Chapter 1: The Night the Meteor Shower Arrived
“Beep—”
“My name is Ansi, and I am a biological researcher at the Central Underground Research Institute. If you are hearing this recording, it is likely that I have already been murdered.”
“The story begins six months ago.”
“On that day, the research institute received a meteorite that had fallen from outer space, which contained a virus not of this Earth. The investigation of this meteorite was led by my adoptive father and mentor, the renowned biologist Ampela, so naturally, I was included in this investigation team.”
“However, this was just the beginning of a nightmare.”
“Experimental animals were gradually infected, and we were astonished to find that their brains were slowly dissolving, replaced by extreme activity in the brainstem and cerebellum—put simply, they became unconscious, yet their motor and cellular regeneration abilities improved to an unprecedented level.”
“In other words, they transformed into something akin to ‘zombies’ from a sci-fi movie.”
“We tentatively called it the ‘zombie virus,’ which became the focus of our research over the past six months. Under my mentor's guidance, we gradually understood some of its characteristics, and the research progressed significantly. But it was at this time that I sensed something was happening within the institute.”
“I don’t know who is scheming in the shadows, but I clearly felt that this research team, including myself, had become their prey. Their people were everywhere.”
“So I chose to leave this recording.”
“I cannot know your identity as you listen to this recording, but I implore you to save my colleagues. The information I can provide is very limited; the following is merely my speculation, but I am about eighty percent sure—the mastermind behind all this is my assistant: Harper! You must be careful of her! She…”
“Bang!” The keyboard of the computer was nearly smashed to pieces!
The woman at the computer desk revealed a grim expression, her once-praised pure and beautiful face now distorted with rage. Her hands, painted with bright red nail polish, clenched into fists as she lifted the laptop and smashed it violently onto the ground.
“Damn Ansi!”
Harper's high heels crunched on the shattered pieces of the computer, and as if not yet satisfied, she stomped on it repeatedly, shocking her followers behind her and the hostage researchers crouching on the ground.
When the woman got angry, she was truly terrifying.
They exchanged silent glances, instinctively lowering their heads.
After stomping on the remains a dozen times, Harper finally grew tired and sat back down in her chair, her emotions seemingly cooling down. “So, did you catch her?”
The followers pushed each other, finally pushing out a hapless soul.
“W-we didn’t… she got away with the data.”
“Useless!” Harper casually grabbed a pen holder from the desk and hurled it, along with the pens, at the hapless soul's head.
Blood immediately streamed from the hapless soul's forehead. His whole body trembled, yet he could not fight back.
“You can’t even catch a defenseless little girl; what use are you big men? You might as well drag all of you off to feed the zombies!”
The hapless soul's legs gave way, and he fell to his knees.
Harper shouted angrily, “What are you waiting for? Hurry up and chase her! Pass down my orders: I don’t need her alive. Whoever can kill that damn girl Ansi will be rewarded with whatever they want!”
“Hmph!” She glared at the room with disgust, swaying her hips as she walked out.
The followers meekly responded and pushed the hostages out as well.
In the chaos, no one noticed a hand with a crescent-shaped scar picking something up from the ground…
Meanwhile, at the sewer exit of the research institute.
With a “clang,” a crisp sound echoed, as if a small animal had knocked over some metal object. After a few seconds of silence to confirm no one was around, the grate at the sewer exit was pushed up, and a tall figure emerged from the dark tunnel.
The white research uniform was stained with patches of yellow and black, emitting a faint, unpleasant odor. The hair tie had snapped, and long hair clung to her face with sweat, further emphasizing the fugitive's disheveled appearance. The originally delicate and spirited face was now obscured by fear, yet anger still burned in her dark eyes, driving her to push beyond her limits.
Ansi gripped the portable hard drive tightly, silently praying.
Although she was a scientist without faith, she pleaded to all the gods and Buddhas, “Please, please let me escape! I will become an incredibly devout believer!”
“Please, please…”
She curled up in the shadow of the wall, only five meters away from the back door of the research institute. However, the footsteps searching for her echoed back, accompanied by the chilling sound of barking dogs.
Ansi held her breath.
In the silent night, her heartbeat thundered like a drum, nearly bursting her eardrums. The weak beam of the flashlight swept across her surroundings, and she instinctively shrank back. Unfortunately, her physique was not petite; if it were daytime, she would surely be discovered.
