Jun Hua Mei stared at the narrow path ahead. The dense forest enveloped them in darkness, only illuminated by the moonlight breaking through the leaves. The cold night air felt suffocating, but she wasn’t afraid. Her courage had grown after the previous events.
Zhang Rui walked beside her, though his steps were slightly unsteady. The wounds on his arm and shoulder appeared severe, but he still tried to maintain his balance. Hua Mei glanced at him with concern.
“We need to stop and treat your wounds,” Hua Mei finally said.
Zhang Rui shook his head. “Our time is limited. The hunters are probably still looking for us. If we stop for too long, they’ll find us.”
“If you faint from exhaustion, we won’t reach our destination,” Hua Mei replied firmly.
Zhang Rui smiled weakly. “Alright, we’ll rest for a moment. But only for a few minutes.”
They stopped in a small area sheltered by large trees. Hua Mei opened her small bag, taking out a clean cloth and some herbal remedies she had brought. Carefully, she cleaned Zhang Rui’s wounds and then bandaged them.
“You’re so stubborn,” she muttered while tightening the bandage.
“And you’re so caring,” Zhang Rui replied with a teasing tone.
Hua Mei just shook her head but couldn’t suppress a small smile on her face.
After resting, they continued their journey. The path grew steeper, and the trees became denser. The air felt colder, carrying the scent of damp earth and dry leaves.
“The temple is on top of the hill,” said Zhang Rui. “We need to pass through a cave before we get there.”
“Is the cave dangerous?” Hua Mei asked.
“It’s not dangerous, but it’s dark and narrow. You need to stay alert.”
They reached the mouth of the cave shortly after. The cave looked like a giant gaping mouth, with stalactites hanging down like sharp teeth. Hua Mei lit a small torch she had brought and stepped inside with Zhang Rui.
Inside, their footsteps echoed off the cave walls. The torchlight illuminated the winding, narrow path, casting strange shadows around them.
“Are you sure this is the right way?” Hua Mei asked, feeling a bit uncertain.
“I’ve been through this before,” Zhang Rui replied. “Trust me.”
As they walked further, a rumbling sound echoed from afar. Hua Mei stopped for a moment, listening carefully.
“What’s that sound?”
“A waterfall,” Zhang Rui answered. “We’re almost at the end of the cave.”
When they emerged from the cave, a beautiful sight greeted them. A large waterfall cascaded down, reflecting the pale moonlight. In the distance, Hua Mei could see the peak of the hill where the temple stood.
“Look, over there,” Zhang Rui said, pointing. “That’s our destination.”
However, their happiness was short-lived. A rustling sound came from the bushes. Hua Mei immediately grabbed her knife, while Zhang Rui prepared his wooden staff.
“We’re not alone,” Zhang Rui whispered.
From the darkness, four men dressed in black appeared. Their faces were covered, like the hunters they had encountered before, but this time they carried more dangerous weapons—bows and long swords.
“Hand over the necklace,” one of them commanded in a loud voice.
Hua Mei took a step forward, glaring at them. “This necklace is mine. If you want it, take it yourself!”
“Don’t make us angry,” the man threatened.
“Too much talking,” Hua Mei replied coldly.
The battle began.
Zhang Rui tried to hold off two of the men with his staff, while Hua Mei faced the others. One of the men shot an arrow at her, but she dodged it with agility. She ran forward, slashing the man’s leg with her knife, causing him to fall.
However, the number of enemies soon overwhelmed them. When one of the men managed to knock Zhang Rui down, Hua Mei felt a surge of desperation.
“Zhang Rui!” she screamed.
At that moment, the necklace around her neck began to shine again. A strong red light burst forth, forcing the attackers to retreat. One of the men even dropped his weapon in surprise.
Hua Mei didn’t waste the opportunity. She pulled Zhang Rui up, and they ran towards the top of the hill without looking back.
After running as far as they could, they finally arrived at the front of an old temple hidden behind the trees. The temple looked majestic despite its age, with ancient carvings adorning its walls.
“This is it,” Zhang Rui said, panting heavily.
Hua Mei stepped forward and touched the large stone door of the temple. The necklace around her neck began to glow again, but this time, more gently. The light spread across the door’s surface, forming intricate patterns.
“Wait,” Zhang Rui said. “The necklace is the key. You need to align the patterns with the carvings on the door.”
Carefully, Hua Mei followed Zhang Rui’s instructions. She rotated the necklace, making the light form patterns that matched the carvings on the door.
When the patterns were complete, the temple door opened with a deep rumble. Cold air poured out from within, carrying an ancient scent that made her hair stand on end.
“Go inside,” Zhang Rui said. “In there, you will find the answers to everything.”
Hua Mei stepped inside, a mixture of fear and curiosity stirring within her. Inside the temple, she saw a large room with statues of ancient gods at each corner. In the center of the room stood a magnificent altar, from which a soft light emanated.
“What is this?” she whispered.
“This is the core of all the secrets,” Zhang Rui replied. “That altar holds the history and power of your family. But be careful. There’s a trial you must face before you can uncover everything.”
Hua Mei stared at the altar with determination. She knew that this journey was far from over, and that the next trial might be the hardest. But she was ready to face whatever came her way in search of the truth.
