Unveiling The Secret:
Rebecca also knew that it would mean betraying Nyra in a way that could never be undone.
As she lay there, staring at the message, Rebecca’s thoughts swirled in a storm of confusion. Could she really be with Anthony? Would their relationship be worth the pain and guilt? And how would Nyra ever forgive her if she could even?
The next morning, Rebecca woke to an empty campus, the early hours of dawn casting long shadows over the quiet paths. She had spent most of the night tossing and turning, replaying Anthony’s words in her head. The weight of his decision sat heavily on her chest. Today, everything could change.
As she made her way to class, her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t Anthony.
It was Nyra.
“Can we meet up today? I really need to talk to you. It’s about Anthony.”
Rebecca’s heart dropped, and a sinking feeling settled in her stomach. Nyra’s message felt like a ticking time bomb, and the weight of her best friend’s trust pressed on her like never before.
“Of course. When?” Rebecca replied, her fingers shaking as she typed. She felt sick, knowing what Nyra was about to walk into, completely unaware of the storm brewing in their lives.
“Lunch at the usual spot? I need your advice.”
Rebecca stared at the message, guilt gnawing at her insides. How could she face Nyra, knowing that the boy Nyra loved had already confessed feelings for her? How could she keep this secret any longer?
Her thoughts were interrupted by another message from Anthony.
“I’m talking to Nyra today. I’ll tell her everything.”
Rebecca’s stomach lurched as she read the words. She knew this was the right thing, but the fallout terrified her. What would Nyra do? What would happen to their friendship?
There was no way to stop the inevitable now.
At lunchtime, Rebecca sat anxiously at the outdoor café where she and Nyra had met so many times before. The sun was bright, but it did little to chase away the cold dread pooling in her stomach. Every time the bell above the café door chimed, Rebecca flinched, half-expecting to see Nyra appear, her expression heartbroken, already knowing everything.
When Nyra finally arrived, she was smiling, her usual carefree self, completely unaware of the storm brewing just beneath the surface. Rebecca’s chest tightened at the sight of her best friend, the guilt almost suffocating. How could she break Nyra’s heart like this?
“Hey, Becca!” Nyra said brightly as she slid into the seat across from Rebecca. “I’ve been dying to talk to you. I don’t know what’s going on with Anthony lately. He’s been so distant.”
Rebecca swallowed hard, trying to keep her composure. “Yeah?” she said, her voice shaky, not trusting herself to say more.
Nyra sighed and leaned back in her chair. “I don’t know what it is, but I can feel him slipping away. It’s like… it’s like he’s already made up his mind about something, and I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
Rebecca’s throat tightened. Nyra was so close to the truth, closer than she even realized.
“I just… I feel like he’s hiding something,” Nyra continued, her voice softening. “And I don’t know if it’s something I’ve done or if it’s something else.”
Rebecca’s heart pounded in her chest, guilt threatening to consume her. She could feel her pulse in her ears, the weight of the secret she carried crushing her from the inside out. She had to tell Nyra the truth, but the words felt lodged in her throat, too heavy to speak.
Before she could gather the courage to confess, Nyra’s phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at it, her face paling as she read the message. Rebecca could see the tension in Nyra’s shoulders as she gripped her phone tighter.
“It’s Anthony,” Nyra said quietly, her voice shaking. “He says we need to talk. That he has something important to tell me.”
Rebecca’s stomach dropped, and she fought the urge to reach out, to stop what was already in motion. But it was too late. Anthony was going to tell her, and there was nothing Rebecca could do to change it.
Nyra’s eyes darted up to meet Rebecca’s, her face filled with confusion and fear. “What do you think it is?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Rebecca opened her mouth, but no words came out. She wanted to tell Nyra everything, wanted to be the one to explain, but the weight of their friendship, the bond they had shared for so long, held her back.
“I… I don’t know,” Rebecca finally managed to say, her voice cracking under the strain of the lie. “Maybe… maybe it’s not as bad as you think.”
Nyra nodded, but the worry in her eyes didn’t fade. “I hope so,” she whispered.
Rebecca watched as Nyra stood, preparing to meet Anthony, her heart pounding with dread. She knew this was it the moment that would shatter everything. She wanted to scream, to stop it all from unfolding, but she was trapped by her own guilt and fear.
Nyra gave Rebecca a weak smile before walking away, leaving Rebecca sitting alone at the café, her chest tight with the weight of what was about to happen.
That evening, Rebecca sat in her room, staring at her phone, waiting for a message that never came. She felt sick, her stomach in knots as she imagined the conversation happening between Nyra and Anthony. Every second that passed felt like a lifetime.
Finally, her phone buzzed.
It was a message from Nyra.
“Can you meet me? Please. I don’t know what to do.”
Rebecca’s heart sank. She had no idea what Anthony had told her, but whatever it was, Nyra was clearly devastated. Rebecca quickly grabbed her coat and rushed out of her dorm, her mind racing with possibilities.
When she reached the spot where Nyra had asked to meet a secluded bench near the edge of campus she found her sitting alone, her face pale and her eyes red from crying.
Nyra looked up as Rebecca approached, her expression filled with hurt and confusion. “He broke up with me,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “He said… he said there’s someone else.”
Rebecca froze, her heart pounding in her chest. She had known this moment was coming, but hearing it out loud, seeing the devastation on Nyra’s face, made everything so much worse.
“Who?” Nyra asked, her voice breaking as tears welled up in her eyes. “Who is she, Becca? I need to know.”
Rebecca’s breath caught in her throat, her mind racing for an answer, but before she could say anything, Nyra’s phone buzzed again. She glanced down at the screen, her expression turning from confusion to anger as she read the message.
“It’s you, isn’t it?” Nyra whispered, her voice trembling. “It’s been you all along.”
Rebecca’s heart stopped. She opened her mouth to deny it, to explain, but no words came out. She stood there, frozen, as Nyra’s tearful gaze bored into her, waiting for the confession she could no longer hold back.
And in that moment, Rebecca knew there was no escaping the truth. Everything was about to unravel.
As Nyra's phone buzzes once more, Rebecca’s chest tightens. She watches in horror as Nyra’s expression hardens with a chilling realization. Nyra looks up
at her best friend, her voice low and venomous: “I’m going to make sure you lose him too.”
