16 The following morning felt like Groundhog Day for Nicole. Another argument with Sly about school and more questions about why they couldn’t move to be with Rocky. The only change was she didn’t get any phone calls that threatened them. She figured it was going to be a good day. Since Sly was still fighting her on getting school done, she told him they would go to the grocery store when he was done and he could pick out anything he wanted for dinner. She learned her lesson about leaving things too open the day before. “Anything?” he asked again. Nicole nodded. “Yes. Anything. For dinner.” “Okay,” Sly said simply before he started doing his work. Nicole breathed a sigh and tried not to feel guilty about bribing her son. She felt like a bad parent for not being able to encourage him
