Chapter Three

Chapter Three   Cemetery   THE HOURS have passed normally--well at least right?   I successfully finished our project in Chemistry before the deadline. My group mates almost peed on their pants as I unleashed my inner evil to them. The next time there will be a groupings, I don't want to be with some useless group mates again.   On the afternoon, I just busied myself inside the Student Council office again. Since our class is done, I have all the time to spend the rest of the day inside this room to organize our upcoming outreach program in a nearby home for the aged center. The past few weeks have been unfortunate for the elders of this haven because of a sudden disaster that damaged their facility. It was reported last month that their whole building was almost burned into ashes. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. But for the meantime, the least we can do is to help them specially now that the unexpected fire left a huge damage in their facility. It burned some of their supplies and even some of their rooms. Furthermore, as the current president of the Supreme Student Government, I have a huge responsibility of ensuring that all the preparations and plans for this event are well settled.   That is why earlier, we tried to gather some donations from our fellow students and right now, Nimsan and Jeniry are enthusiastically counting the donations that we accumulated. We have already packed prior to this so they are just basically counting the number of packs that we made. One pack is equivalent to one person, it is more convenient and systematic this way.   I yawned as I feel the tiredness take over my system. I have been here for a couple of hours already so I'm kind of beat. Oh, I wonder what time is it already.   I tried to check the time on the wall clock and it says...   5:30 pm   I went to school at 5 in the morning and I'm still here 5 in the afternoon. Yeah, me and my hectic schedule.   I tried to shrugged the sleepiness off and just blankly stare through a window beside me. It's getting dark already. Maybe because it's already October that is why night time seems to overtake earlier than normal.   "Okay! So far, we have packed one hundred sixty-two." Jeniry happily announced while clapping his hands. Oh. Looks like they are done counting, huh?   Meanwhile, Nimsan quietly stood up from her Indian sit, trying not to have an eye contact with me.   "Good. Then... we can all go home now?" Tangent inquired while putting down the book he was reading: Fundamentals Of Accounting Business and Management 2.   "Tsk. The moment you've been waiting for, huh?" I sarcastically whispered but enough for him to actually hear it.   The bloke glanced at my direction with a foolish blank expression. "Well, let's not show hypocrisy here. I am tired, you are all tired and I want to..." he uttered a very crunchy curse "...rest. What do you think?" He said in an irksome desperate 'cool' way.   I rolled my eyes at that.   "Yeah, yeah. Now shut up and pack your things up. I guess we can all call this a day then," I coldly announce before throwing an irritated look at Tangent who seems to be oblivious about it.   The officers then flock to the locker area to gather their things before leaving.   When Nimsan was about to leave the office, I noticed through my peripheral vision that she glanced on my way. I was almost sure that she is going to say something but then for a split of seconds, it was like she changed her mind. She hastily turned around and leave instead.   It was odd.   "So, ba-bye then..." Tangent informed in a bored tone while dismissively waving his hands with two band aids. I didn't reply, I just rolled my eyes at his silhouette instead.   I am used to being the last one to leave the office specially now that Ms. Quen, our adviser was not here because of a meeting. As the head of this organization, I need to ensure that all the appliances are turned off. I want everything to be organize.   When I switched off the last light, I can't help but to stare at the darkened office for a few seconds before finally locking the door.   While walking down the stairs, bits of memories of what happened earlier flocked my mind like a bunch of ominous black butterflies. My eyes would always wander in every bulbs on my way, thinking if the bizarre scenario will happen again but it seems like everything is normal...for now.   I know that there is something wrong here, that is absolutely certain now. From the crazy lightbulbs then to the unusual things about my two officers. Whatever this game that they are playing, I'll make sure that I'm ready for it.   For sure it is just two things: either they want to play with the things around here or... it is life, that they really want to play with. Whatever it is, I will make sure that they'll face the consequences of their actions.   I tried to push away those thoughts for the meantime as I stride my way to the parking lot. I smirk when I saw my baby black.   I fanatically tapped my motorcycle. While starting the engine of my baby black, I mentally decided to visit the cemetery once more.   I will be very busy for the coming weeks so I wouldn't have enough time to visit them anymore. That is why I will try to go there again before that happens.   It was only a few minutes drive before I reached the place. Today is October 10, so not much of the people are here. Just a few people who are unusually early for November--like me.   While walking inside the cemetery, I passed by a girl who was in an Indian sit in front of a gravestone with two candles lighted on it.   What caught my attention is the unusual color of her hair--red. Her hair is like a fire dancing in the beat of the wind while her eyes are emotionless as she stares to what is in front of her.   She's one the few people who happened to be here too.   While thinking if the girl was familiar or not, a sudden realization hit me. My pace faltered a bit as I tried to glance back at the gravestone.   That was new.   I already memorized the whole cemetery because of my frequent visits so recalled that the gravestone used to be a blank spot. But now, a lifeless corpse is already lying beneath it.   May the soul rest in peace.   One last glance before I decided to resume my walk towards my destination.   I fished the key from my bag when I reached the mausoleum. The rusty sound of the ancient gates reverberated in the quiet cemetery.   When I entered.the place, my eyes immediately went to the two portraits hanging peacefully on the wall.   "Hello mom and dad..." I greeted their smiling static images.   --   -C.N. Haven-
