Chapter 26
In Demo's apartment Jesse waited for news about the robbery. She was nervous and she was hungry. And she was angry at her three men. She prepared herself a sandwich. She sat by the phone, ate her food, and drank a glass of milk. The food would tide her over for a few hours. The baby moved inside her and Jesse smiled. Once in a while a cockroach skittered across the kitchen floor.
The phone rang.
Jesse picked it up after the first ring.
"Hello."
"Hello. Jesse?"
"Who’s speaking, please?"
"My name is Bernard Tatti. I'm Demo's lawyer. Demo's been arrested. He was wounded. He’s okay. He's at Bellevue Hospital. He asked me to call you."
