CHAPTER.3

A Secret Confession Rebecca paced her dorm room, her thoughts still reeling from the encounter in the gardens with Anthony. Nyra’s expression, the mix of confusion and betrayal, haunted her. She hadn’t had the courage to face Nyra yet, not after what had almost happened. Anthony’s kiss had been brief, but the impact of it lingered, as if it had etched itself into her soul. She sighed and sank onto her bed, hugging a pillow tightly. Her phone buzzed, and she glanced at it to see a message from Anthony. “We need to talk. Can we meet somewhere private?” Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. She had been avoiding him for days, afraid of what they might say to each other, afraid of how much closer they had already become. But she knew she couldn’t avoid him forever, especially not after the tension between them had reached a boiling point. She hesitated for a moment, then typed a reply. “Okay. Where?” “There’s a park near campus. Meet me there in an hour.” Rebecca stared at the screen for a long moment, her mind racing. She knew this was a terrible idea, but something inside her, something undeniable, was pulling her toward him. With a sigh, she stood up, grabbed her coat, and headed out. The park was quiet, the crisp autumn air laced with the scent of fallen leaves and damp earth. Rebecca spotted Anthony sitting on a bench beneath a large oak tree, his hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets. He looked up as she approached, his expression conflicted, torn between relief and something deeper, something darker. “Hey,” he said softly as she sat down beside him, leaving a careful distance between them. “Hey,” she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper. Her heart raced, her stomach twisted in knots. She didn’t know what to expect, but she knew this conversation would change everything between them if it hadn’t already. They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their unspoken words hanging heavy in the cool air. Finally, Anthony broke the tension. “I’m sorry about the other day,” he said, his voice thick with regret. “I shouldn’t have… I put you in an impossible situation.” Rebecca shook her head, staring at the ground. “It wasn’t just you,” she whispered. “I should have stopped it too. But…” Her voice trailed off as she struggled to find the right words. Anthony exhaled, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “There’s something I haven’t told you,” he said quietly, his gaze fixed on the ground. “About me and Nyra.” Rebecca’s chest tightened. She didn’t want to hear this, didn’t want to know the details that would make everything messier than it already was. But she couldn’t walk away, not now. “What is it?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Anthony hesitated for a long moment, as if weighing whether to say the words out loud. Finally, he turned to face her, his eyes filled with an intensity that made her breath catch. “Nyra and I… we’ve been having problems for a while now,” he admitted, his voice low. “Things between us aren’t working. We’ve been growing apart, and it’s not just because of what’s happening between us,” he gestured between himself and Rebecca. “It’s something else. Something bigger.” Rebecca felt a pang of guilt at the mention of Nyra, but she couldn’t deny the relief that washed over her at Anthony’s confession. Still, she couldn’t let herself get caught up in that feeling. “Does she know?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Does she know how you feel?” Anthony shook his head. “No. I haven’t told her. She thinks everything is fine, or at least she pretends it is. But I can’t keep pretending anymore.” Rebecca bit her lip, unsure of what to say. “Why haven’t you told her?” she asked finally, her heart pounding. “If things aren’t working between you two, why are you still with her?” Anthony ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “It’s complicated,” he said. “There’s something else… something I’ve been dealing with on my own. My family.” Rebecca frowned, confused. “Your family?” Anthony nodded, his jaw clenched. “They’ve been pressuring me. They’ve got this… idea of who I should be with. They want me to marry this girl they’ve known for years. Her name’s Emily. Our families go way back, and they’ve been pushing for us to get together since we were kids.” Rebecca’s heart sank at the mention of another woman, even though she knew she had no right to feel that way. “Do you… do you want to be with her?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. Anthony let out a bitter laugh. “No, not at all. I barely know her. We’ve hung out a few times, but there’s no connection, no chemistry. But my parents don’t care about that. They think it’s the perfect match, and they’ve been putting a ton of pressure on me to break things off with Nyra and get serious with Emily.” Rebecca’s mind whirled with this new information. It was more than she had expected, more than she knew how to handle. She glanced at Anthony, his face clouded with frustration, and she felt a deep, aching sympathy for him. He was trapped between his family’s expectations and his own desires, between the woman he was with and the woman he couldn’t stop thinking about. “I don’t know what to do,” Anthony said, his voice filled with quiet desperation. “I don’t want to hurt Nyra. I care about her, but I can’t be with her when my heart isn’t in it. And then there’s you…” He trailed off, his eyes searching hers for something she wasn’t sure she could give. Rebecca’s pulse quickened. “Anthony, this is… this is so complicated,” she whispered. “You need to figure things out with Nyra before anything else happens. It’s not fair to her.” “I know,” he said, his voice heavy with guilt. “I just don’t know how to do it. Every time I think about breaking up with her, I feel like I’m letting everyone down, my family, her, even myself.” Rebecca shook her head, torn between the urge to comfort him and the overwhelming guilt she felt for even being part of this mess. She knew Anthony’s situation was complicated, but the fact remained he was still with Nyra, and whatever feelings they had for each other couldn’t change that. “I don’t want to be the reason you break up with her,” Rebecca said, her voice thick with emotion. “I can’t do that to her. She’s my best friend.” “I’m not asking you to,” Anthony said quickly. “This isn’t about you, Rebecca. It’s about me, about what I want and what I don’t want.” They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. Rebecca’s mind raced, torn between her loyalty to Nyra and the undeniable pull she felt towards Anthony. She knew what they were doing was wrong, but she couldn’t deny the connection between them, the way her heart ached every time she was near him. “I don’t know what to do either,” Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling. “But I know we can’t keep doing this.” Anthony nodded, his face a mixture of frustration and sadness. “I know. But… I can’t stop thinking about you. I can’t stop wanting to be near you.” Rebecca’s breath hitched at his words, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to fade away. All she could feel was the intensity of his gaze, the way his words wrapped around her like a vice. Without thinking, she leaned forward, closing the small distance between them. Her hand found his, and the warmth of his touch sent a rush of heat through her. Anthony’s eyes darkened, and for a brief, dangerous moment, she considered giving in to the pull, to the desire that had been simmering between them for weeks. But before anything could happen, her phone buzzed in her pocket, breaking the spell. She pulled away quickly, her heart racing, and fumbled for her phone. It was Nyra. “Hey! Are you free to meet up? I need to talk to you about something. Anthony’s been acting weird lately, and I need your advice.” Rebecca’s stomach dropped. She glanced at Anthony, who was watching her closely, his expression unreadable. “I have to go,” she said quickly, standing up and slipping her phone back into her pocket. Anthony stood as well, his eyes searching hers. “Rebecca” “We can’t do this,” she said firmly, though her voice shook. “Not until you figure things out with Nyra.” He nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving hers. “I will. I promise.” Rebecca turned and walked away, her heart heavy with the weight of everything unsaid. But as she disappeared into the distance, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning, that the tension between them would only grow, no matter how hard they tried to deny it. That night, as Rebecca lay in bed, her mind spinning, her phone buzzed again. It was a message from Anthony. “I’m going to end things with Nyra. I can’t keep lying to myself. I just hope it’s not too late for us.” Rebecca stared at the message, her heart pounding, torn between hope and dread. She Knew that once Anthony broke up with Nyra, everything would change. There would be no turning back.
