Chapter 2: PREGNANT FOR THE MAN THAT LEFT ME IN THE ALTAR Leilani’s Pov The first thing I heard was the beeping of sound. It continued repeatedly in a horizontal pattern that I was forced to peel my eyes open. Blinking, I was initially blinded by the brightness of the light. Was I in heaven? Was this what heaven looked like? That means the scriptures were correct. The beeping sound continued causing me to snap my neck to my side, I regretted the action almost immediately as pain shot through my body. As my eyes slowly adjusted to the room, the first thing I spotted was the white roof, the drips connected in my veins, the oxygen mask and a monitor beside me beeping. Where was I? Here definitely didn't look like the heaven I was used to and had heard of. No way heaven would have a monitor. The sound of the door creaking open made me squint my eye as my neck could not move. A man I suspected to be the doctor walked in, “hello there,” he smiled, coming up to where I lay immobile on the small bed. I wanted to speak, but I had an oxygen mask over my face. “I know, you have a lot of questions and no you are not dead. You are very much alive,” the doctor said to me in an amused tone. He took out the oxygen mask and wiped my mouth clean, then used a mini torch and flashed into my eyes. “You are one lucky lady,” he muttered, but I couldn't help but think it was a candid contrast to who I was. I couldn't be considered lucky, not after what Cormac did to me. “Wh..at.. Happened,” I asked amidst coughing. As I coughed, pain radiated through my lungs, making it so hard to breathe, it was like my lungs and throat were on fire. “You had a lot of water in your lungs, you would experience a slight discomfort as you speak for the moment,” the doctor explained. “What happened? Who saved me?” I asked almost in a whisper. I wanted to know who it was that brought me back to this hell called life. “I did,” an aged man said, strolling in. I was taken back, how could he have saved me, regardless I didn't want to look rude so I said, “why?” asking him. He gave the doctor a look of, ‘excuse us,’ and the doctor left. “How did you save me?” I asked. The elderly man appeared to be in his late fifties, he looked fit and resembled an athlete. He looked like one that had always spent his Saturday jogging. A direct contrast to how my Saturday went. “That's for later, maybe if we ever become close. Now dear tell me what happened?” he drew his chair close to mine. The old me wouldn’t have said anything, but this broken piece of me I could barely apprehend needed the tiniest love she could get. So I explained what happened. “I heard you saying, ‘at least my death was quick,’” he said and I would have hissed if not for the pain shooting through my body. “My husband…. No, my husband to be, he..,” my words got stuck in my throat from just thinking about it. This was f*****g real. He urged me by taking my hand. I didn't know if it was as a result of being blinded by light but I could almost see the pain in him. Broken soul would always recognize another broken soul. “He married my best friend. I was on my way to the altar, happy with a veil on my face. When I reached there, I saw him with my childhood best friend standing on the altar, saying the vows to one another,” I broke into a sequel sob, how could he do that to me. He patted me, encouraging me to continue. “I was thrown out and humiliated in front of the public. I just wanted to die and end this misery, fortunately for me, the truck did the job without me trying. I was happy that I won't get to see them, yet….” “Here you are, alive,” the man completed and came to stand. “But I don't want to live this life, I'm tired. I have lost, I have nothing to return to, I have no home, nowhere, that death was a free ticket out of this hell hole,” I sniffed. The man let go of my hand and I fell into a trance. “Life is a funny thing my dear, those we hold in high esteem will always let us down the most, the fact that we met on that bridge wasn't a coincidence, we saved each other. We have been given a second chance so we must make use of this chance wisely,” the man muttered with a new found determination that I couldn't trace where or how it came from. “What do you mean?” My brows furrowed as I frowned in confusion. His focus returned to me. He ignored my question and went on to say. “What do you say about paying your friend and husband for what they did to you. Be karma and have your revenge.” It was as though the determination toppled. His eyes held an unusual flame to them. I laughed, “how do you mean? That is not even possible, did I forget to tell you? I have nothing,” I emphasised, reminding him. “Well you just had everything if you conform to what I'm about to offer,” the man said again like that made some kind of sense. “What's that?” I asked in skepticism. “Will you be my daughter, sign an agreement that I'm your biological father,” the man added. My lips began to stretch into a smile before realization slipped in. I did a quick look at the place I was currently in. A private ward, the hospital looked luxurious. My eyes darted to the man in the picture. He saved me, and from my calculation he possibly brought me here. Who was he? “What do you mean? Give me more details,” I urged him. The thought of how I could end Ava and Cormac searing through my sanity. “You will get more information if you agree, don't worry, there’s nothing sketchy about it. I happened to need your help too,” the elderly man added. “Sir,” the doctor walked in, he stepped aside and a man in black suit walked in. He had on a black leather bag, eyeglasses at the brim of his nose. He was a lawyer. I hadn't finished my thought before he bowed and greeted him. By reflex my eyes reverted to the man, he was definitely of high social ranking. “I'll be right with you, wait outside please,” the man instructed the lawyer. Bowing he walked out. A poor man could never get the luxury of a personal lawyer. Just as the lawyer stepped in, the doctor slipped back into the ward. “Ma'am, you'll have something soon, it's not healthy to stay hungry in your situation,” the doctor said, earning my absolute attention. “I'm okay, what conditions?” I asked. Wow! Did my rejection come an illness? Am I going to die now? Which one of those death grip sickness have I got? Did….. “My apologies, I'm sorry but ma'am you are currently pregnant.” The doctors words snapped me out of my reverie. “What!” I sat up from shock. The pain I felt gone in an instant. “You are pregnant. You are carrying a baby in your womb,” the doctor revealed and I felt tears pricking at the corner of my eye. “That can't be possible,” I muttered. “It is in fact very possible, you are two weeks pregnant,” the doctor repeated and I slumped back into my bed. I was carrying Cormac’s child in me? No, no, please no. “No!” I screamed. Life couldn't have gotten worse, I had dreams, I had….. “No!” The doctor was by my side, muttering words that were only but echo in my head. “Check again doctor, I couldn't possibly be pregnant for Cormac,” I took his hand and nudged him in persuasion, there was no way I could possibly be. “I'm sorry ma'am but you are, we did a scan. The baby survived even after being drowned in water with you,” the doctor said like it was some sort of miracle. “I'll get the result for you,” he said as I kept shaking my head. The doctor walked out and my gaze fell accusingly on the elderly man. Why did he save me, he should have let me die. “You can have your revenge if you agree,” he insisted, gaze penetrating mine. Trying to convey god knows what from his eyes. “What do you say, take my hands, and let's pay them back,” said the man. The door slid open and the doctor returned with the scan result. “Here ma'am,” he handed me the black and white ultrasound pregnancy results. I really was pregnant. I looked past the doctor to the stranger offering a helping hand. My gaze was fixated on him. “I'm in,” I muttered ‘Cormac, Ava, get ready because I'm coming for you!’ I clenched the ultrasound results and grinded my teeth.
