyes to the back of her skull.
“I mean, I've seen this woman create art and throw punches on the field, which makes me really believe there's more to her.” I pleaded my case to the family I knew.
They both stared at me quietly for a while.
“I mean, one date couldn't hurt.” Styr finally concurred. As for Jael, she stormed out, really upset.
I gave Styr a handshake and hurried to my room to ask Janessa to join me on a date.
I couldn't tell what exactly it was, but I knew for a fact that there was something pulling me towards her and my curiosity had already gotten the best of me.
“Janessa?” I slowly opened the door and walked in.
I looked around and before I could get worried, she walked out of the bathroom in a towel, and wet hair, dripping down her back.
I was dumbstruck by her flawless skin and undiluted beauty.
“You called?” Her voice called me back into consciousness.
“Uhm, yes.” I said.
“I was wondering if you would want to come with me on a date.” I said, “I mean, dinner.”
“It's a business dinner,” I immediately pulled myself together. “ You know the cameras are on me and everyone wants to see my wife.” I said.
I felt so dumb, as the words left my mouth.
I had failed to express my intentions. I never learnt to be emotionally expressive, but even I could tell I should have done better.
“Right now?” She queried.
“Yes,” I stammered, “right now.”
“I mean, you have two hours to prepare.” I added.
Before I got more time to embarrass myself, I walked out.
‘Stupid!’ I placed my head in my palms and proceeded to make the arrangements.
************
My jaw fell to the floor when she walked out of the entrance door in a black sleeveless dress.
It was a short dress with rope hands, having a flay part, attached to a corset top. Paired with silver heels and her long ginger hair, curled and in a messy bun, she was breathtaking.
I took her by the hand from the entrance stairs and helped her into the car.
I drove to the five star restaurant, that I had fully booked, and I couldn't help notice how much she was looking around, now realizing that there was no business dinner anywhere.
“Uhm, I thought you could use a good time.” I said, offering an explanation. “I realize it has been a really long week for you.” I said.
“A long week for us all.” She responded and I nodded affirmatively.
For the most of the dinner, we were seated opposite each other in silence.
I was regretting my decision already.
‘I should have listened to Jael.’ I thought.
Janessa and I lived in different worlds and now that we were seated across from each other, it became glaring that we had nothing to talk about.
After an awfully quiet meal, we got out of our seats and headed to the car.
“Get out of the vehicle!” We heard a loud order, as two vehicles crossed our path.
I turned to Janessa. I was shivering, but managed to conceal my fear very well. I had never been in such a situation and wasn't sure how to act.
To my surprise, Janessa opened the car door and walked towards the men.
“Is there a problem?” she asked one of the men.
Before he got the chance to respond, she took hold of the gun and kicked him in his balls, burying a bullet straight into the head of the other.
She ran back to the car with the gun she had seized.
“Drive!” She yelled. “It's only a matter of time before there's more of them.”
I was stunned and didn't move for a few seconds.
“Drive!” She yelled again, and I had the car in full speed, turning around to take another route.
When we got to safety and finally pulled over at the house, I immediately picked my phone to call the police and Janessa just hurried in.
My heart was beating twice as fast, and I couldn't wrap my head around what had just happened.
After laying my complaint to the police, I rushed in to meet Janessa.
“Who are you?” I queried, as soon as I flung the door open and found her seated at the distal end of the bed.
