Prologue
I’m a doctor serving in a war-torn country, my country. Camden is a small country bordering China. Our national language is Mandarin and we are ethnic Chinese. Unfortunately we are like an outcast to the entire world. Although Camden is ruled by a Monarch, the governing body comprises of the Military Order, or MO as we call it. The MO sets the rules in the country and governs Camden with an iron fist. Hence, it is responsible for all the strife and war happening throughout Camden. What once was a beautiful country was destroyed by many years of war. What am I doing here you may wonder? I come from a poor family, the only child. My father died when I was young serving and defending our beloved country. My mother devoted her life raising me up to be an independent and strong person. I was fortunate enough to get a scholarship to study medicine overseas. Perhaps I’m intelligent but I’d like to think I’m not. I was reluctant to leave my mother when I left for my studies. However, being a stubborn woman, my mother refused to come with me to the UK. How she manage to persuade me to leave was beyond my imagination. I guess I inherited this stubborn trait from her. Anyway, I have her to thank for all my achievements so far. As a student, I struggled a lot. I always prefer to be alone, staying at home by myself and I’d rather study than go out and have fun with other people. I don’t really have any friends and most people stay away from me. I consider myself an introvert but will speak my mind when I feel I’m right. I’m fluent in Mandarin and English which comes as an advantage in many situations. I went through the lowest point in my life after my mother passed away. She didn’t even tell me that she was sick. I took a leave of absence from my studies to look after my mother. Unfortunately she succumbed to her illness and passed away after a year. It was then that I became determined to work even harder and graduated at the top of my class. Eventually, it would take me another five years before I returned home. Many people questioned why I would volunteer and choose to serve in my war-torn home country. I could have accepted the many job opportunities that was offered me. I could easily build a successful career in a better place with my qualifications and experience. But I chose to return home. I guess the reason was I felt indebted to my parents especially my mother. Or it could be patriotism or my sympathy for the people suffering in Camden. Whatever it is, I was young and brave and I wanted to make a change in the country I call home.
