CHAPTER 1:- "THE FIRST BRUSH"
The rain in Manila that night didn't wash anything away--
pabalik-balik lang ang amoy ng basura, usok, at dugo.
Maya de la Rama stepped out of her car, pulled her raincoat tighter, and walked straight past the yellow tape.
Flashers were blinking red and blue against the dark
clouds. Reporters were already shouting, but she didn't look their way. Walang oras
para sa kanila.
"Detective de la Rama"
She stopped. Her partner, Chie Valiente, was standing under a leaking canopy, his face
serious as always. Walang emosyon. Ganoon siys palagi. Pero may halong pag-aalala
sa mga mata niya nang makita siya.
"You"re late," sabi niya, but his voice softened. " And you shouldn't be here. Not
this one."
Maya looked past him. "Bakit? Because she's wearing a silver earring?"
Chie's jaw tightened. He nodded slowly.
"Same design. Silver. Crescent moon shape. Left
ear only. Exactly like... before."
Maya took a deep breath; the air smelled like
wet pavement and iron. She walked closer, ignoring the warming look from Chie.
Nang makita niya ang biktima, nanlamig ang dugo niya.
Female. Early 20s. Dressed in white.
Laid out neatly on the ground, arms crossed
over chest. Eyes open, staring at the sky.
One silver crescent moon earring sparkling on her
left ear. Walang gusot sa damit. Walang
kalaban-laban.
"Cause of death?" tanong ni Maya, voice
steady despite the cold creeping up her
spine.
"Stab wound to the heart." sagot ng forensic
officer nearby. "Clean. Precise. Parang alam kung
niya saan tatama. Walang dugong kumalat masyado...
Parang pinahghandaan."
"Execution style," bulong ni Maya. "Parang
obra."
"That's why I said you shouldn't see this,"
bulong ni Chie beside her. He stepped
closer, voice low so only she could hear.
"This is exactly his signature, Maya. The
white clothes. The single earring. The pose
It's him. Dexter Valdez."
Maya gripped the edgeof the canopy until
her knuckles turned white. She knew that
name. She knew the face. She knew the way
his eyes used to look at her--parang
pag-aari ka niya. Walang hanggan.
"He's supposed to be locked up," Maya said,
barely whisper. "Nakulong siya. Three
years ago. I put him there myself."
"Then someone's copying him," Chie said
firmly. "Or... he got out quietly. We don't
know yet. But whatever's happening--you
need to step back. Personal ito sa'yo.
Maya turned to him, her eyes hard. "And let
him hurt someone else? No. Kung siya man
talaga 'to... kung bumalik siya... ako ang
makakahuli sa kanya. Ako ang dadaan sa
kanya."
Chie looked at her--long and hard. Then he
sighed. He knew her too well. Kapag
nagdesisyon na si Maya, walang
makapipigil.
"Fine," sabi ni Chie. "But I'm your shadow.
Walang iwanan. If anything feels off, you tell
me agad. Naiintindihan mo?"
Maya gave a small, grateful nod. "Yes, sir."
"Don't 'sir' me," Chie said quietly. "We're
partners. And more than that."
Maya's chest tightened. She didn't answer.
Instead, she looked back at the victim. The
silver earring glinted under the crime lights.
Beautiful. Cold. Deadly.
He always said art should be eternal, Maya
remembered. And you... Maya... you will be
my masterpiece.
She shivered, despite the heat of the rainy
night.
"Detective?"
Maya turned. It was Mark Santos, the new
forensic aide. He was holding an evidence
bag, his expression respectful and eager.
Dark hair, quiet eyes, always seemed to be
watching everything.
" I took photos and measurements," Mark
said handing her copies. "Everything
matches the old cases. Down to the angle of
the stab wound. And... the earring is
custom-made. Same materials. Same
craftsmanship. It's identical."
Maya stared at the photos. Thanks, Mark."
Mark gave a slight smile. "Just doing my
job, Detective. By the way... I've seen this
design before. In old files. Connected to you,
right?"
Maya froze. Chie stepped in immediately.
