Chapter 1: The Night My Life Fell Apart
Sophia Bennett stood in front of the full-length mirror, her hands trembling as she smoothed down the elegant white dress hugging her figure. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. Tomorrow, she would marry Ryan Carter, the man she had loved for three years. A soft smile appeared on her lips as she imagined walking down the aisle. Everything was finally falling into place. Or so she thought. Her phone buzzed on the vanity table. A message flashed across the screen from an unknown number. "I think you deserve to know the truth before tomorrow." Attached was a photograph. Sophia frowned and opened it. The moment the image loaded, her entire world shattered. Ryan. And her sister, Vanessa. Kissing. Sophia's heart stopped. "No..." Her hands shook violently as she stared at the picture. It had to be fake. It had to be edited. But another photo appeared. Then another. Then a video. The color drained from her face. The man she planned to marry tomorrow was in a hotel room with her own sister. Sophia felt as though someone had punched a hole through her chest. Tears blurred her vision. Without thinking, she grabbed her purse and rushed out of her apartment. She needed answers. Now. --- Twenty minutes later, she arrived at the luxury hotel shown in the video. The elevator ride felt endless. Her heartbeat pounded against her ribs. Room 1807. That was the room number. Sophia stood outside the door. For a moment, she hesitated. Maybe there was some explanation. Maybe she was wrong. Then she heard laughter. Vanessa's laughter. The sound cut through her like a knife. Sophia pushed the door open. And froze. Ryan was shirtless. Vanessa sat comfortably on his lap. Neither looked surprised to see her. The betrayal hurt even more than the photographs. Ryan sighed. Almost as if she were an inconvenience. "Sophia." Her voice cracked. "How long?" Neither answered. "How long have you been sleeping together?" Vanessa rolled her eyes. "Does it really matter?" Sophia stared at her sister in disbelief. "You knew I was marrying him tomorrow." Vanessa smirked. "He chose me." The words hit harder than a slap. Sophia turned to Ryan. Desperate. Broken. "Tell me she's lying." Ryan looked away. Silence. That was answer enough. Tears streamed down Sophia's face. Three years. Three years of love. Three years of loyalty. Destroyed in a single night. "I loved you," she whispered. Ryan's expression remained cold. "I'm sorry." Sorry. That was all he had to say. Sophia laughed bitterly. The sound barely sounded human. Then she turned around and walked away before they could see her completely fall apart. --- Hours later, Sophia sat alone at a bar downtown. The wedding was canceled. Her future was gone. The people she trusted most had betrayed her. She stared into her glass. One drink became two. Two became five. The pain refused to disappear. Then a deep voice interrupted her thoughts. "You're drinking like you're trying to forget someone." Sophia looked up. And forgot how to breathe. The man standing beside her was impossibly handsome. Dark hair. Sharp jawline. Piercing gray eyes. Confidence radiated from every inch of him. He looked expensive. Dangerously expensive. Sophia laughed bitterly. "You have no idea." The stranger sat beside her. "Try me." Normally she would have ignored him. Tonight was different. Tonight her heart was already broken. So she told him everything. The cheating. The betrayal. The canceled wedding. The stranger listened quietly. When she finished, he slid a glass toward her. "To new beginnings." Sophia raised an eyebrow. "New beginnings?" A rare smile touched his lips. "The best revenge is living well." For the first time all night, she smiled. Hours passed. Conversation flowed effortlessly. And somehow, for a few precious moments, Sophia forgot her pain. Forgot Ryan. Forgot Vanessa. Forgot everything. All she could see were those mesmerizing gray eyes. When the stranger finally stood and offered his hand, she surprised herself by taking it. "Come with me," he said softly. Reason told her to walk away. Heartbreak told her otherwise. And for once, she listened to her heartbreak. She had no idea that the man holding her hand was Alexander Knight. The youngest billionaire CEO in the country. Or that one reckless night would change her life forever.
