Chapter 5 After a quick shower, I throw on one of my multi-colored, loose-fitting, cotton skirts and a short tank top, and carelessly weave my hair into a side braid. I obsess over the book and amulet the entire time, hungry for answers about where it came from and what it means. Before heading downstairs, I grab the amulet from the box and slip it around my neck to show Grams. A familiar, pleasant warmth fills my body when it lays against my skin. The sadness that’s been taking root fizzles away, and for reasons I can’t explain, I feel hopeful. The aroma of cooking wafts up the stairs and I’m not entirely loving it.
