Chapter 1 : The Billionaire in the Tower
The city of Elaris glowed like molten glass at dusk — skyscrapers dripping gold as the sun sank behind the horizon. To the world below, it was a monument to power and progress. To Aria Vale, it was a fortress of secrets.
She stood at the foot of Kael Tower, notebook clutched to her chest, her press badge catching the dying light. The building loomed above her — black steel, mirrored windows, and silence that seemed to hum with money. Somewhere inside was the man she’d been chasing for six months: Damon Kael, the empire’s youngest billionaire and its most guarded mystery.
Aria wasn’t supposed to be here. The story had been pulled from her desk that morning, “too dangerous,” her editor said. That only made her more determined. Every great journalist knew — when a story was forbidden, it was probably true.
She walked through the glass doors like she belonged there. Her reflection followed — a woman in a worn blazer, messy hair pinned up, eyes that had seen too much for someone her age. The receptionist barely looked up when she flashed her ID and asked for an appointment.
“Mr. Kael doesn’t see visitors,” the woman said, monotone.
Aria smiled. “He’ll make an exception for me.”
And as if fate wanted to test her words, the elevator dinged. Two guards stepped out, their expressions unreadable.
“Miss Vale?” one of them asked.
She froze. “Yes?”
“Mr. Kael will see you now.”
The elevator doors closed behind her with a quiet hiss, and she felt her stomach twist. The city fell away as the numbers climbed — fifty floors, sixty, seventy — until only clouds and steel remained.
When the doors slid open, Damon Kael stood waiting.
He wasn’t what she expected. No sharp grin or slick arrogance. He was tall, distant — the kind of man who looked like he’d built his empire with silence and sleepless nights. His suit was black, his eyes darker. There was something cold about him, but not cruel — more like a man who’d forgotten how to be anything else.
“Miss Vale,” he said, voice low and controlled. “You’ve been asking questions.”
Aria met his gaze, heart pounding. “That’s my job.”
He studied her for a long moment, as if weighing something unseen. Then, with a faint, humorless smile:
“Then perhaps it’s time I gave you some answers.”
The door shut behind them, sealing her inside the world she’d only ever written about — and with the man whose secrets could either make her career… or destroy her.
