"Stop the emotional blackmail," Victor warned coldly through the comms. Trapped in a besieged safe house and hemorrhaging from premature labor, Cora realized her husband had abandoned her. Trusting Isabella's lies, Victor sent his helicopters to evacuate his vault's core data instead of a medical team. As mobsters breached the building, Cora dug a hidden microchip from her locket, activating the Scarpia syndicate's highest distress code. Heavy-armed rescue obliterated the siege, but this desperate choice carried an irreversible price. The delay proved fatal, and Cora watched in agony as her premature twins, Leo and Dante, died, permanently freezing her heart. Five years later, a bankrupt Victor kneels in Geneva to beg the ruthless Queen of Ashes for an alliance. He expects a powerful stranger, completely unaware the syndicate monarch is the wife he left to die.

Chapter 1 Microchip and the Lone Citadel
The first contraction ripped through me like a sniper’s bullet, at the exact moment the outer walls of our Corsican safe house were breached. Hemorrhaging, alone, and trapped in a sterile white room designed to withstand a siege, I realized the true cage wasn’t the titanium door—it was my husband’s heart. “Victor,” I gasped into the comms panel, my knuckles white against the cool steel. “They’re inside the perimeter. The twins… they’re coming. Now.” His voice, usually a low, possessive growl that promised safety, crackled back, tinny and distant. “The alarms are blaring, Cora. I see that. Hold on.” “I can’t hold on! My water just broke. You need to send the medevac, forget the data!” A woman’s voice murmured on his end, smooth as poisoned silk. Isabella, his consigliere, his shadow. “She’s just panicking, Victor. The pressure is getting to her. She’s using the baby to pull you from the board.” The lie slithered through the speaker and coiled in the pit of my stomach. Victor’s tone hardened, all feigned patience gone. He had made his choice. “There is one helicopter left, Cora. It’s extracting the vault’s core data. I cannot risk the entire Moretti empire for a false alarm. Our legacy depends on it.” “This isn’t a false alarm!” A second contraction seized me, stealing my breath and buckling my knees. I slid down the wall, leaving a streak of sweat and terror. “This is our legacy! Your sons are being born on a cold floor while you save your servers!” His reply was the shot that truly killed me. “Stop the emotional blackmail,” he warned, his voice glacial. “You knew the rules when you married me. The family comes first. Always. Isabella will monitor your situation. Hold the line.” The line went dead. Silence. The only sounds were the distant shouts of our men, the percussive thud of gunfire, and the ragged, animal gasps tearing from my own throat. He had abandoned me. He had chosen his cold, hard data over the lives of his unborn children. Over me. The betrayal was a physical thing, colder and sharper than any contraction. He hadn’t just locked me in a room; he’d sealed my tomb and told me to die quietly. Panic, hot and suffocating, threatened to drown me. I forced it down. I was a Moretti wife, yes, but I was born a Scarpia. We did not die quietly. My eyes scanned the room. A medical station, yes, but stocked only for stabilizing gunshot wounds, not for a high-risk, premature twin birth. The instruments were useless, the sterile field a mockery of my bloody reality. Another wave of agony crashed over me. My spine arched in a silent scream. The babies were fighting their way out, oblivious to the war zone around them, to the father who had already condemned them. *I have to save them. I have to.* The comms crackled again. Not Victor. A gruff, familiar voice. “Luna, this is Alpha-7. The East wing has fallen. We are falling back to the citadel. Is the Alpha en route?” Hope, fragile and foolish, flared in my chest. “Alpha-7, listen to me. I’m in premature labor. The Alpha has cut my comms. You need to override his order. Call the medevac. My access code is Scarpia-Zero-One.” There was a stunned silence. The code was my family’s, an emergency designation Victor never knew I held. “Luna… I can’t. The Alpha’s orders are absolute. All outbound signals are jammed, except his. The helicopter is for the asset only.” His voice was laced with regret, but also with the unshakeable discipline of a soldier. “He said… he said you were secure.” “I’m bleeding out, you fool!” I roared, the last of my composure shredding. “Secure? He’s left me here to die!” The sound of his comms unit being snatched away was audible, then Isabella’s voice, dripping with saccharine concern, filled the air. “Cora, dear. Victor is managing a catastrophic security breach. You must understand, he can’t be distracted by your… theatrics. Real lives are at stake.” Rage, pure and clean as distilled poison, burned through the pain. “You tell my husband,” I snarled, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper, “that when his empire turns to ash, he can build a throne from the bones of the sons he sacrificed tonight.” I slammed my fist on the panel, cutting the connection. I was done begging. Done pleading with the man who was supposed to be my protector, my mate, my king. The screech of metal on the floor below told me time had run out. The invaders were in the citadel. With a surge of adrenaline, my trembling fingers went to the heavy silver locket around my neck. It was a wedding gift from Victor, a symbol of his ownership. But inside, nestled in a hidden compartment, was a gift from my father. Not a pretty jewel, but a flat, titanium disc no bigger than my thumbnail. It wasn't a tracker. It was a beacon. A declaration of war. I twisted the locket open, my blood-slick fingers fumbling with the catch. The disc fell into my palm. There was a microscopic indentation in the center. Pressing it meant activating the Scarpia syndicate's highest distress code—a signal that would bring my family’s private army down on this island like the wrath of God. It was a choice I had sworn to my father I would never make, a bridge I could never un-burn. Using it meant revealing everything I had hidden from Victor, admitting our entire life had been built on a lie I told for love. Another contraction, sharper and more violent than the rest, ripped a scream from my throat. It was the scream of a mother watching her children die before they could even draw their first breath. There was no choice. There never had been. I pressed the beacon. And as the citadel door behind me began to groan under the force of a plasma torch, I collapsed onto the floor, cradling my stomach and praying to a goddess I no longer believed in. Praying that rescue would arrive before I had to bury my sons alone.
