A Shattered Existence
ADRIEL The courtroom's oppressive silence was broken only by the judge's gravelly voice, "Adriel, I hereby sentence you to prison for three months." Gasps rippled through the audience, but I felt a strange sense of relief wash over me. Finally, a decision had been made—a punishment for my crime. My eyes drifted to where my parents sat, their faces etched with disappointment and anger. They hadn't come to support me; they were here to watch me fall. Their silence was damning. As the gravity of the situation hit me, my thoughts drifted to the events that had led me here. "How could you, Esmé?" I asked, my voice trembling with hurt and betrayal. We stood in our parents' backyard, the bright summer sun casting dappled shadows on the grass around us. "Oh, come on, Adriel! It's not like you don't know how this family works," she retorted, a cruel smirk playing at her lips. "Everyone loves me, and there's nothing you can do about it." "But James?" I questioned, my eyes welling with tears. "Why him, too?" "Why not?" Esmé shot back, her eyes flashing with malice. "He's the perfect catch. Besides, it's not like he ever loved you." Stung by her words, I stumbled back, tears streaming down my face. Esmé advanced, her hand raised to push me, but I dodged her, causing her to slip and fall, her leg twisting at an odd angle. Shock coursed through me, followed by panic as she let out an agonized scream. Back in the courtroom, I watched as my weeping mother stood up, her face contorted with rage. "You malicious, ungrateful child! You're no longer part of this family!" she declared, signaling to my father. They turned their backs on me and walked out of the courtroom, leaving me alone to face the consequences of my actions. The judge, taking pity on my emotional state and the ordeal I had just faced, allowed me to return home for the night to gather my belongings and say my final goodbyes. I was to report to prison first thing the following morning to begin my sentence. Numb with shock, I made my way outside the courthouse, only to find that my bank cards had been blocked. Cold rain poured from the heavens, drenching me to the bone. I trudged home barefoot, my once-white dress now a muddy, sodden mess. As I approached the gate to our family estate, my husband's car sped past, splashing me with a torrent of cold, muddy water. Expecting him to ignore me, as usual, I was surprised when he suddenly stopped and stormed back towards me. His eyes blazed with fury, and I froze with fear as he grabbed me by the neck, his grip tightening painfully. "How could you hurt Esmé like that?" James demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "She's the love of my life, and you tried to take her away from me!" "James, I... I didn't mean..." I choked out, my words dying in my throat as his grip tightened further. My vision blurred, and the world around me faded into darkness. The sound of my heartbeat thundered in my ears, drowning out all other noise. My hands shook, and I struggled to breathe. In that moment, I knew I was dying. When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying on the cold, hard bed in my assigned prison cell. Disoriented, I tried to piece together what had happened. I remembered James's hands around my neck, the fury in his eyes, and the world fading to black. Somehow, he must have brought me to the prison and left me in my cell, perhaps as a final act of spite before I began my sentence. A loud bang jolted me from my reverie, and I realized that I was no longer held by the neck by James, but lying on a hard bed in a sparsely furnished cell. The walls were painted an ugly, depressing gray, and the only light came from a small, barred window high above. As the events of the day slowly came back to me, I curled up into a ball and sobbed, my heart breaking into a thousand pieces. In that moment, I knew I would never be the same again. I was now a prisoner, a social pariah, and utterly alone. The harsh slap of his palm on my cheek was the last straw. I had lost everything. I had been shunned by my family and abandoned by my husband. I was alone, with nothing left to live for. Anger and despair coursed through my veins, and I lunged at the warden, my nails clawing at his face. He shoved me away, and I fell to the floor, my head hitting the concrete with a sickening thud. I lay there, sobbing uncontrollably, as pain radiated through my skull. As I lay on the cold concrete floor, a strange sense of calm washed over me. My breath came in ragged gasps, and the world around me began to fade. "No!" the warden cried out, his voice laced with panic. "You're not going anywhere, Adriel! You have to pay for your crimes!" I ignored him, welcoming the darkness that enveloped me. The pain and sorrow that had been my constant companions were finally gone, and in that moment, "I'm finally free..." I mumbled, as the prison guards dragged my limp body down the hall. Esmé was behind my misery. She had always been the cunning one, the puppet master of our family. It was evident to me now that she had managed to orchestrate this hellish scenario—from manipulating James to casting me out of our family—just to see me suffer. But in this darkness, I found solace, free from her malicious schemes and the burdens of my past. In the end, I realized, freedom wasn't just about being able to do what you want. It was also about being free from the burdens and expectations of others. That was what true freedom really meant. As the darkness consumed me, I embraced my newfound freedom, convinced that I had taken my last breath. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. I became aware of a presence beside me, and a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed through the void. "Not yet, Adriel," the stranger whispered. "You still have a purpose to fulfill." The world around me began to spin, and I found myself gasping for air. Opening my eyes, I caught a glimpse of a man standing over me, his face hidden by shadows. The smell of smoke and burning refuse assaulted my senses, and I realized with horror that I had been moments away from being thrown into an incinerator. "Who... who are you?" I managed to croak, my throat raw and aching. The man said nothing, but helped me to my feet, his grip strong and reassuring. As I struggled to make sense of what was happening, my vision blurred, and the mysterious figure began to fade from view. "Why did you save me?" I asked, my voice shaking with emotion, just before I lost consciousness once again. ************************** Esmé was the most cunning of the siblings, and her plan to ruin Adriel had worked. With her out of the way, Esmé was determined to make sure she could be the golden child of the family. Esmé knew that she was the smartest one among her siblings, and she used this advantage to her fullest potential. She could always manipulate her brothers into doing whatever she wanted, and her parents always took her side, even if she was wrong. As the youngest, she always thought she was the best, and she was determined to prove it to everyone. Her brothers were too dumb to realize they were being manipulated, and her parents were too busy with their own lives to care. Esmé never let anyone get in the way of what she wanted, and she was willing to do anything to get it. She was determined to be the best, and she would stop at nothing to achieve her goal. Esmé was a ruthless and calculating individual. She was always able to find a way to manipulate her opponents and use their weaknesses against them. Her ability to deceive and trick others made her a dangerous enemy, and she used her skills to her advantage, achieving success time and time again. And getting her sister Adriel out of the way was her greatest dream as she doesn't like being a twin nor was she comfortable having almost the same face with another. Despite her cunning ways, Esmé was not infallible. She had a tendency to be overconfident, and this often led to her making mistakes. She also had a tendency to underestimate her opponents, leading her to underestimate the threat posed by her sister Adriel in the future.
