Prologue: Aftermath
The air here smelt damp. I looked around the open space and saw a handful of people filling the street while their clothes are drenched in water.
They must've felt very scared after the flooding. I hug myself in that realization that I, too, am scared.
I have no one left. My mother pushed me into the submarine that is reserved for the women and children. The King, my father, didn't make it to the doors of the submarine. He made it to a point to be left alone in our home, the Palace, and stay with his subjects in their impending doom. My brothers whom I love deeply died as I saw them drown while trying to swim towards the submarine I was riding.
All in all, I am the only Royal left of my Kingdom.
I look again, trying to gain my composure in these trying times. My eyes wander to the glass-like structure that entraps us. The dome feels so hollow in this setup: no lights, no homes, just streets.
The submarine pilot earlier said that we will reach HiveBerg shortly. HiveBerg was a research failure that was done by scientists years ago, in hopes to try and combat human extinction. I can say that they did not fail by making these domes. They succeeded in trapping the only humans left in here.
Maybe I'm wrong. There might be survivors up there. Besides, there are aircraft that could get humans to safety. However, I truly believe no one survived the storms that came with the flooding. Even the most high-tech aircraft cannot survive the strong winds that killed almost 3/4 of the planet.
I shudder at my own thoughts.
After a while of keeping to myself. I was called by a hand on my shoulder. I look up to see a man with a drenched mustache. He wore a tattered suit and tie but his pants are intact. His eyes are gleaming with hope as he recognized me. He is probably one of my subjects.
"Are you Princess Adeline of the Sarkis Kingdom?" He asked, helping me up. I stood tall but he was still taller. I realized that I no longer have my heels to give me extra height.
I nod at him. "How may I help you?"
He smiled at me. He didn't hesitate into giving me a blanket. "Here. You need this. The heating systems of HiveBerg are still not functional. The engineers are still working on them. For the meantime, you must rest and keep warm."
"Who are you?" I asked while walking aside him. We reach a sort of village at the end of the open streets. I guess there are built-in homes here. Probably for the scientists who had to cooped up here for years.
"I'm Senator Alexander Alfonzo. You can call me Alfonzo. I once saw you at the United Nation delegation last year. I recognize you earlier that's why I approached you." He says as if to clue in me as to why I was taken in. "Don't worry. I've been here once. I know how the whole thing works and I can say that it will not kill us."
As if he took all my worries away, I heaved a sigh. "Thank heavens. The dome seemed so claustrophobic. I was struggling to breathe out there." I let out a stifled laugh.
We reach a house in between an empty one. The house seemed full of life with light and all. Alfonzo ducked his head in my direction and gave me a smile. "Don't worry, Princess, you are welcome to my home."
I gave him a slight nod and entered through the door. Before I could even react, I was sacked and hit by something hard, rendering me unconscious.
