New beginnings
The winding road led Jillian deeper into the heart of Diorros, the emerald green canopy overhead casting playful shadows on her path. As she followed the directions given to her, the quaint town gradually came into view, revealing rustic houses and a charming main street adorned with colorful banners. As Jillian parked her rental car in front of a charming café, she couldn’t help but notice the whimsical display of oversized flower pots lining the sidewalk, bursting with vibrant blooms. A stray gust of wind carried the aroma of freshly baked pastries from the café, enticing her senses. She took a deep breath, inhaling the tantalizing scent of sweet treats mixed with the earthy fragrance of the surrounding forest. With a mischievous smile, she checked her phone to confirm the details of her appointment with the realtor, Mr. Beau. Their online correspondence had been filled with witty banter and humorous exchanges, and Jillian looked forward to meeting the man behind the digital persona. She walked into a building opposite the café where Beau was supposed to ply his trade. The bell above the door tinkled softly as Jillian entered, greeted by a warm smile from an older gentleman seated behind a mahogany desk. His eyes twinkled with familiarity as he observed her. “Well, well, if it isn’t the wild photographer herself,” Walter greeted, a playful lilt to his voice. “Jillian Montgomery, right on time. I’ve been expecting you.” Jillian couldn’t help but grin, feeling a sense of camaraderie with the jovial realtor. “Beau, it’s great to finally meet you in person.” Beau chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “Ah, the wonders of the digital world. But let’s not waste any time. I’ve already handpicked the perfect cottage for you, my dear wild spirit.” He retrieved a worn but charming brochure from a drawer and handed it to her. “This little gem is nestled on the edge of town so It’s your own haven of seclusion, with Mother Nature as your closest neighbor.” Jillian’s smiled to herself as she scanned the brochure. It was a cozy, timber-framed abode, surrounded by tall evergreens and bathed in the gentle glow of sunlight, worth the exorbitant fee she was being charged. “Beau, you’ve truly outdone yourself. This cottage is a dream. It’s like you’ve read my mind.” Beau gave her a wry smile. “Well, well, Jillian, it seems our online banter has given me a keen sense of your preferences. It’s as if finding houses that people love is my job.” “I love it,” she declared, handing the brochure back to Walter. “How soon can I move in?” Beau smiled. “Well, Miss Montgomery, it seems you’re in luck. The cottage just became available today. Perfect timing, wouldn’t you say? I’ll have the paperwork ready in no time.” As Jillian and Beau finalized the rental arrangements, Beau leaned in conspiratorially, his voice low. “Now, as a seasoned local, I have a few insider tips for a nature photographer like yourself. There are some hidden gems that will make your pictures truly extraordinary.” Intrigued, Jillian leaned forward. “Please, do tell.” “First, there’s the Whispering Falls,” Beau revealed, his voice filled with reverence. “A picturesque waterfall hidden deep within the forest. The mist creates an ethereal ambiance, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a family of deer grazing nearby.” “That sounds incredible.” Beau continued, his excitement contagious. “And then there’s the Enchanted Meadow. It blooms with wildflowers of every color, attracting a myriad of butterflies. It’s like stepping into a fairytale.” Jillian couldn’t contain her enthusiasm. “I must visit both places. Thank you so much for sharing these secrets with me.” He smiled warmly. ”Consider it a gift from one lover of nature to another. Now, if you have any questions or need any further assistance during your stay, don’t hesitate to reach out. Dios may be small, but we take care of our own.” Jillian took one final look at the cottage brochure, committing every detail to memory, before handing it back to Walter. She pulled out her wallet and began counting out bills to cover the rental fee. Beau held up his hands. “Please, Miss Montgomery, let’s call this an investment. Your first week’s rent is paid in full, courtesy of Diorros Realty.” She was startled. “Oh no, I couldn’t—” “I insist,” Walter interjected, “as part of our community service. You’ll be helping a small business stay afloat, and it’s the least I could do for you.” Jillian hesitated. “I really don’t feel comfortable about this.” “Oh please,” Beau teased. “You can pay me back whenever you wish. We’re neighbors now, you and I.” Jillian relented with a laugh. “Thank you, Mr. Beau. That’s so generous.” She held out her hand to shake on the deal. “I’m looking forward to getting to know you.” Beau winked. “Well, you have no choice. My son is your landlord.” Jillian’s mouth dropped open in surprise, and she couldn’t help but smile as her hand was engulfed in Beau’s firm grip. After receiving the keys to her cottage, Jillian wandered around town, absorbing the unique character of the quaint little town. She found an adorable used bookstore and purchased a few treasures for her new home, including a coffee-table book on local flora and fauna. She was thrilled to see a bookstore in such a remote town, and she immediately planned to visit the bookshop on a regular basis. With her purchases in hand, Jillian set off to find her new home. The directions she had received from Walter were easy to follow, and soon she found herself in a quiet residential neighborhood, surrounded by neatly-kept lawns and cheerful flowerbeds. The street was lined with row after row of colorful houses, many of which were owned by local businessmen and women, the realty firm being no exception. She stopped at the third house on the right. It was an adorable cottage, similar to the one in the brochure, but far bigger than what she needed. It was also located on the outskirts of town, the nearest neighbor being at least a hundred yards away which was perfect really, nosey neighbors.
