An Unexpected Bond
Rebecca moved through the crowd, her thoughts swirling around her encounter with Anthony. She had never replied to his message, but it had haunted her ever since, her finger hovering over the delete button more times than she could count. It felt like an invisible thread tethered her to him, pulling tighter each time their paths crossed, which, lately, seemed to happen far more often.
Rebecca shook off the thought as she stepped into the library, seeking the quiet refuge of the study tables to work on her history paper. The library was her sanctuary, a place where distractions faded into the background and the noise of her life dimmed. She needed focus, clarity, and most of all distance from Anthony and her conflicting emotions.
As she settled into a corner table, her phone buzzed. Glancing at the screen, she saw Nyra’s name flash across the screen.
“Hey girl! Can’t meet up tonight Anthony and I are going out for dinner. But coffee tomorrow? Miss you!”
Rebecca’s chest tightened. Nyra’s texts had become a painful reminder of the secret she was harboring feelings she couldn’t express, no matter how much they burned beneath the surface.
Rebecca typed a quick reply. “Sure, sounds good. Have fun tonight!”
She set her phone down and pulled out her notes, determined to focus on anything but the tangled mess her emotions had become. As she lost herself in the history of ancient civilizations, she barely noticed the sound of someone pulling out the chair across from her.
When she looked up, her heart lurched.
It was Anthony.
“Hey,” he said, flashing that easy smile she’d come to dread and crave in equal measure. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Rebecca tried to steady herself, keeping her tone casual. “Yeah, just working on a paper. What about you?”
He shrugged, setting his bag down on the table. “Same. I’ve got a marketing project that’s been kicking my ass. Mind if I sit here?”
She hesitated for a beat too long, her heart racing, but nodded. “Sure, go ahead.”
Anthony settled in, pulling out his laptop. The silence between them was thick, but not uncomfortable at least, not for him. For Rebecca, every second felt like a battle to maintain composure. His presence had a magnetic pull, drawing her attention no matter how hard she tried to focus on her work. Every movement he made the way his fingers danced over the keyboard, the way he absentmindedly brushed a hand through his hair seemed amplified in her awareness.
She stole a glance at him and quickly looked away when she realized he had caught her staring. Her pulse quickened.
“How’s the paper going?” Anthony asked, breaking the silence.
“Uh, slow,” Rebecca replied, forcing a smile. “I can’t seem to focus today.”
He leaned back in his chair, his eyes studying her. “Same here. Maybe we can help each other out? You know, keep each other on track.”
Rebecca swallowed hard, nodding. “Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.”
They worked in silence for a while, the tension between them simmering just beneath the surface. Every so often, their eyes would meet, and Rebecca would feel that electric jolt shoot through her, the one she tried so desperately to ignore. But it was becoming harder and harder to pretend that what she felt for Anthony wasn’t real.
After an hour, Anthony stretched and leaned back in his chair, letting out a long sigh. “I’m starving,” he said, glancing at his watch. “Want to grab something to eat? I could use a break.”
Rebecca froze. She knew she should say no, make an excuse, distance herself from him. But the words refused to come.
“Sure,” she heard herself say, her voice barely above a whisper.
Anthony’s smile widened, and before she knew it, they were walking side by side toward the campus café, the same place they had first met with Nyra. Guilt gnawed at Rebecca’s insides, but she couldn’t seem to stop herself. It was as if something beyond her control was pulling her toward him, and she was powerless to resist.
They sat across from each other in the small café, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filling the air. Rebecca stirred her drink absentmindedly, her mind racing as she tried to come up with something to say that wasn’t about the growing tension between them.
“So,” Anthony began, breaking the silence. “I’ve been meaning to ask… about the message I sent you. You never replied.”
Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. She had hoped he wouldn’t bring it up, that they could pretend it never happened. But now, here they were, the topic hanging between them like a loaded gun.
“I” She faltered, unsure of how to respond. “I didn’t know what to say.”
Anthony leaned in slightly, his gaze intent. “Look, I know it was weird, but I feel like we… connect. Don’t you?”
Rebecca’s breath hitched, and for a moment, she couldn’t look him in the eye. The truth was, she had felt that connection from the moment they met, but admitting it felt like a betrayal to Nyra, a line she couldn’t cross.
“Anthony,” she began, her voice shaky, “you’re with Nyra. She’s my best friend.”
“I know,” he said quickly, his expression softening. “And I care about her, I do. But this…” He gestured between them. “This feels different. I can’t ignore it, and I don’t think you can either.”
Rebecca felt the weight of his words settle over her, heavy and suffocating. He was right, she couldn’t ignore it. But that didn’t make it right.
“I can’t do this,” she whispered, shaking her head. “I can’t hurt Nyra like that.”
Anthony reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers. The contact sent a shock of heat through her, and for a brief moment, she allowed herself to feel the magnetic pull, the undeniable chemistry.
“I’m not asking you to hurt her,” Anthony said, his voice low and sincere. “I just… I want to spend more time with you. No pressure, no secrets. Just us.”
Rebecca’s heart raced, her mind a blur of conflicting emotions. She wanted to say yes, to give in to the pull she felt towards him. But she couldn’t shake the guilt, the image of Nyra’s face if she ever found out.
“I don’t know if I can do that,” she said, her voice barely audible.
Anthony didn’t push further. He simply nodded, his expression a mixture of disappointment and understanding. “I get it. Just… think about it, okay?”
Rebecca nodded, unable to trust her voice as she tried to process everything.
They finished their meal in silence, the tension between them thicker than ever. As they left the café, Rebecca felt the weight of her decision pressing down on her, but she knew she couldn’t give in to the temptation.
But fate, it seemed, had other plans.
Over the next few days, Rebecca and Anthony kept running into each other on campus at the library, in the dining hall, even during random moments between classes. Each time, the pull between them grew stronger, the tension more unbearable. It was as if the universe was conspiring to throw them together, no matter how much Rebecca tried to avoid him.
One afternoon, as she was leaving her literature class, she spotted Anthony walking toward her, his eyes lighting up when he saw her. Before she could turn and head in the opposite direction, he was standing in front of her.
“Rebecca,” he said, his voice soft. “Can we just talk? One last time?”
She hesitated, torn between the part of her that wanted to flee and the part that longed to stay.
“Please,” he added, his eyes pleading. “I just need to know if this is all in my head, or if you feel it too.”
Rebecca’s heart pounded in her chest as she nodded reluctantly. They walked to a quiet spot near the campus gardens, the autumn leaves crunching under their feet.
“I can’t stop thinking about you,” Anthony said, his voice raw with emotion. “Every time I see you, it gets harder to pretend I don’t feel this.”
Rebecca’s breath caught in her throat, her heart aching with the weight of his words. She wanted to deny it, to push him away, but the truth was, she felt the same.
“Anthony, this is.”
Before she could finish her sentence, Anthony closed the distance between them, his hand gently cupping her face as he leaned in. His lips brushed hers, a soft, tentative kiss that sent a rush of heat through her body.
For a brief moment, Rebecca allowed herself to feel the thrill, the passion, the connection she had tried so hard to deny. But as quickly as it began, reality crashed back in.
She pulled away, her eyes wide with shock and guilt. “I can’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I can’t do this.”
Anthony’s face fell, but he nodded, stepping back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have”
Before he could finish, a voice broke through the tension. A voice that made Rebecca’s blood run cold.
“Rebecca? Anthony? What’s going on?”
Rebecca turned slowly, her heart plummeting to her stomach as she saw Nyra
Standing there, her face a mixture of confusion and hurt.
And at that moment, Rebecca’s world came crashing down.
