THIRTY-THREE Andy tensed his grip on the steering wheel as he approached the ATV sitting in the middle of the road ahead of him. The Ward ATV. All the doors were open, blood strewn on both the ATV and the ground around it. But there was no sign of Sergeant Saunders or the rest of his old patrol. In the passenger seat beside him, Corporal Kaia Phillips cursed. ‘What the hell happened here?’ Andy scanned their surroundings, hoping to spot Saunders and the others. In the distance, beyond the abandoned ATV, was the old ruin they had stopped at in their initial flight from Brimfield. Maybe Saunders was holed up there with the rest of the patrol, injured. Even as he sped up, heading for the ruins, he was aware that the amount of blood spilled was not a good indicator. He would not lose hope