"That's enough, Santos. Focus on the
evidence, not on our files."
Mark bowed his head. "Sorry, Sir Valiente
No disrespect. Just trying to help." He
walked away quickly.
Maya watched him go. "He seems... too
interested."
"Everyone here knows your history." Chie
said grimly. "It's part of the case file. But I'll
keep an eye on him. Something feels off
about that guy."
Maya tucked the photos into her coat. "Let's
go back to the station. I need to see the old
files. All of them."
_______________________________________
Hours later, sa loob ng main office, tahimik
na ang buong station. Only the hum of
air-conditioning and the tapping of
keyboards. Maya sat at her desk, files
spread out before her.
Chie placed a coffee beside her. "Still
awake?"
"Can't sleep," sabi ni Maya. She pointed to
the sketches in the file. "Look at this. Dexter
used to draw me. Hundreds of them. Every
angle. Every expression. He said... he said
he wanted to capture my soul."
Chie looked at the drawings--pencil
sketches of Maya. Beautiful. Exquisite. But
watching them felt suffocating.
"He was obsessed," Chie said. "Not love.
Possession."
"And now," Maya traced the edge of the sketch,
"someone's copying his style. Killing in his
pattern. Putting that earring on them. Why?
Is it a message? Or... Is it really him?"
Chie leaned against the desk. "I checked the
records. Dexter Valdez died in prison two
years ago. Heart attack. Confirmed. Autopsy
report signed. Witnesses."
"Then why this?" Maya gestured to the
photos from tonight. "Parang alam ng
gumawa ng lahat ng detalye. Even the things
we kept out of the news."
Chie was quiet for a moment. "That means...
either he trained someone... or someone
very close to him is recreating his work."
Maya stood up suddenly. "His gallery. His
old studio. Everything was locked up when
he went to prison. Who has access now?"
"We're checking," Chie said. "But Maya... be
careful. Kung may kasabwat siya sa labas...
at alam nila ang bawat galaw mo... delikado
ka."
Maya looked at him straight in the eye.
"Hindi ako matatakot, Chie. Three years ago,
I survived him. I survived the threats, the
stalking, the fear that he was watching me
everywhere. Ngayon... I'm not the same
woman he knew."
Chie reached out and touched her hand gently. "I
know. You're strong. But even strong people
break... lalo na kapag pinaglalaruan ka na ng takot."
Maya didn't pull away. She looked at their
hands--his warm and steady over hers. "You
won't let anything happen to me, right?"
"Never," Chie promised, voice firm. "Over my
dead body."
Maya gave a faint smile. "That's what I am afraid of."
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. Unknown
number.
She answered. "Detective de la Rama
speaking."
A soft, smooth voice came through--low
melodic, terrifyingly familiar.
"Hello, Maya. Did you like my latest piece?
She wore white... just like you used to. And
the earring... perfect, isn't it? waiting for you
to notice."
Maya's blood ran cold. She gripped the
phone tight. "Who is this?"
"Don't you recognize me, my love? I told you.
I would never let anyone have you. Not even
prison could keep me away. You belong to
me. Forever."
Chie saw her face pale. "Maya? What's
wrong?"
The voice on the phone laughed softly. "Tell
me... did you miss me, Maya?"
Maya stood frozen. That voice... that was
impossible.
"Dexter?" she whispered.
"See you soon, my muse. The show is just
beginning.
The line went dead.
Maya dropped the phone, her hands
trembling. Chie grabbed her shoulders
immediately. "Maya! Who was it? What did
they say?"
She looked up at him, eyes wide with fear
and disbelief.
"It was him, Chie," Maya whispered, voice
cracking. "It was Dexter. He's alive. And he's
back."
Chie stared at her, shocked. "But the records
---"
"He's alive," Maya repeated, clutching her
chest as her heart hammered wildly. "And
he's coming for me."
Somewhere in the shadows, a silver earring
glinted under soft light. Hanging on a small
velvet display--one pair. One for the victim.
One... for Maya.
And the game had only just begun...
