CHAPTER 1 Estefanie Nickolas gripped the steering wheel tighter and squinted through the mist obscuring the rice field in North Luzon Express Way, loomed in either side of the vast road going up to the mountain of Baguio City. Had she miss the turnoff? she wondered. She hoped she's in the right track, because their she can hear thunder was already rumbling in the distance and the sky had taken on an ominous cast. Early morning she depart from her home i Manila to escape the fiasco at work. As a Public Relation Specialist at Citizen for Consumer Protection in Taguig, Estefanie is a graduate of B.A in public relations. She had spent the last 4 months lobbying for strict toy safety inspection regulation. But she'd found last night that the bill she is pushing was stuck in the committee. With Congress adjourning for a three weeks break, there is no chance that it will be pass in this session. Then she received a humiliating call from Peter Ramos the handsome lawyer Estefanie had been dating for 5 months. He is pressuring her to move on with him, but for her moving with him means they are officially in a relationship. She doesn't feel anything special to jump into the next level. She sees him only as a friend not as a boyfriend. Until last night call, he tell her, he wouldn't be seeing her anymore because Hazel Cruz was moving in with him. And she breathed a sigh of relief. CHAPTER 2 She reach her destination, and park her car near the public market to buy some items for her 4 days stay in her Uncle John' cabin. She eat her lunch in a fast food and walk in the park. When she notice it's almost 4pm, she ride her car to start her journey going up to the cabin. While driving she look in the mirror, she inspect her own chestnut curls, heart shaped face and wide light brown eyes. Unaware of their potential inner beauty. Had she been wrong, Estef wondered, to turn down his proposal or proposition? He called had called her old fashioned. "But that's just the way I am," she muttered fiercely to herself as she clutched the steering wheel tighter. I want a special and loving man to share the rest of my life with. To make a home with and raise a family, and not just an affair that lasts a few months or years. I'm not going to move with any man unless were married, period. CHAPTER 3 Estef reflected back over the past few month she had been dating Peter, remembering a time when she had thought that Peter might be the man. Getting the big rush from him have been a heady experience. It had come at a time when she had been ready to love and start a relationship. Estefanie's parents had been killed six years ago in a plane crash, and she had spent most of her life since then in fancy boarding schools, summer camps, and a girl's college where there were few eligible man to date. She had grown independent and self-sufficient in those years, but she still lack of affection. She had been eager to soak up to all the flattering attention Peter trow on her. But after the months, knowing Peter something in her snapped that she suspect that his plans for her didn't not include wedding bells. Yet she couldn't help clinging to the hope that she could make their relationship into what she wanted, and start falling in love with Peter. And there is no doubt about it- despite her suspicions that it might be coming, his rejection had hurt her terribly. CHAPTER 4 Her roommate Meg had tried to be consoling. But Estef didn't want any sympathy. She wanted to be alone to sort out her feelings and think what she really wanted in her life. So she decided to packed her bag and left Manila in early morning and headed to Uncle John's cabin in Baguio City. Suddenly Estef slammed the brakes. She'd been involved in her thoughts that she miss to turn right. After backing up and shifting down, she nosed her red hatch back onto the rotten drive. Large drops of rain starting to pour into her windshield. Estef stopped the car in the clearing beside the cabin. Just as she turned off the ignition, the skies turn dark. Heavy drop of rain began to pour against the sturdy A-frame that Uncle John had built as a gateway when he was still the Party Chairman. Her Uncle John is her father's older brother. And for the hundred time she wondered why he, and not her parents, had he walked away from the company plane wreck. But then he had always the lucky one. For the past six years he'd been her guardian, paying her bills and school, out of duty as her only relative. But when she was young every time she's in vacation and been at his house, he seems too busy, too wrapped in his political career, than dealing to take much interest in her. CHAPTER 5 There had always been expensive presents for her like giant stuff toys, a room full of designer clothes, shoes and bags and jewelries. But for Estef, none of this made up for the fact that he was never been at home for dinner. So she force herself to be independent, but when she'd graduated from college and gotten a job, she'd decided to move out of his Uncle John's house. She was hurt when she saw his seemingly obvious relief that she was moving out. She left all the expensive presents behind at his house and keep only her clothing, car and the key to her uncle's cabin in the mountain which he'd given her, along with permission to use it, as long as he didn't have plans for entertaining his cronies. So in her haste to get away, she forgot to contact his secretary if she can use it before fleeing Manila. I guess I'm going to be really wet before I can enter the cabin, the rain is still pouring non stop. She opened the car door, and sloshed into the puddles to the back of the car and pulled out her overnight case and handbag which she carried to the cabin porch. Then with no choice she made another trip at the back of the car to retrieve the groceries, with everything transferred to the porch, she unlocked the door and stepped quickly into the familiar livingroom of the cabin. CHAPTER 6 Estef starting to put all the groceries inside the pantry. Thank goodness Boy Reyes from the village had already laid a pile of woods for the fireplace. Crossing the room, she searched the mantel for wood matches. Uncle John kept there and quickly lit the paper underneath the bed of firewood. After a moment a warming blaze has sprung up, casting long shadow across the room. She start to strip from her soaking wet jeans and green sweater to dry off. She lifted a plaid wool blanket from the black of the chair and spread it in front of the fire place. Then she began to rummaging in her overnight bag for towel and brush. Clad only in silken bikini and matching beige lace bra that accentuate her slender but shapely curves, she toweled herself dry and then began brushing her chestnut hair. relax and ccomfortable at last, she glanced around the spacious living room of the cabin. The flickering shadow gave the rustic furniture a mellow look. Rain was still pelting the cabin's roof, and Estef wondered if the storm might interrupt the power tonight. A power failure is not uncommon occurrence in this remote mountain hideaway.