The footsteps and barking gradually faded.
Amitabha! Thank God!
Ansi peeked out, seeing the figures of her pursuers gathering not far away. This was probably her only chance.
She gritted her teeth and dashed toward the back door without hesitation.
Input the password! Open the door!
“It’s her!! Quick, chase—kill her!!”
Ansi ran forward in a panic, and outside the research institute was a dense forest, a natural barrier of isolation.
Her limbs ached as if they didn’t belong to her, and her body, pushed to its limits, was heating up. The more she ran, the lighter she felt. The air brushed against her skin, her nose tinged with acidity, and tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Why hadn’t she discovered it sooner!
“Kill her!!”
The pursuers behind her drew their guns, and the sound of bullets hitting the ground terrified Ansi, causing her to tumble into the woods.
The chase continued until Ansi could no longer run, and in a last-ditch effort, she crawled into a hidden tree hollow.
She truly could not run anymore.
Holding her breath, her tears had long since dried in the wind. Moonlight fell on her forehead, and when she looked up, she realized that the tree she was hiding in was hollow. Through the gaps, she could see the moon peeking through layers of dark clouds, along with countless white glowing dots.
White glowing dots?
Ansi rubbed her eyes, confirming that she wasn’t imagining things.
In the pitch-black sky tinged with purple, there were indeed dense clusters of white dots, and they were getting larger… no, they were getting closer, heading straight for the ground.
Meteor shower?
The white dots finally transformed into graceful arcs, adorning the tranquil and peaceful night sky, beautiful like a painting.
“It's so beautiful.”
Her mood suddenly relaxed, and her consciousness began to fade. Ansi clasped her hands around the portable hard drive, “Please bless me…”
As the meteor shower streaked across the sky, carrying her wishes.
On this land, whether day or night, whenever people saw a shooting star, they would almost always make a wish.
However, this time, the meteor shower brought not hope, but despair.
Like the mass extinction of dinosaurs millions of years ago, countless meteors fell to the ground. While humanity was still bowing their heads to make wishes, the blazing fireballs descended at an unimaginable speed.
Upon hitting the ground, they exploded, burning, and evaporating everything.
Space agencies around the world could not comprehend how a meteor shower that should have been merely a spectacle suddenly turned into a catastrophic disaster. Yet it happened, and the scale was far greater than they had anticipated.
Meteor strikes triggered earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis… Seventy percent of the Earth's natural structures were destroyed, with direct casualties reaching forty percent of the total human population.
Even more terrifying was—
In the areas struck by the meteors, the dead began to rise again, standing up in a manner that did not belong to humanity.
Before people could celebrate the resurrection of their loved ones, the gaping maws of death came to claim their lives. The zombies from sci-fi movies became a reality, and how could innocent crowds resist these creatures that had no consciousness, only hunger, and possessed extraordinary regenerative abilities?
The apocalypse, once confined to imagination, had arrived without warning.
The survivors clinging to life around the world called themselves “survivors,” gathering based on food and water, supporting each other. Among them, three organizations, with their substantial power, became humanity's last hope—
The Human Survival Alliance, abbreviated as HSA, claimed to be the last government organization on Earth. Its initiator and leader, Othello Eureka, was referred to as the “President,” uniting the world's strongest forces to establish this survivor nation. It gathered the largest number of survivors and possessed the most resources.
Scientific Elites, abbreviated as SE, was a scientific and technological company established concurrently with the apocalypse. It boasted the world's most advanced research team, mastering cutting-edge anti-zombie technology, rivaling HSA in power, and providing paid protection for survivors. The founder, Harper, was said to have come from the former Central Underground Research Institute and was entrusted by the board to manage the entire company.
The Angel Relief Society, abbreviated as DA, was the only charity organization in the apocalypse. Its aim was to provide minimum living guarantees for survivors struggling on the brink of life and death. All members were vetted religious personnel, and the assistance provided was entirely free of charge, solely to ensure that people could survive together. Sister Teresa Von was invited to manage the relief society; it was both the most popular organization and the most vulnerable, with resources distributed from individual and collective donations.
Resources, weapons, food, and water.
Everything was solely for survival.
Yet even this minimum living goal had now become a luxury. No one knew where the hope of the apocalypse lay, just as they did not understand why this apocalypse had suddenly descended upon them.
Remember, only hope and faith guide everything.
