CHAPTER FIVEMalvina took a long time going to sleep. When she awoke, the sun was pouring through the sides of the curtains. She climbed out of bed and had started to dress herself before Nanny came in. “I didn’t think you’d be awake so soon,” mumbled Nanny. “I thought being so very late last night, you’d want your beauty sleep.” “I think we will go back to England this afternoon, Nanny,” Malvina blurted out unexpectedly Nanny gave a cry. “Oh, not this afternoon!” “Why ever not?” “Well, you said as how you were going to send the nurses to the theatre, and I thinks that the couple who looks after the old lady should go too. So I told them about it. And I thought, as you weren’t sure when we’d be leaving, we’d go to the theatre tonight.” Malvina did not speak and Nanny carried on,
