CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
The Price of Indiscretion
Jonathan waited until evening after supper before making his move. Since removing his wife from William Addison’s home, he’d spend his day determining how he’d deal with the regretful circumstances that put her into that man’s hands.
He found her in their bedroom, undressing. Although it was still early, she’d sounded tired, saying as she excused herself from the parlor and his company how much she needed sleep. He allowed her to go with no more than a nod. Then he gave her time enough to settle in her room before following her there.
He stood at the open door for some minutes, watching her silently, before finally making enough sound to startle her. She jumped, then turned around abruptly.
“Scare you?”
“Yes. You did.”
